To efficiently remove haze in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images, a novel attention-based feedback dehazing network (AFDN) is proposed, which is constructed by feedback connections and attention-based feedback blocks (AFBs). It has three major advantages compared with other dehazing algorithms: 1) The feedback connections, which allow network to use previous state to improve current performance, can effectively help the proposed AFDN generate clear remote sensing scenes progressively. 2) The AFBs are specially designed to extract global residual features, in which the dual attention block can usefully reduce redundant information and improve the fitting ability of network. 3) To obtain abundant texture information from UAV remote sensing images and restore real ground surfaces, an energy loss is employed for texture features learning. Experiments on synthetic datasets and real UAV remote sensing images verify the superiority of AFDN over several state-of-the-art methods in terms of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

images taken in low-light environment often face with low dynamic range or color shift caused by lack of illumination. Although many algorithms have been proposed to enhance these images, not much effort has been made on quality assessment of these enhancement results. In our work, we built a database which contains 30 low-light images (both outdoor and indoor scene included) and enhanced images processed by 11 enhancement algorithms. We conducted a subjective experiment based on this database. We found that no algorithm can behave best with images in all situations. Generally, learning-based methods behave better. Further, we also did objective assessment on the database. © 2021 ACM.

The key to automatic focusing method based on image processing is to construct a fast and accurate focus quality evaluation function. The method in this article introduces Pulse Coupled Neural Network processing. Using the characteristics of the network, through the enhanced image, the grayscale sum can be conveniently used to characterize clarity, thereby simplifying calculations and enhancing the real-time performance of focus control. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Because of the shortcomings of traditional infrared-polarization image fusion algorithm, such as low intelligence and single optimization index, this paper proposes an intelligent infrared-polarization image fusion optimization algorithm based on fireworks algorithm. Based on the strong complementarity between infrared-intensity image and degree of linearpolarization (DOLP) image and the explosive optimization of fireworks algorithm, the problem model of weighted fusion algorithm is established, and the fitness function based on root mean square error (RMSE) is constructed to calculate the optimal weight of source image. In the fusion experiment of long-wave infrared-intensity image and DOLP image, this method is compared with the common fusion algorithms. The results show that this method can effectively fuse the infrared-intensity and degree of polarization information, and the evaluation indexes of standard deviation, spatial frequency, mutual information, structural similarity, peak signal-to-noise ratio and information entropy of the fusion image are better than the comparison algorithm. In the future, cooperated with the long-wave infrared-polarization imaging system, this method can be applied to improve the infrared detection ability in complex environment. © 2021 SPIE.

Weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) is introduced to narrow the gap for semantic segmentation performance from pixel-level supervision to image-level supervision. Most advanced approaches are based on class activation maps (CAMs) to generate pseudo-labels to train the segmentation network. The main limitation of WSSS is that the process of generating pseudo-labels from CAMs that use an image classifier is mainly focused on the most discriminative parts of the objects. To address this issue, we propose Puzzle-CAM, a process that minimizes differences between the features from separate patches and the whole image. Our method consists of a puzzle module and two regularization terms to discover the most integrated region in an object. Puzzle-CAM can activate the overall region of an object using image-level supervision without requiring extra parameters. In experiments, Puzzle-CAM outperformed previous state-of-the-art methods using the same labels for supervision on the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset. Tomato leaf disease has a significant impact on tomato yield. Identifying agricultural diseases is critical for the agricultural sector. Detecting and classifying different tomato diseases is often labor intensive and cumbersome. It is difficult to discover subtle distinguishing traits in different tomatoes disease images, which makes the task of visual categorization of the tomato leaf, based images both challenging and ambiguous. This causes huge scope destruction of harvests, diminishes development and ultimately prompts monetary loss of farmers. Septoria leaf spot, late blight, the bacterial spot, and yellow curved leaf diseases affect the crop quality of tomatoes are a few examples. The implementation's most important difficulty was deciding on a deep learning ***, to address this problem, our workexploits few of the widely used deep learning-based modelslike ResNet50 and InceptionV3Through qualitative analysis, the significance of the deep learning models has been highlighted. © 2021 IEEE.

Many retinal images sometimes suffer from uneven illumination, which influences the analysis and diagnosis of retinal diseases. To improve the image quality of those retinal images, one feasible solution is to utilize low-light image enhancement (LIE) algorithms. However, how to evaluate the perceptual quality of enhanced retinal images (ERIs) generated by different LIE algorithms remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we conduct subjective experiments to investigate the quality assessment of ERIs. First, we collect 250 retinal images with the authentic low-light distortion, and then adopt eight LIE algorithms to produce 2000 ERIs. Second, a subjective experiment is conducted, resulting in the proposed Enhanced Retinal image Quality Assessment Database (ERIQAD). Finally, we test some well-known no reference image quality assessment (NR IQA) methods on our proposed ERIQAD. Experimental results demonstrate that existing mainstream NR IQA methods merely achieve ordinary performance to predict the perceptual quality of ERIs.

Event cameras have provided new opportunities for tackling visual tasks under challenging scenarios over conventional RGB cameras. However, not much focus has been given on event compression algorithms. The main challenge for compressing events is its unique asynchronous form. To address this problem, we propose a novel event compression algorithm based on a quad tree (QT) segmentation map derived from the adjacent intensity images. The QT informs 2D spatial priority within the 3D space-time volume. In the event encoding step, events are first aggregated over time to form polarity-based event histograms. The histograms are then variably sampled via Poisson Disk Sampling prioritized by the QT based segmentation map. Next, differential encoding and run length encoding are employed for encoding the spatial and polarity information of the sampled events, respectively, followed by Huffman encoding to produce the final encoded events. Our algorithm achieves greater than 6x higher compression compared to the state of the art.

Carotid ultrasound images can be used for computer-aided diagnosis of atherosclerosis. However, the low contrast and blurred edges in ultrasound images can reduce the accuracy of the diagnosis. In this study, an image enhancement algorithm is proposed for common carotid artery (CCA) ultrasound images. First, the CCA ultrasound images are normalized. Next, the normalized images are fuzzified by using the S-function. Then, the fuzzified images are enhanced based on non-linear transform. After enhancement, the images are transferred from the fuzzy domain to the spatial domain by using the inverse function. Finally, an edge enhancement method based on the phase asymmetry (PAS) metric is proposed for CCA ultrasound images. The final results indicate that the proposed method has outstanding performance as compared with other advanced methods. © 2021 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) enables collaborative model training across clients while preserving data privacy. However, FL faces the challenge of data heterogeneity, leading to biased local models that deviate from the global model during optimization. And existing FL algorithms like Federated Averaging (FedAvg) suffer from this issue. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach called multi-branch prototype federated learning (FedMBP). FedMBP creates auxiliary branches within each local model to integrate different levels of local and global prototypes, thus preventing local model drift by aligning local prototypes with global ones. We also introduce mixed cross-entropy on the auxiliary branches to effectively transfer global prototype knowledge to local models. We conduct experiments on three publicly available datasets, including natural and medical image domains. Our experiments demonstrate that FedMBP outperforms existing FL algorithms, achieving superior model performance.
