In classification, feature selection (FS) removes irrelevant and redundant features to improve the classification performance. Most of the existing FS approaches are designed specifically for single-label classification, wherein each instance is associated to a single class label. However, many real-world problems have more than one class label for each instance, also known as multi-label classification (MLC). Label-to-label interactions in MLC information presents a new challenge for FS, whereas single-label FS methods typically only consider feature-to-feature (redundancy) and feature-to-label (relevancy) information. Sparsity-based FS is an efficient and effective method for MLC which has demonstrated its ability in considering label-to-label interactions. However, existing sparsity-based approaches can be trapped at local optima due to their gradient-based search. In addition, they cannot consider different trade-off between the two objectives of FS: to minimise the number of features and to maximise the classification performance. Evolutionary multi-objective optimisation (EMO) can address the above issues, but EMO has not been applied to achieve sparsity-based FS for MLC. This paper proposes a novel sparsity-based representation, objective function, and local search method to achieve sparsity-based EMO FS for MLC. The experimental results indicate improved efficiency and effectiveness in the MLC performance in comparison to existing state-of-the-art multi-label feature selection methods.

Graphs represent real world relationships, and graph embedding projects nodes in a graph to a latent space that can help simplify downstream tasks. Recent development of graph convolutions in deep learning significantly improves the performance of many learning tasks on graphs. Unfortunately, prior embedding methods either do not embed graphs with node features, or fail to produce high-quality embeddings for downstream learning tasks that result in large performance gap in comparison to direct learning on *** present a versatile and effective embedding method, Conv2Vec, for embedding graphs with or without node features. It is based on graph convolutions with objective functions motivated by concepts and structures from classical graph algorithms. Conv2Vec produce high-quality embedding for both plain graphs and graphs with node features for downstream *** evaluate the embeddings generated by Conv2Vec with a transductive node classification task. With the generated embeddings and very simple machine learning approaches, we are able to achieve accuracies similar to those achieved by direct learning with graph convolutions. Interestingly, if we strip the node features from the graph and thus learning an embedding has to rely entirely on the graph topology, node classification with our embedding significantly outperforms direct learning with various graph convolutions. This suggests that structures from classical graph algorithms may play an important role in learning on graphs.

Multicore processors are ubiquitous. Several prior research has emphasized the need for high productivity parallel programming models that require minimal changes to the sequential program and can still deliver high performance using runtimes based approaches on various architectures. In this paper, we present the structure and experience of teaching the Foundations of Parallel programming course (FPP) at IIIT Delhi using a task-based parallel programming model, Habanero C/C++ Library (HClib). FPP covers a wide breadth of topics in parallel programming but emphasizes both high productivity and high performance. It is being offered at IIIT Delhi in the spring semester for undergraduate and postgraduate students since 2017. We describe our novel approach where the students start the learning process using the traditional parallel programming models, discover the underlying limitations, and build runtime solutions to achieve high performance.

Intent-based programming enables software-defined networks (SDN) to be able to dynamically reconfigure themselves through automatic intent recomputation in response to network events, such as host mobility. This allows SDN to be used as a platform for new technologies such as swarms of drones in data-driven agriculture. At the same time, this dynamicity results in SDN networks having a very large state space - whose size is further exacerbated when SDN controllers are distributed for reliability and scalability. This renders infeasible comprehensive testing or verification of network performance prior to deployment, necessitating the use of monitoring at run-time, together with associated abortive or healing actions to ensure reliability. However, as intent recomputation time can vary significantly based on the underlying network topologies, it is very difficult to experimentally determine the boundary between normal expected performance and anomalous performance at scale, and hence to specify when these actions should take place. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of machine learning to automatically learn intent recomputation performance; the resulting predictions can be used as input into the specification of run-time monitors and the determination of associated reliability mitigations. More specifically, we describe our proof-of-concept case study on using linear regression to predict the expected time for intent recomputation due to host mobility on the distributed ONOS open-source SDN controller.

Dynamic fault trees (DFT) with priority-AND (PAND) gates are widely used in modeling systems with sequence-dependent failure behavior. We defined events as Boolean variables, and we show that by adding to a new Boolean operator denoted PRIOR and introducing the conditioning events, it is possible to mode the sequence-dependent failure behaviors between components in the PAND gate. A set of theorems based on PRIOR are provided to express the structure-function in a sum-of-products canonical form. Then, we propose two rules to generate the hybrid binary decision diagram (HBDD) model of the system. The HBDD can be applied to both PAND systems (DFTs model with PAND gates) and static systems (static fault tree models) with any arbitrary component time-to-failure distributions and different component failure parameter values. Also, the combinatorial method can avoid the generation of invalid nodes when building HBDDs. The application and advantages of the proposed solution are illustrated through an analysis of the case study.

This paper presents the state of the art of the main hardware families used for teaching methods of automatic and control during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three case studies based on practical labs in Junia HEI: Fuzzy logic for control, modeling and simulation of a photovoltaic system under Matlab/Simulink/Simpower and application development workshops in Java are analyzed. The feedbacks and the analysis of advantages show that automatic teaching continued to combine theory and practice despite the sanitary crisis and emphasize the importance of Matlab tool in automation and control teaching and learning.

With a growing threat of cyber-attacks, network intrusion detection remains challenging in the domain of cyberspace security. To defend against cyber-attacks on computer systems, various machine learning approaches have been applied for intrusion detection over the past few decades, such as random forest, support vector machine and long short-term memory. Although most of these approaches can provide satisfactory detection performances in terms of accuracy, recall and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), their performances rely heavily on the training sample amount of attacks. When the type of attacks is unknown and the training sample amount is insufficient, the performances of these approaches may degenerate more or less. Therefore, based on a recently emerging approximate logic neural model (ALNM), a novel intrusion detection approach termed ALNM-IDA is proposed to overcome the issue in this paper. In the ALNM-IDA, the k-means clustering is first applied to discretize continuous features, and the maximum relevance minimum redundancy is adopted to select essential features. Then, the training dataset of normal and attack inputs is fed to the ALNM. In addition, adaptive moment estimation (Adam) is used as the training algorithm to improve the detection performance and accelerate the training phase. To validate the effectiveness of the ALNM-IDA, three benchmark intrusion detection datasets are employed in our experiments. Comparative results demonstrate that the ALNM-IDA can provide superior detection performance than other widely-used machine learning approaches in the case of insufficient training information.

Open Transit Data (OTD) availability presents an excellent opportunity for commuter-centric applications. Applications that use OTD to inform users about their commute. Moreover, the current scenario demands applications that make travel in public transit safer and more comfortable. To this cause, we present a contactless e-ticketing solution for public transport buses allowing passengers to purchase tickets in a contactless manner. It is currently in a trial phase since September and has sold over 200k tickets. The system also presents opportunities for third-party vendors to develop similar solutions.

We present a composable design scheme for the development of hybrid quantum/classical algorithms and workflows for applications of quantum simulation. Our object-oriented approach is based on constructing an expressive set of common data structures and methods that enable programming of a broad variety of complex hybrid quantum simulation applications. The abstract core of our scheme is distilled from the analysis of the current quantum simulation algorithms. Subsequently, it allows a synthesis of new hybrid algorithms and workflows via the extension, specialization, and dynamic customization of the abstract core classes defined by our design. We implement our design scheme using the hardware-agnostic programming language QCOR into the QuaSiMo library. To validate our implementation, we test and show its utility on commercial quantum processors from IBM, running some prototypical quantum simulations.

Hand in hand with the inevitable increase in vehicle connectivity solutions, the high security and safety demands for automotive embedded systems are emphasizing the importance of thorough testing of newly developed software components. The software quality is ensured through the usage of various tools at the development stage. This paper introduces an implementation of such a tool, which is based on a standard microcontroller platform and provides functionalities of a Rapid Prototyping System (RPS). The solution is based on the universal calibration protocol XCP and use of an XCP-Master controller. The tool also acts as an intelligent watchdog, as it enables close behavioural monitoring of novel functionalities within an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Hence, the tool is specially apt for dependable AI testing in the scope of safety-critical applications. This is potentially a key building block of a safety net for testing of novel functionalities on a 'grey-box-like' ECU. The XCP-Master controller also provides the possibility to utilize the platform as an Ethernet-CAN message gateway for access to remote devices.
