In this paper, we propose a video analytics system to identify the behavior of turkeys. Turkey behavior provides evidence to assess turkey welfare, which can be negatively impacted by uncomfortable ambient temperature and various diseases. In particular, healthy and sick turkeys behave differently in terms of the duration and frequency of activities such as eating, drinking, preening, and aggressive interactions. Our system incorporates recent advances in object detection and tracking to automate the process of identifying and analyzing turkey behavior captured by commercial grade cameras. We combine deep-learning and traditional image processing methods to address challenges in this practical agricultural problem. Our system also includes a web-based user interface to create visualization of automated analysis results. Together, we provide an improved tool for turkey researchers to assess turkey welfare without the time-consuming and labor-intensive manual inspection. © 2021, Society for imaging Science and Technology

As during the last decade the limit between professional and personal usage of smartphones gradually disappeared, the present study is devoted to the tracking of the visual documents scanned by a personal mobile phone for some professional reasons. By a visual document we assume a composition of text, graphics and images corresponding to various physical-world documents (invoices, calls for tenders, legal contracts, etc.). As the scanning (capturing) conditions cannot be reproductible, the main issue is to unambiguously and securely identify various digital representations for a same physical document. A second issue is related to the inherent constraints in resources made available for such a task in the mobile/embedded environment. To jointly solve these issues, a solution based on coupling the blockchain technologies to the visual fingerprinting principles is advanced. The novel elements thus brought to light relate to (1) the coupling of fingerprint and blockchain solutions, (2) the unitary smart contracts generation and management (with illustrations for the Tezos blockchain) and (3) an on-chain / off-chain work balancing solution for coping to the mobile world constraints. The experimental results obtained on a database of more than 10 000 visual documents resulted in F1 score equal up to 0.98 while being compatible with low-resources computing environments (Raspberry Pi). © 2021, Society for imaging Science and Technology

mobile phones are used ubiquitously to capture all kinds of images - food, travel, friends, family, receipts, documents, grocery products and many more. Often times when looking back on photos to relive memories, we want to see images that actually represent experiences and not quick convenience photos that were taken for note-keeping and not deleted. Thus, we need to have a solution that presents only the relevant pictures without showing images of receipts, grocery products etc. - termed in general as utility images. This is in the context of a photobook which compiles and shows relevant images from the photo album of a mobile device. Further, all this has to be done on a mobile device since all the media resides there - introducing the need for our system to work on low power devices. In this paper, we present a work that can distinguish between utility and non-utility images. We also present a dataset of utility images and non-utility images with images for each category mentioned. Furthermore, we present a comparison between accuracies of popular pre-trained neural networks and show the trade-off between size and accuracy. © 2020, Society for imaging Science and Technology.

Infectious diseases and environmental pollution caused by toxic chemical agents such as heavy metals are significant concerns in the global world. For example, Mercury (Hg) and Arsenic (As) have been recognized as chemical threats for human health. It is difficult to achieve multiple detections of different types of targets in lateral flow strips because of the multiple reagent requirements, while microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (m-PADS) can provide independent channels and testing areas for colorimetric analysis. Herein, our group develops a low-cost, multiplexing, instrument-free, and simple paper-based fluidics biosensor to quantitatively determine Hg and As amounts in a linear range of 0 ppm - 30 ppm with a detection limit of 1 ppm and 2 ppm, respectively. We will present an overview of the results obtained with our fabrication process, the design of the preliminary pattern and image analysis of the responses in the test area, and the specificity test and stability test results. © 2020, Society for imaging Science and Technology.

mobile devices typically support input from virtual keyboards or pen-based technologies, allowing handwriting to be a potentially viable text input solution for programming on touchscreen devices. The major problem, however, is that handwriting recognition systems are built to take advantage of the rules of natural languages rather than programming languages. In addition, mobile devices are also inherently restricted by the limitation of screen size and the inconvenient use of a virtual keyboard. In this work, we create a novel handwriting-to-code transformation system on a mobile platform to recognize and analyze source code written directly on a whiteboard or a piece of paper. First, the system recognizes and further compiles the handwritten source code into an executable program. Second, a friendly graphical user interface (GUI) is provided to visualize how manipulating different sections of code impacts the program output. Finally, the coding system supports an automatic error detection and correction mechanism to help address the common syntax and spelling errors during the process of whiteboard coding. The mobile application provides a flexible and user-friendly solution for realtime handwriting-based programming for learners under various environments where the keyboard or touchscreen input is not preferred. © 2020, Society for imaging Science and Technology.

Automobile manufacturers identify paint used on their vehicles with identification codes. However, as many automobile manufacturers use different and proprietary naming conventions to these codes, it can be challenging for a normal person to find the specific type of paint applied to a vehicle. In this paper, we facilitate this process by developing a portable mobile system to detect paint codes for vehicles. To determine the best matching paint code using the images captured by a mobile device, several practical issues should be examined. First of all, multiple images are captured through the camera viewfinder and the same collection of pixel values are computed collectively to estimate the most accurate color across a short period of time. Second, all pixels in a square region centered on the selected spot are sampled for color estimation to achieve the best match. Finally, in case multiple matches are detected, the closest match should be displayed to the user first, followed by the next closest values. Extensive experiments demonstrate the color detection and matching functionality of our system is robust against varying lighting environments. The scope of this work can be further expanded to other painting industries such as furniture making and construction. © 2019, Society for imaging Science and Technology
