Paddy planting becomes the primary source of income and livelihood for paddy farmers, especially small-scale farmers and landless laborers. Unfortunately, rice production has been threatened by paddy disease. The bacteria leaf blight disease (BLB) is one of Malaysia’s most significant paddy diseases, causing substantial harm to rice production. This study aims to determine the bacteria leaf blight (BLB) disease from the utilized techniques of RGB-Based Vegetation Indices and Fuzzy Logic on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images during the first paddy season 2022 in Perlis. In this study, the RGB-based indices of Normalized Green Red Different Index (NGRDI) and Green Leaf Index (GLI) were applied to the UAV images captured at 20m altitudes. Then the fuzzy logic classification technique was applied to identify the BLB disease severity which consists of healthy and infected paddy leaves with the acceptable accuracy of 90.16%. Based on the classified BLB severeness with fuzzy logic, the result shows that the NGRDI was more significant to identify paddy disease in the area. In contrast, the GLI index is more significant to identify the non-paddy area. The NGRDI and GLI index ranges for BLB were found between -0.054 to 0.092 and 0.005 to 0.222. For more improvement of the study, the multispectral UAV image should be applied to increase the accuracy of paddy disease detection like BLB and the images will also be taken and verified in other paddy plots with the aid of a spectroradiometer.

This paper discusses a system that detects bowling posture and corrects it by image analysis using frame difference and image processing algorithms. Using a Kinect as the main sensor, we were able to create a system that uses skeletal imaging to obtain coordinate data of the body which is converted to angle form and compared with a reference with a set tolerance. Python was used as the main programming language because of the easy integration of the Py Kinect library that is responsible for the manifestation of the skeletal frame on the subject. The four-step approach was used as the reference for the correct bowling posture and was assessed by a professional bowler. The results taken were also shown to the coach to ensure accuracy. Correlation Analysis was used as the statistical tool to prove the similarity of the data taken from the program and the evaluation of the professional coach.

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) due to their excellent accuracy, have emerged as the leading machine learning method. However, it becomes difficult to deploy CNN algorithms on hardware platforms because of their high memory bandwidth, computational complexity, and power consumption. Hardware accelerators such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), Graphics processing Unit (GPU), etc. are excellent platforms for modelling CNN algorithms. The purpose of the paper is to run a standard software process in hardware and exploit natural parallelism in hardware to speed up neural network prediction. The paper presents a rule-based synthesizable Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA) Advanced eXtensible Interface (AXI) protocol for high-speed data transmission. The paper develops a computer vision system on an FPGA that could recognize the numbers 0 through 9 written by hand for the capstone design project. The findings show that 91% accuracy is achieved through Rectified linear activation unit (ReLU) which can be increased to 98% by implementing the Sigmoid activation function with a depth of 10 bits. The method provides good accuracy and clock performance while using few resources.

Nowadays, many computer vision (CV) techniques require high-precision feature point detection in calibration targets. Checkerboards or circle grids are common patterns used to infer the locations of the points directly from the image. However, such approaches can lead to degradation in sub-pixel accuracy for low-resolution or sub-sampled sensor data (e.g., Bayer pattern). This paper proposes a target-based calibration technique applicable to various conventional CV methods, leveraging the moiré phenomena. We use a moiré pattern that is created between the digital camera’s pixels and the high-frequency texture on the calibration target. Even a tiny movement of the target or camera leads to a significant motion of the moiré, acting as a magnifier of the target texture for estimating accurate location of targets or camera. In contrast to previous moiré approaches that employ frequency domain analyses, we introduce the moiré coordinates and derive them from the difference between the sensor and target texture position. In the moiré coordinate, each moiré pattern is undistorted. Unlike moiré in standard images, each moiré pattern has almost the same scale and shape in these coordinates. Utilizing this property, we propose a straightforward algorithm to detect and handle correspondence in the moiré peaks in image and texture location, treating them as feature points of calibration target. In addition, the moiré vision can magnify pixels, which means the pattern in the moiré coordinate visualizes the pixel sensitivity with high spatial resolution. To validate the proposed approach, we present an empirical evaluation using simulated and real Bayer sensor patterns. We show the advantages of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and identify promising future directions.

Transformers have recently dominated a wide range of tasks in natural language processing. To obtain competitive image classification performance, the Vision Transformer (ViT) is the first computer vision model to rely exclusively on the Transformer architecture. Despite the success of vision Transformers at large scale, the performance is still below similarly sized convolutional neural network (CNN) counterparts (e.g., ResNets). We present in this paper a new architecture, named Residual Vision Transformer (Res-Vit), that improves Vision Transformer (ViT) in performance and efficiency by introducing Residual networks into ViT to yield the best of both designs. The classic architecture of ViT is mainly modified by: (i) a hierarchy of Transformers containing a new residual token embedding, and (ii) a residual Transformer block leveraging a residual projection. Moreover, the positional encoding, a crucial component in existing vision transformers, can be safely removed in the ResVit model, simplifying the design for higher resolution vision tasks. We validate Res-Vit by conducting extensive experiments, showing that this approach achieves state-of-the-art performance over other Vision Transformers and ResNets on imageNet-1k. In addition, performance gains are maintained when pretrained on larger datasets (e.g. imageNet-22k) and fine-tuned to downstream tasks. Pretrained on imageNet-22k, our Res-Vit obtains a top-1 accuracy on the imageNet-1k proving that the Res-ViT model is a promising approach for image classification offering improved performance, efficiency, and robustness.

Accurate segmentation of topological tubular structures, such as blood vessels and roads, is crucial in various fields, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in downstream tasks. However, many factors complicate the task, including thin local structures and variable global morphologies. In this work, we note the specificity of tubular structures and use this knowledge to guide our DSCNet to simultaneously enhance perception in three stages: feature extraction, feature fusion, and loss constraint. First, we propose a dynamic snake convolution to accurately capture the features of tubular structures by adaptively focusing on slender and tortuous local structures. Subsequently, we propose a multi-view feature fusion strategy to complement the attention to features from multiple perspectives during feature fusion, ensuring the retention of important information from different global morphologies. Finally, a continuity constraint loss function, based on persistent homology, is proposed to constrain the topological continuity of the segmentation better. Experiments on 2D and 3D datasets show that our DSCNet provides better accuracy and continuity on the tubular structure segmentation task compared with several methods. Our codes are publicly available 1 .

Deep Learning is proving its immense potential in medical image processing. However, noisy label data can weaken the generalization ability of the model and cause significant performance degradation. This issue can be more prevalent in multi-label classification tasks, since their annotation is more challenging. With too many labels, human annotators may have difficulties mentioning all possible classes, which leads to an increased number of false negative labels. Single Positive Multi-Label (SPML) training deals with the most severe version of this problem, in which for each sample only one positive label is available. All other labels are not observed, i.e. not confirmed as positive or negative. While SPML has already achieved good results for the multi-label detection of objects, its impact on the extremely pertinent medical imaging use case has not yet been explored. In this work, we therefore investigate the performance of state-of-the-art SPML loss functions in the analysis of chest X-rays, both on the public CheXpert and on an in-house data set of the University Hospital Bonn. In addition, we propose our new SPML loss functions, the Generalized Assume Negative and Implicit Weighting Assume Negative loss, which increase the mean average precision by up to 4.6% compared to the popular binary cross-entropy loss.

Sixth generation (6G) cellular communications are expected to support enhanced wireless localization capabilities. The widespread deployment of large arrays and high-frequency bandwidths give rise to new considerations for localization applications. Emerging antenna architectures, such as dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs), are expected to be frequently utilized thanks to the achievable high angular resolution and low hardware complexity. Further, wireless localization is likely to take place in the radiating near-field (Fresnel) region, which provides new degrees of freedom, because of the adoption of arrays with large apertures. While current studies mostly focus on the use of costly fully-digital antenna arrays, in this paper we investigate how DMAs can be applied for near-field localization of a single user. We use a direct positioning estimation method based on curvature-of-arrival of the impinging wavefront to obtain the user location, and characterize the effects of DMA tuning on the estimation accuracy. Next, we propose an algorithm for configuring the DMA to optimize near-field localization, by first tuning the adjustable DMA coefficients to minimize the estimation error using postulated knowledge of the actual user position. Finally, we propose a sub-optimal iterative algorithm that does not rely on such knowledge. Simulation results show that the DMA-based near-field localization accuracy could approach that of fully-digital arrays at lower cost.

Aiming at the difficulties in object detection and recognition in remote sensing images caused by high background complexity, large scale variations of targets, and the presence of numerous small objects, an improved method for remote sensing image object detection based on YOLOv7-tiny is proposed. This method combines the loss function based on normalized Gaussian Wasserstein distance (NWD) with the CIoU loss function to address the problem of sensitivity to positional deviation of small objects by IoU-Loss. The addition of a global attention mechanism (GAM) in the backbone network reduces information diffusion and enhances the interaction at the global dimension to mitigate the interference of complex backgrounds in remote sensing images on the model, enabling the model to focus on the feature extraction of the desired targets. Finally, the coupled detection head (Coupled Head) of the model is replaced with a decoupled detection head (Decoupled Head), allowing the classification and regression tasks to output from different branches to achieve decoupling and avoid the decrease in detection accuracy caused by conflicts between classification and regression. The experimental results of this method on the public dataset DIOR achieved 88.73% accuracy, which is an improvement of 1.78% compared to the unimproved method's accuracy of 86.95%. Furthermore, compared to other researchers' methods tested on DIOR, the proposed method also shows improvement, thus validating its effectiveness.

image segmentation in 3D confocal fluorescence microscopy images is a common problem in many biomedical studies. Deep learning-based methods have achieved great success on such tasks. In the literature, manual 3D annotations are still commonly used for model training or performance evaluation. But, due to the nature of the lens-based optical instruments, diffraction of light always occurs, which can lead to obscure boundaries of the biomedical structures being imaged. For example, when analyzing nuclei from 3D fluorescence microscopy images of cells marked by DNA dyes, the exact boundaries are usually not clearly identifiable, especially along Z. This makes accurate segmentation, both manually and automatically, very challenging. For applications where the boundary accuracy is crucial, the downstream analyses can thus be significantly compromised. This problem can be addressed with special experimental-computational co-design to acquire the "biological ground truth". For the nuclei example, we can take cells expressing mEGFP tagged lamin B1, from which we can acquire both the DNA dye channel (nucleus) and the lamin B1 channel (nuclear envelope). Lamin B1 signals clearly mark the nuclei boundary and can thus serve as the real truth. We demonstrate that training a deep learning-based nuclei instance segmentation model with biological ground truth and manual annotations will result in significant differences in various metrics, such as volume or application-specific measurements. Also, we show the universalness of such issues with manual annotations by testing different state-of-the-art deep learning-based methods. We hope our work can raise within the biomedical image analysis community the awareness of (1) the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations, e.g., computational-experimental co-design for biological ground truth collection, and (2) potentially significant issues with manual annotation in training or evaluating deep learning-based segmentation models.
