Experimental application of a recently developed opto-tactile sensor in object surface texture pattern recognition using soft computational techniques has been successfully demonstrated in this article. Design and working principles of a number of optical type sensors have been illustrated and explained. Using the opto-tactile sensor multiple surface texture patterns of a number of objects like a carpet, stone, rough sheet metal, paper carton and a table surface have been captured and saved in MATLAB environment. the captured data have been adopted to soft computational techniques like support vector machine (SVM) technique, decision tree (DT) C4.5 algorithm, and naive Bayes (NB) algorithm for their learning. Testing with unknown surfaces using these techniques shows promising results at this stage and demonstrates its potential industrial use with further development. Results suggest that the methodology and procedures presented here are well suited for applications in intelligent robotic grasping.

the overall performance of a computing system increasingly depends on the efficient use of the cache memories. Traditional approaches for cache tuning deploy performance tools to help the user optimize the source program towards a better runtime data locality. Following this conventional way, we developed a set of such toolkits including data profiling, pattern analysis, and performance visualization tools. this paper demonstrates how the toolset can be used step-by-step to understand the cache access behavior of the applications and then achieve optimized program code. the Discrete Wavelet Transform, a common used algorithm for image and video compression, is applied as an example. Our initial experimental results with this sample application show an up to 3.19 speedup in execution time compared to the original implementation.

Pathologists and cancer biologists rely on tissue and cellular analysis to study cancer expression, genetic profiles, and cellular morphology to understand the underlying basis for a disease and to grade the level of disease progression. Conventional analysis of tissue histology and sample cytology includes the steps of examination of the stained tissue or cell smear under a microscope, scoring the expression relative to the most highly expressing (densely stained) area on a predefined scale for normal, cancer, stromal regions based on the morphology of the tissue, estimating the percentage area of cancer tissue relative of normal and stroma, and multiplying the score by the percentage area of cancer region and converting to another predefined scale for statistical analyses. Most of this analysis is done manually or with limited tools to aid the scoring process. Over the last 5 years, automated and semi- automated microscope slide scanners have become available in the marketplace. these scanners rely on sophisticated microscopes and allow for the digitization of the entire sample at varying magnifications. this has led to the emergence of digital pathology and a growing amount of image data. Each sample digitized is typically of the order of 2.7 GB to 10 GB in size depending on the magnification of the digitizing system with an image size of 30,000 ? 30,000 pixels or larger. Further, current software and methods for automated scoring of tissue is very limited. this has led to an increased interest in identifying novel solutions to automated histology and cytology analysis. In order to achieve high computational accuracy with reasonable turnaround times, novel approaches from the data and resource management perspective are also required to address handling of image sizes outlined above. Carrier Ethernet integrates distributed layer-2 bridge networks to a backbone network. Since carrier Ethernets use simple layer-2 routing, its performance is lower than that of layer-3 routing methods. We introduce an analytic model that evaluates the routing methods in backbone networks. the model solves the multi- input and multi-output maximum flow problem in backbone networks using linear programming. Our method can be used as follows. Firstly, the model suggests appropriate link capacity if network topology and traffic pattern is given. Secondly, the model shows and compares the performance of layer-2 routing methods including perfect routing and our proposed routing called ENDIST(Edge Node Divided Spanning Tree). In this study, the performance is the maximum throughput that a given routing method can reach. We additionally found many good results about ENDIST. Our analytic model proved that ENDIST outperforms the existing layer-2 standard protocols such as STP, MSTP for any offered load and performs perfectly under medium and light traffic load in the given network, thus enough to say that ENDIST is as good as layer 3 routing from the point of throughput.

this paper presents a new methodology for assessing both reliability and well-being indices for composite generation and transmission systems. Firstly, a transmission network reduction is applied to find an equivalent for assessing composite reliability for practical large power systems. After that, in order to classify the operating states, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) based on Group Method Data Handling (GMDH) techniques are used to capture the patterns of the operating states, during the beginning of the non-sequential Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). the idea is to provide the simulation process with an intelligent memory, based only on polynomial parameters, to speed up the evaluation of the operating states. For the conventional reliability assessment, the ANNs are used to classify the operating states into success and failure. However, for the well-being analysis, only success states are classified into healthy and marginal by the ANNs. the proposed methodology is applied to the IEEE Reliability Test System 1996 and to a configuration of the Brazilian South- Southeastern System.

this study describes methods for the retrieval of handwritten lines of text in a historical administrative collection. the goal is to develop generic methods for bootstrapping the retrieval system from a tabula rasa starting condition, i.e., the virtual absence of labeled samples. By exploiting the currently available computing power and the fact that computation takes place off line, it should be possible to provide a good starting point for statistical learning methods. 117 this manner, a closed collection can be incrementally indexed. A cross-correlation method on line-strip images is presented and results are compared to feature-based methods.

As pen-based computing becomes more prevalent, it is increasingly important to be able to share ink across applications and across platforms. the emerging standard Ink Markup Language (InkML) is intended for this purpose. Four drafts of the proposed standard have been produced since 2003, resulting in a specification with broad input from industry and invited experts. the last working draft has simplified and generalized the specification in some important ways and the specification is now in "last call" status. this paper presents an overview of the main features of InkML. with an emphasis on the rationale for what has changed for the last call version.

the goal of this work is the automatic inference of frequent patterns of the cortical sulci, namely patterns that can be observed only for a subset of the population. the sulci are detected and identified using brainVISA open software. then, each sulcus is represented by a set of shape descriptors called the 3D moment invariants. Unsupervised agglomerative clustering is performed to define the patterns. A ratio between compactness and contrast among clusters is used to select the best patterns. A pattern is considered significant when this ratio is statistically better than the ratios obtained for clouds of points following a Gaussian distribution. the patterns inferred for the left cingulate sulcus are consistent with the patterns described in the atlas of Ono.

the problem of Writer Verification is to make a decision of whether or not two handwritten documents are written by the same person. Providing a strength of evidence for any such decision is an integral part of the writer verification problem. the strength of evidence should incorporate (i) the amount of information compared in each of the two documents (line/half page/full page etc.), (ii) the nature of content present in the document (same/different content), (iii) Features used for comparison and (iv) the error rate of the model used for making the decision. this paper describes the statistical model used for writer verification and also introduces a mathematical formulation to include the above four mentioned parameters, for calculating strength of evidence of same/different writer the statistical model uses Gamma and Gaussian densities to parametrically model the distance space distribution arising from comparing ensemble of pairs of documents. the strength of evidence is mapped to a 9-point qualitative scale for the decision;one that is often used by questioned document examiners. Experiments and results show that with increase in information content from just a single word to a full page of document, the verification accuracy of the model increases.

this paper presents a biometric user identification method based on user's gait. We divide obtainable features from user's gait into two categories: walking pattern and stepping pattern (dynamic footprints), and this paper considers an approach of identifying user with dynamic footprints. In this study, we gather gait samples from 10 users while walking over the UbiFloorII. A software module is developed to extract dynamic footprints from the samples acquired, and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and neural network technique are employed to identify the user with extracted features. the experimental results show 90% recognition accuracy. this approach shows the feasibility of our deployed features or dynamic footprint acquired from the UbiFloorII as biometric identifiers.
