Upcoming space missions put new challenges in the domain of space-Ground communication, in terms of higher downlink data rates data volumes, and usage of less reliable communication links. These challenges, together with the goal to facilitate the data handling on Ground, pushed for the development and the usage of the File Based Operations (FBO) and protocols, like the CFDP, for automatic, selective retransmission of lost data. CO2M is the first Sentinels Mission to be launched, where the FBO and CFDP are implemented as per the Standards defined in the ESA Sentinel PUS-C Tailoring. Such protocols are used for the TC uplink, the Recorded HKTM downlink, and the Mission data downlink. The present paper deals with the consequent CO2M Satellite DHS peculiarities, in terms of architecture, data flow, and implemented Unit's functionalities. © 2023 ESA.

This work covers the design of an edge AI computing platform targeting CubeSats, based on commercial off-the-shelf components, developed jointly by AAC Hyperion and the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR). We present the architectural design of the unit from both a software and a hardware perspective as well as the TID/SEE testing campaign results. Capabilities for future developments using the proposed design as a foundation are also discussed. © 2023 ESA.

This document presents a hardware-software co-design demonstrator which is executed both in a Virtual Platform composed by SystemC/TLM models, and an actual COTS development board, with the objective of exhibiting the benefits of using such a flow for fast prototyping, early design space exploration decisions and co-engineering of software and hardware. Several enhancements are implemented in the Virtual Platform, and several use cases representative of potential space applications are executed in the demonstrator both in the Virtual Platform and on the actual hardware platform. The co-execution allows to compare the metrics obtained on the platform with the actual metrics obtained on the hardware, illustrating the usefulness of the HW-SW co-design approach. © 2023 ESA.

The Universal processing Module (UPM) is a sophisticated high speed digital hardware for spaceborne microwave applications incorporating in one single device most of the functionalities of the digital backend. The critical components of the UPM (ADCs, DACs, FPGA etc.) and their performance are the forefront of what is feasible for space as of today, hence UPM is a cutting-edge performance device. The customizable design of UPM itself, modular concept allowing performance extension by implementation of multiple modules and customization of the algorithms running on the device allow an application of UPM in multiple types of missions: from simple SAR payloads with classical performance up to sophisticated SAR Systems based on digital beamforming with a large number of digital channels. UPM is at a very advance development status and this paper describes the concept of the UPM, its key features and performance parameters. © 2023 ESA.

We have started the development of a new payload Control and data processing Unit (CDPU) targeted towards SmallSats. The CDPU will act as a hub for (optical) instruments that forms a logical bridge between the instruments and the SmallSat platform. It will offer standardized hardware interfaces for integrated optical instruments, as well as sophisticated facilities for processing the science data before it is sent down to earth. We defined a modular architecture to allow flexibility in interfaces and functions, with advanced and reliable in-orbit FPGA reprogrammability. The component quality class and applied development processes are chosen such to target for an in-orbit design lifetime in the order of 5 to 10 years. © 2023 ESA.

Selecting the correct file system is critical for space applications where risks are present. This study systematically maps and tests Ext4 versus ZFS for onboard data processing on the iX10-100 and iX5-100 payload processors. The test sets are presented along with results on several performance metrics. The conclusion is that both ZFS and Ext4 are useful, but based on certain considerations of onboard data processing, Ext4 is better than the other. © 2023 ESA.

*** RC64 rad-hard manycore processor is designed for artificial intelligence/machine learning computations based on deep learning. VGG-based neural network classification of space imagery of three different types is demonstrated. Machine learning models and imagery are provided by Aiko space, Mobius Labs and space Shift. Image frames of 32×32 pixels are classified at 65 frames per second, achieving power efficiency of 12.5 frames per second per Watt. © 2023 ESA.

This paper proposes an end-to-end data-processing chain for CubeSats, specifically for module development and validation. The proposed chain covers data acquisition, machine-learning-enabled on-board processing, storage, and data down-link. The authors demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed chain by implementing a prototype in a commercial-off-the-shelf CubeSat testbed. The data processing chain is designed to be easily extendable and uses open-source software where possible to increase the accessibility of the solution and aid low-cost integration with future modules. Together with the CubeSat testbed, it offers a complete testing and validation environment for internal and external module developments. Therefore, it has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of work needed to integrate and test newly developed modules in a full CubeSat. Future work could include integrating high-speed, file-based downlink capabilities and extending the operational scenario in which the data-processing chain is operated to simulate a real-world scenario better and extend possible validation capabilities. © 2023 ESA.
