In this paper, we address a problem of atmospheric blocking pattern recognition in global climate model simulation data. Understanding blocking events is a crucial problem to society and natural infrastructure, as they often lead to weather extremes, such as heat waves, heavy precipitation, and the unusually poor air condition. Moreover, it is very challenging to detect these events as there is no physics-based model of blocking dynamic development that could account for their spatiotemporal characteristics. Here, we propose a new two-stage hierarchical pattern recognition method for detection and localisation of atmospheric blocking events in different regions over the globe. For both the detection stage and localisation stage, we train five different architectures of a convolutional neural network (CNN) based classifier and regressor. the results show the general pattern of the atmospheric blocking detection performance increasing significantly for the deep CNN architectures. In contrast, we see the estimation error of event location decreasing significantly in the localisation problem for the shallow CNN architectures. We demonstrate that CNN architectures tend to achieve the highest accuracy for blocking event detection and the lowest estimation error of event localisation in regions of the Northern Hemisphere than in regions of the Southern Hemisphere.

We studied central mechanisms for regulation of incoming structural afferentation of varying contrast of mentally diseased by means of multichannel registration of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and brain topographic mapping with subsequent correlation with behavioral data. the first type of VEPs responses by direct relationship between contrast and VEPs amplitude was characterized. In second case, initially there was VEPs amplitude increase, but later on the relationship became the reverse one, manifested by marked decrease of the amplitude. Comparison of behavioral investigation results with electro-physiological data enabled to find that the first variant of reaction was characterized by lower degree of visual images identification, under condition hampering their identification, irrespective of test objects modality.

Polyps represent an early sign of the development of Colorectal Cancer. the standard procedure for their detection consists of colonoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract. However, the wide range of polyp shapes and visual appearances, as well as the reduced quality of this image modality, turn their automatic identification and segmentation with computational tools into a challenging computer vision task. In this work, we present a new strategy for the delineation of gastrointestinal polyps from endoscopic images based on a direct extension of common encoder-decoder networks for semantic segmentation. In our approach, two pretrained encoder-decoder networks are sequentially stacked: the second network takes as input the concatenation of the original frame and the initial prediction generated by the first network, which acts as an attention mechanism enabling the second network to focus on interesting areas within the image, thereby improving the quality of its predictions. Quantitative evaluation carried out on several polyp segmentation databases shows that double encoder-decoder networks clearly outperform their single encoder-decoder counterparts in all cases. In addition, our best double encoder-decoder combination attains excellent segmentation accuracy and reaches state-of-the-art performance results in all the considered datasets, with a remarkable boost of accuracy on images extracted from datasets not used for training. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the main topic of this work is on the detection of counterfeit documents and especially banknotes. We propose an end-to-end learning model using a deep learning approach based on Adapnet++ which manages feature extraction at multiple scale levels using several residual units. Unlike previous models based on regions of interest (ROI) and high-resolution documents, our network is feed with simple input images (i.e., a single patch) and we do not need high resolution images. Besides, discriminative regions can be visualized at different scales. Our network learns by itself which regions of interest predict the better results. Experimental results show that we are competitive compared with the state-of-the-art and our deep neural network has good ability to generalize and can be applied to other kind of documents like identity or administrative one.

Explaining the behaviors of deep neural networks, usually considered as black boxes, is critical especially when they are now being adopted over diverse aspects of human life. Taking the advantages of interpretable machine learning (interpretable ML), this paper proposes a novel tool called Catastrophic Forgetting Dissector (or CFD) to explain catastrophic forgetting in continual learning settings. We also introduce a new method called Critical Freezing based on the observations of our tool. Experiments on ResNet-50 articulate how catastrophic forgetting happens, particularly showing which components of this famous network are forgetting. Our new continual learning algorithm defeats various recent techniques by a significant margin, proving the capability of the investigation. Critical freezing not only attacks catastrophic forgetting but also exposes explainability. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the classical approach in machine learning, based on the principle of minimizing the arithmetic mean of parameterized functions, is vulnerable if training is carried out on the basis of data containing outliers. the article considers the approach to the construction of robust methods and machine learning algorithms, which are based on the principle of minimizing estimates of average values that are insensitive to outliers. Proposed machine learning algorithms are based on the principle of iterative reweighting. the research field concerned with the digital restoration of degraded written heritage lacks a quantitative metric for evaluating its results, which prevents the comparison of relevant methods on large datasets. thus, we introduce a novel dataset of Subjective Assessments of Legibility in Ancient Manuscript Images (SALAMI) to serve as a ground truth for the development of quantitative evaluation metrics in the field of digital text restoration. this dataset consists of 250 images of 50 manuscript regions with corresponding spatial maps of mean legibility and uncertainty, which are based on a study conducted with 20 experts of philology and paleography. As this study is the first of its kind, the validity and reliability of its design and the results obtained are motivated statistically: we report a high intra- and inter-rater agreement and show that the bulk of variation in the scores is introduced by the image regions observed and not by controlled or uncontrolled properties of participants and test environments, thus concluding that the legibility scores measured are valid attributes of the underlying images. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Traditional routing algorithms select the path based on the cost, hop, or other network-related metrics. However, with cloud computing and edge computing development, it is essential to develop a computing-aware routing mechanism to distribute the task to the computing nodes with better capabilities. In order to achieve the combined scheduling of computing resources and network resources, computing-aware Network (CAN) is proposed. the solution aims to comprehensively consider the computing resources and network resources existing when routing and forwarding user requests, which is essential to improve the current situation of uneven utilization of edge computing resources. As many theories and structures are proposed, the requirements for experimental verification of CAN are gradually increasing. However, there is still a lack of experimental simulation prototypes available for study. In this work, motivated by the gap, we propose a simulation prototype based on the idea of the CAN, where routing nodes can incorporate both the computing status and network status into routing and forward packets to an edge server according to the computing demand service type. We verified the effectiveness of the CAN prototype from simulation experiments on a cross-domain topology. From the results, we can conclude that the utilization rate of computing resources has been effectively improved compared to not considering computing status.

A technique for compressing deep neural models achieving competitive performance to state-of-the-art methods is proposed. the approach utilizes the mutual information between the feature maps and the output of the model in order to prune the redundant layers of the network. Extensive numerical experiments on both CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and Tiny ImageNet data sets demonstrate that the proposed method can be effective in compressing deep models, both in terms of the numbers of parameters and operations. For instance, by applying the proposed approach to DenseNet model with 0.77 million parameters and 293 million operations for classification of CIFAR-10 data set, a reduction of 62.66% and 41.00% in the number of parameters and the number of operations are respectively achieved, while increasing the test error only by less than 1%.

the integration of data along a common spatial component remains an obstacle in many problem spaces. One promising method for integrating data in such a way is through the use of a common, underlying spatial reference system, such as a Discrete Global Grid (e.g., the S2 Grid System), and pre-computing spatial relations between features and the constituent components at a spatial resolution appropriate for the data and use case. that is, by emphasizing the notion of the cell, we can examine what is in a cell, predict contents of its parent and child cells, and quickly get an overview of spatially co-located features and regions of interest without having to directly compute spatial interactions. this paper provides an ontology design pattern, to be used as a structural template, for modeling how features or regions map onto a hierarchical grid system and addresses how the attributes of these features may be inherited upwards or downwards through the hierarchy. We furthermore provide a motivating example and implementation.
