In this paper, we provide an analysis on the partial overlapping order problem in a strip, i.e., whether a given partial order involving only part of the squares of the strip corresponds to a valid flat-folded state of the strip or not. On the contrary to the general intractability of partial orders, we investigated the partial orders onto some particular sets to obtain tractable results. To rapidly get access to the solution, our methodology is based on the abstracted visualized folded states rather than a mathematical explanation by matrix. In conclusion, a strip having at least three disordered squares aligning on the strip between any two of its ordered squares always corresponds to a final flat-folded state. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

Malaria is a major vector-borne disease that has been generating a serious health burden and devastating the economy of Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific and Americas. In this paper, a mathematical model for low and high malaria risk human population groups, incorporating four control variables representing insecticide treated nets, treatment, indoor residual spraying and intermittent preventive treatment;seasonally forced mosquito population and transmission parameters, is formulated. The necessary conditions for the optimality of the model are derived using the Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle. The optimal control model is numerically explored using Runge-Kutta method of order four. Experimental results show that the model is able to indicate the best control strategy, given the estimated costs of implementation of the varying control measures. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The wireless capsule endoscope can comprehensively inspect the digestive tract. It has the advantages of safety, painlessness, and no postoperative reaction, but it has some disadvantages. When the most critical issue is, the entire inspection process is very time-consuming. Using image segmentation technology, the digestive tract lesion tissue and surrounding areas can be locally enhanced, and the Region of Interest (ROI) can be segmented, which is helpful for the doctor to read the image. Based on the Mask R-CNN network, this paper proposes a wireless capsule endoscope lesion image segmentation method. Experimental results show that this method can achieve effective segmentation of the capsule lens lesion image. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

The wave transmission characteristics of metamaterial dielectric slab is studied, and the expressions of total reflection and transmission coefficients of multilayer structure composed of metamaterial and dielectric slabs are deduced. Based on the theory of small reflection approximation, a high-performance reflection coating can be made by applying metamaterial multilayer dielectric structure, which can effectively improve the electromagnetic external shielding performance. © 2023 The Authors.

Aiming at problems of reconfigurable systems such as dynamic change of structure composition, integration of hardware and software, difficulty in RMS modeling and simulation analysis by traditional methods, the advantages of generalized stochastic Petri net (GSPN) in characterization and analysis of dynamic change process of complex systems are considered. The RMS modeling technology of reconfigurable system based on GSPN is studied, the transformation method of UML and GSPN is explored, and the method and process of RMS simulation analysis based on Monte Carlo sampling and discrete event simulation of reconfigurable system is proposed. This paper provides technical support for reconfigurable system scheme design and optimization and system RMS index verification and evaluation. © 2023 The Authors.

This paper established a one-dimensional model of a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a single dielectric layer covering the high-voltage electrode. The mixture of Ar and a small amount of CH4 was used as working gas, the influence of different voltage amplitude on the discharge characteristics was studied by 10.0 kHz microsecond pulsed power. The simulation results show that the discharge current curve presents bipolar characteristics with different intensities are generated in a single microsecond pulse period, and the primary discharge is much intense. The discharge current, discharge power can enhance by increasing the discharge voltage amplitude. The equivalent capacitance Cg also increases, the discharge voltage has no significant effect on Cd. In the experiment, it can be observed that the number of discharge filaments in the discharge gap increases with the increase of voltage amplitude, and photoionization is formed near the anode. The result of the current experimental trend is almost the same as the simulated current. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, in order to solve the problems of many questions from trainees, poor efficiency of teachers in answering questions and high work intensity in the process of thermal power plant simulation practice, this paper proposes an intelligent training expert guidance system for thermal power plant simulation, and this paper uses Visual C++ software programming to implement an intelligent training expert guidance system with voice interaction and video presentation functions, using the speech development package Microsoft Speech SDK, in-depth study of the SAPI it provides, design and implementation of speech recognition function and speech synthesis function. The XML file is used to define the types of questions and the corresponding Q&A test statements for keyword extraction;the video presentation function is realized with the help of Windows Media Player. The test results show that, based on the successful speech recognition, the system can simulate the way of dialogue between teachers and learners and answer learners' questions in real time. The system has an open function, users can add questions independently, expand the database in real time, jump out of the traditional limitations of space, time and geography, and increase the interest of learning. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

Due to the nonlinear behaviour in hydraulic shake table system and control-structure-interaction (CSI) effect, the phase-lag between displacement command and response can be clearly discovered in time domain. This problem is very crucial since the phase-lag of the actuator control can diminish the testing fidelity and might cause numerical instability in real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS). In this paper, the optimal model-based control algorithm named model predictive control (MPC) is adopted to compensate the time delay of the hydraulic shake table control system. The performance of the newly developed MPC is compared to that of the state-of-the-art PID controller numerically. The results show that the proposed MPC algorithm can successfully improve the tracking performance and time delay issue of the hydraulic shake table control system. This fact makes MPC a great method to implement the hydraulic shake table control part for the RTHS application. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

Developing countries in Asia face challenges in reducing Non-revenue Water (NRW) and long-term effort is required for water supply companies. The strategies to address NRW mainly include increasing metering accuracy, pipeline rehabilitation, water use management etc., and District Meter Area (DMA) is one of efficient methods to control NRW. This paper describes methodology of designing DMA for water distribution network combined with hydraulic modelling in City A of South Asia. DMA design was implemented and the objection of the project is to reduce the present high levels of NRW. Firstly referring to as-built drawings, proposal for feeder mains was developed based on the Master Plan (target year 2040). Then according to the natural boundary, water supply situation, water quality etc., 19 DMAs were detailly designed. At last, a global model assembling all DMAs and feeder mains was done and applied to analyse the security of supply and check fire flow requirements. On the basis of the design work, construction of feeder mains and DMAs was carried out gradually, and metering facilities and valves were installed as required. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

Evaluating Machine Learning methods for estimation in online surveys with superpopulation modeling

Online surveys, despite their cost and effort advantages, are particularly prone to selection bias due to the differences between target population and potentially covered population (online population). This leads to the unreliability of estimates coming from online samples unless further adjustments are applied. Some techniques have arisen in the last years regarding this issue, among which superpopulation modeling can be useful in Big Data context where censuses are accessible. This technique uses the sample to train a model capturing the behavior of a target variable which is to be estimated, and applies it to the nonsampled individuals to obtain population-level estimates. The modeling step has been usually done with linear regression or LASSO models, but machine learning (ML) algorithms have been pointed out as promising alternatives. In this study we examine the use of these algorithms in the online survey context, in order to evaluate and compare their performance and adequacy to the problem. A simulation study shows that ML algorithms can effectively volunteering bias to a greater extent than traditional methods in several scenarios.
