This paper presents the results of an ESA activity in the area of onboard data networks aiming at defining a deterministic protocol layer for spaceWire and spaceFibre networks. The main objective of the activity is the development of a global solution for determinism for spaceWire and spaceFibre that works primarily at network level (i.e. within routing switch devices), allowing therefore to build fully deterministic networks with both protocol-aware and legacy spaceWire/spaceFibre nodes. The work has been performed under the ESA study entitled spaceWire Network Management Service Suite definition and validation. © 2023 ESA.

Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission [1], [2], has been selected by ESA in March 2018 and adopted in November 2020 by the Agency for the fourth medium-class mission (M4) launch opportunity of the Cosmic Vision Program, scheduled in 2029. It is the first survey mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of the atmospheres of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, in order to enable planetary science far beyond the boundaries of our own Solar System. The Payload (P/L) and its electrical, electronic and data handling architecture, scope of this digest, has been designed and optimized to perform transit spectroscopy from space during primary and secondary planetary eclipses in order to achieve a large set of unbiased observations related to the nature of exoplanets atmospheres, retrieving information about planets interior and determining the key factors affecting the formation and evolution of planetary systems. © 2023 ESA.

Frequency stacking in the analog domain is used to replace multiple narrowband ADCs with a wideband ADC, supporting multiple antenna elements for digital satellite beamforming. This analog front end provides a cost-effective solution by offering a common broadband digital interface to the onboard processor, which can be configured for multiple satellite missions. This paper is on specifying the prototype filters to analyse frequency-stacked mobile sub-bands in the digital domain. The paper further presents results and observations that demonstrates the effectiveness of this specification for a given mobile narrowband communication scenario. This paper describes how different IP Cores for on-board high-speed data interfaces have been developed and verified by IngeniArs S.r.l. These are the CODECs and Routers implementing spaceWire and spaceFibre communication protocols, i.e., the actual state-of-the-art for on-board data exchange in space applications. A balance between meeting customer data requirements and delivering timely, tailored solutions is critical. The Astral Intelligence Toolbox is a framework that provides a modular, reconfigurable architecture for developing and deploying software applications for on-board processing. Different use cases, processing targets and data sources can be rapidly targeted using a combination of reusable software components and development tools. This allows customer requirements to be quickly mapped to component selection and configuration. Applications can then be iteratively developed from demonstration through to flight. Case studies for configured applications are presented and result shown, based on engagements with end users during an ESA InCubed activity. © 2023 ESA.

The Intelligent space Camera (ISC) is a compact space camera with embedded Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence capabilities, that can address applications requiring high-Throughput smart processing directly at source. The camera, incorporating both hardware and software elements, is being developed in the frame of an ESA co-funded project to support space situational awareness, visual FDIR, and docking applications, among others. The camera, built around the Myriad X Vision processing Unit (VPU), supports RTSP streaming, H.265 encoding, dynamic remote reconfiguration, and in-line AI stream processing at framerate, all directly on-camera. processing results can be sent to the host as metadata or overlaid on the RTSP stream (e.g., as bounding boxes). This paper describes the system in its current form from a software and hardware point of view, as well as its key features and main use cases. © 2023 ESA.

data Center in space (DCiS) offers high performance space computing similar to small terrestrial data centers, including storage, networking, and cloud computing. When operated using software platforms from commercial Cloud Service Providers, the range of enabled applications is quite similar to terrestrial clouds. DCiS is targeted to operate reliably for longer than 30 years in any space environment, employing on-board AI-based FDIR and self-healing. Packaged in less than one cubic meter, DCiS offers about 13 TFLOP, 100 AI/ML TOPS and 3.5 TB storage while dissipating 12 kWatt. DCiS can be amended with subsystems employing COTS devices for shorter lifetime missions, enabling AI/ML performance of 38 PetaOPS and adding one PB storage, consuming additional 14 kWatt. © 2023 ESA.
