The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) applications inflicts high requirements for computing resources and network bandwidth. A growing number of service providers are applying edge-cloud computing to improve the quality of their services. Deploying IoT applications to optimal computing nodes to minimize energy consumption and enhance system performance remains an open challenge. In this paper, we present an intelligent orchestration concept for breaking down IoT applications into granular microservices, called nanoservices, and deploying them in an energy-aware manner to optimal computing nodes in the edge-cloud continuum by applying resource and network slicing methods. With this consolidated slicing scheme, we can efficiently allocate network and compute resources to meet the needs of these nanoservices. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In recent years, edge AI has become more prevalent with applications across various industries, from environmental monitoring to smart city management. edge AI facilitates the processing of Internet of Things (IoT) data and provides privacy-enabled and latency-sensitive services to application users using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, e.g., Time Series Classification (TSC). However, existing TSC algorithms require access to full raw data and demand substantial computing resources to train and use them effectively in runtime. This makes them impractical for deployment in resource-constrained edge environments. To address this, in this paper, we propose an Adaptive Brownian Bridge-based Symbolic Aggregation Vector Space Model (ABBA-VSM). It is a new TSC model designed for classification services on edge. Here, we first adaptively compress the raw time series into symbolic representations, thus capturing the changing trends of data. Subsequently, we train the classification model directly on these symbols. ABBA-VSM reduces communication data between IoT and edge devices, as well as computation cycles, in the development of resource-efficient TSC services on edge. We evaluate our solution with extensive experiments using datasets from the UCR time series classification archive. The results demonstrate that the ABBA-VSM achieves up to 80% compression ratio and 90-100% accuracy for binary classification. Whereas, for non-binary classification, it achieves an average compression ratio of 60% and accuracy ranging from 60-80%.

The edge computing environments enable the development of pervasive applications distributed across extensive geographical areas, overcoming specific issues associated with centralized information processing, such as network bandwidth saturation and the need for large computing infrastructures. This work presents two case studies of deploying applications for environmental monitoring on low-energy and high-performance edge computing devices, employing accelerated artificial intelligence techniques based on GPUs. The first problem entails the classification of various materials within hyperspectral images, while the second problem focuses on identifying floating plastic debris. The applications were validated on a Nvidia Jetson Nano sensor board, demonstrating good accuracy, effectiveness, and energy consumption results. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The huge amount of data generated by IoT devices at the edge of the network poses challenges for centralized cloud platforms due to latency, bandwidth, and scalability issues. The edge-cloud continuum has emerged as a powerful solution, combining edge and cloud computing to process data locally while using cloud resources for intensive tasks. However, the lack of shared standards across platforms leads to highly platform-dependent applications. This paper presents a new framework that leverages abstraction to define platform-independent applications within the edge-cloud continuum. The framework enables the identification of suitable deployment configurations and optimal service selection, ensuring that quality of service (QoS), data locality and security constraints are met. The proposal addresses the challenges of seamless integration across the continuum, contributing to the development of flexible and scalable applications. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we discussed a case study in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) domain, demonstrating how it facilitates the development of applications within the edge-cloud continuum. © 2024 The Authors. FREEDA is an ongoing research project aimed at supporting DevOps engineers in achieving failure-resilient and sustainable deployments of microservice-based applications across the Cloud-edge computing continuum. This paper first introduces the context and core concept of FREEDA, followed by a focus on how it enhances the failure resilience of microservices deployed across the Cloud-edge continuum. Specifically, we present a declarative approach for generating deployment constraints designed to enhance the resilience of microservices prior to their deployment. Additionally, we introduce a proof-of-concept implementation and highlight its potential through an illustrative example. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2025.

With the rapid advancement of wireless networks, edge computing has emerged as a promising paradigm for providing computing services to nearby latency-sensitive applications. Toward this trend, resource trading markets among mobile users (MUs) and edge clouds are emerging which need well-designed allocation and pricing mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a double auction-based multi-market resource trading framework (DAMRT), which integrates the dynamic programming and padding-based double auction methods, aiming to achieve approximate social welfare maximization and guarantee the properties of truthfulness and budget balance in the constrained edge computing system. To be specific, for admission control among different base station (BS) central markets, a dynamic programming-based method is proposed to obtain the optimal BS-MU association set. For each market, a truthful padding-based double auction resource allocation mechanism (TPDA) is proposed, which uses a linear programming-based padding method and a binary search algorithm to obtain the near-optimal allocation solution, and leverages a critical-value and a VCG-based pricing strategy for winning MUs and service providers. Our theoretical analysis proves that TPDA achieves truthfulness, individual rationality, and budget balance. Furthermore, simulation results verify the effectiveness of DAMRT. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

We tackle an optimization problem related to the deployment of delay-sensitive services on computing facilities at the edge of the network. We consider an online setting, in which a service provider must dynamically decide where to activate services, in absence of information about upcoming users and deployment costs. We model the application as an online facility location problem under the assumption that serving each user yields a reward which is proportional to the network distance between the user and the serving facility. We propose an online algorithm to tackle such problem. It exploits mathematical programming in an online learning framework. As main feature, it updates the deployment decision after a batch of users has appeared, fitting two operational policies: to refresh decisions after batches of fixed cardinality, or to refresh at constant time intervals, thereby handling batches of variable sizes. We experiment our algorithm with simulations using a stochastic generator, built on real internet connection records. We compare the two operational policies in terms of applicability, profit and computational time. Our results indicate that using batches of variable size allow for easier policy application, with no significant decrease in profits, and only a minor increase in performance variability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
