the integration of different models, such as scenarios, is an important component of the requirements engineer's work. If manually performed, the integration operation is error-prone and time consuming. thus, an integrated computer-aided environment would be desirable. In the paper, we propose a framework based on mathematical category theory machinery of algebraic operations with higher-order graphs that provides a formalization and a generic pattern for scenario integration. In order to evaluate the proposed framework, we have instantiated the framework and are currently developing an experimental tool.

In this paper, based on least square estimation, a recursive algorithm for indirect learning structure predistorter is introduced. Simulation results show that of all polynomial predistorter nonlinear terms, higher order (higher than 7th-order) nonlinear terms are so minor that they can be omitted in practical predistorter design. So it is unnecessary to construct predistorter with higher order polynomials, and the algorithm will always be stable. Further results show that even when l5th-order polynomial model is used, the algorithm is convergent after 10 iterations, and it can improve out-band spectrum of 20 MHz bandwidth signal by 64 dB, with a 1.2x10(11) matrix condition number.

Shading distortions are often perceived in geometrically distorted document images due to the change of surface normal with respect to the illumination direction. Such distortions are undesirable because they hamper OCR performance tremendously even when the geometric distortions are corrected. In this paper, we propose an effective method that removes shading distortions in images of documents with various geometric shapes based on the notion of intrinsic images. We first try to derive the shading image using an inpainting technique with an automatic mask generation routine and then apply a surface fitting procedure with radial basis functions to remove pepper noises in the inpainted image and return a smooth shading image. Once the shading image is extracted, the reflectance image can be obtained automatically. Experiments on a wide range of distorted document images demonstrate a robust performance. Moreover, we also show its potential applications to the restoration of historical handwritten documents.

the crash rate in road intersection demonstrates the need for a fast and accurate collision detection system. Ubiquitous computing research provides a significant opportunity to develop novel ways of improving road intersection safety. the existing intersection collision warning or avoidance systems are mostly built to suit a particular intersection. We suggest that an intersection collision detection system should be able to adapt to different types of intersections by acquiring the collision patterns of the intersection through data mining. Collision patterns that are specific to that intersection are stored in a knowledge base to select vehicles which are exposed to a high risk of collision. this algorithm increases the speed of collision detection calculation, as detection is not applied on all possible pairs in an intersection. the performance and accuracy of the algorithm are evaluated. this evaluation is done on a developed simulation bed and the results are presented.

this paper presents a discriminative model of multivariate pattern classification, based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and anatomical template. As a measure of brain function, Regional homogeneity (ReHo) is calculated voxel by voxel, and then a widely used anatomical template is applied on ReHo map to parcelate it into 116 brain regions. the mean and standard deviation of ReHo values in each region are extracted as features. Pseudo-Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (PFLDA) is performed for training samples to generate discriminative model. Classification experiments have been carried out in 48 schizophrenia patients and 35 normal controls. Under a full leave-one-out (LOO) cross-validation, correct prediction rate of 80% is achieved. Anatomical parcellation process is proved useful to improve classification rate by a control experiment. the discriminative model shows its ability to reveal abnormal brain functional activities and identify people with schizophrenia.

Tracking detectors in high-energy physics experiments produces hundreds of megabytes of data at a rate of several kHz. Processing this data at a bandwidth of 10-20 GB/sec requires massive computing. the prime task is to reduce the data rate to a manageable amount by real time data compression and pattern recognition techniques. Clustered SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processor) nodes, based on off-the-shelf PCs, connected by a high bandwidth network and running a standard operating system (LINUX), provide the necessary computing power. Such a system can easily be interfaced to the front-end electronics of the detectors via the internal PCI-bus. the High Level Trigger of e.g. the ALICE experiment at the LHC/CERN combines and processes the full information from all major detectors in a large computer cluster. Data rate reduction is achieved by reducing the event rate by selecting interesting events (software trigger) and by advanced data compression. Track reconstruction chains for analysing events containing more than 10000 tracks have been benchmarked. © 2007, international Society for Industrial Process Tomography. All rights reserved.

Dual-energy mammography can suppress the contrast between adipose and glandular tissues and improve the detectability of microcalcifications (MCs). In clinical dual-energy mammography, imaging object is human breast, while in calibration measurements, only phantoms of breast-tissue-equivalent material can be used. the composition and density differences between calibration materials and human breast bring the differences of linear attenuation coefficient which lead to the calculation errors in dual-energy imaging. In this paper, the magnitude of MC thickness error from calibration materials has been analyzed using a first-order propagation of error analysis. this analysis shows that the thickness error from calibration materials ranges from dozens to thousands of microns which can not be ignored when carrying out dual-energy calculations. the evaluation of several popular phantoms shows that it is of great importance to adopt the phantom materials approaching human breast most.

Normal design is, essentially, when an engineer knows that the design they are working on will work. Routine 'traditional' engineering works through normal design. Software engineering has more often been assessed as being closer to radical design, i.e., repeated innovation. One of the aims of the Problem Oriented Software Engineering framework (POSE) is to provide a foundation for software engineering to be considered art application of normal design. To achieve this software engineering must mesh with traditional, normal forms of engineering, such as aeronautical engineering. the POSE approach for normalising software development, from early requirements through to code (and beyond), is to provide a structure within which the results of different development activities can be recorded, combined and reconciled. the approach elaborates, transforms and analyses the project requirements, reasons about the effect of (partially detailed) candidate architectures, and audits design rationale through iterative development, to produce a justified (where warranted) fit-for-purpose solution. In this paper we show how POSE, supports the development task of a safety-critical system. A normal 'pattern of development' for software safety under POSE is proposed and validated through its application to an industrial case study.

In this paper we propose a weakly supervised learning algorithm for appearance models based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle. From a set of training images or volumes depicting examples of an anatomical structure, correspondences for a set of landmarks are established by group-wise registration. the approach does not require any annotation. In contrast to existing methods no assumptions about the topology of the data are made, and the topology can change throughout the data set. Instead of a continuous representation of the volumes or images, only sparse finite sets of interest points are used to represent the examples during optimization. this enables the algorithm to efficiently use distinctive points, and to handle texture variations robustly. In contrast to standard elasticity based deformation constraints the MDL criterion accounts for systematic deformations typical for training sets stemming from medical image data. Experimental results are reported for five different 2D and 3D data sets.

the contemporary operating environment (COE) imposes significant challenges for military personnel and systems. the asymmetric nature of the threat and the proliferation of sophisticated weapon systems to rogue nations and trans-national terrorist organizations only further the need to ensure friendly forces maintain a high-level of warfighter readiness. As this threat evolves the importance of higher-level fusion processing and the associated development of automated fusion-based decision support systems is seen as a key enabler and facilitator for addressing the challenging requirements of the modern battlespace. Recent years has seen a focused emphasis placed on level 2 (situation assessment) and level 3 (impact assessment) data fusion processing. A key component of level 3 processing is the prediction and analysis of likely enemy courses of action (eCOAs). this prediction and evaluation of enemy actions, or impact or threat assessment, is a key element of the Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace (IPB) process.
