The computational power of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems is constantly increasing, however, their input/output (IO) performance grows relatively slowly, and their storage capacity is also limited. This unbalance presents significant challenges for applications such as Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which generate massive amounts of data for further visualization or analysis. At the same time, checkpointing is crucial for long runs on HPC clusters, due to limited walltimes and/or failures of system components, and typically requires the storage of large amount of data. Thus, restricted IO performance and storage capacity can lead to bottlenecks for the performance of full application workflows (as compared to computational kernels without IO). In-situ techniques, where data is further processed while still in memory rather to write it out over the I/O subsystem, can help to tackle these problems. In contrast to traditional post-processing methods, in-situ techniques can reduce or avoid the need to write or read data via the IO subsystem. They offer a promising approach for applications aiming to leverage the full power of large scale HPC systems. In-situ techniques can also be applied to hybrid computational nodes on HPC systems consisting of graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs). On one node, the GPUs would have significant performance advantages over the CPUs. Therefore, current approaches for GPU-accelerated applications often focus on maximizing GPU usage, leaving CPUs underutilized. In-situ tasks using CPUs to perform data analysis or preprocess data concurrently to the running simulation, offer a possibility to improve this underutilization.

Gridded spatial datasets arise naturally in environmental, climatic, meteorological, and ecological settings. Each grid point encapsulates a vector of variables representing different measures of interest. Gridded datasets tend to be voluminous since they encapsulate observations for long timescales. Visualizing such datasets poses significant challenges stemming from the need to preserve interactivity, manage I/O overheads, and cope with data volumes. Here we present our methodology to significantly alleviate I/O requirements by leveraging deep neural network-based models and a distributed, in-memory cache to facilitate interactive visualizations. Our benchmarks demonstrate that deploying our lightweight models coupled with back-end caching and prefetching schemes can reduce the client's query response time by 92.3% while maintaining a high perceptual quality with a PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) of 38.7 dB.

Whales are an important part of the oceanic ecosystem. Although historic commercial whale hunting a.k.a. whaling has severely threatened whale populations, whale researchers are looking at historical whaling data to inform current whale status and future conservation efforts. To facilitate this, we worked with experts in aquatic and fishery sciences to create WhaleVis—an interactive dashboard for the commercial whaling dataset maintained by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). We characterize key analysis tasks among whale researchers for this database, most important of which is inferring spatial distribution of whale populations over time. In addition to facilitating analysis of whale catches based on the spatio-temporal attributes, we use whaling expedition details to plot the search routes of expeditions. We propose a model of the catch data as a graph, where nodes represent catch locations, and edges represent whaling expedition routes. This model facilitates visual estimation of whale search effort and in turn the spatial distribution of whale populations normalized by the search effort—a well known problem in fisheries research. It further opens up new avenues for graph analysis on the data, including more rigorous computation of spatial distribution of whales normalized by the search effort, and enabling new insight generation. We demonstrate the use of our dashboard through a real life use case.

The introduction of the digital twin technology created enormous potential for several industrial sectors to improve their operations. Accordingly, they can enhance their productivity, cost-effectiveness, reliability, quality, and flexibility. One important sector that can successfully benefit from this advanced technology is healthcare systems. This paper investigates how healthcare systems engineering can benefit from utilizing digital twins. Healthcare systems engineering applies the systems view of engineering analysis and design principles to enhance healthcare services. Digital twins can enable many advantages to improve the processes and outcomes of healthcare systems. This paper discusses how digital twins can be utilized for healthcare systems engineering. It also discusses the impact of this utilization on achieving the goals of healthcare systems engineering.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) has emerged as a promising technology for wearable personal healthcare due to its non-invasive and cost-effective nature. However, owing to the vulnerability to various noise, the useful PPG signals are few and the usability of PPG-based systems are limited. In this paper, we address the challenge of recovering extremely corrupted PPG waveforms with severe distortions, which lead to missing data. Specifically, we propose a novel diffusion-based framework that incorporates remaining values and subject-aware embedding, along with a self-supervised generative training strategy. Extensive experiments were performed on two datasets under three missing rates and two missing patterns. Our proposed model achieves significant improvements of nearly 100% over existing imputation models on quantitative metrics, and together with the visualization, demonstrating its effectiveness for data distribution generation and corrupted PPG restoration. Our proposed method also provides a new perspective for PPG denoising.

For the best predictive results of novel coronavirus infection and COVID-19 mortality, this research bases on the XGBoost machine learning algorithm. Through the research of data on related diseases, it not only helps to prevent the infection of COVID-19 effectively, but also gives advice to specific patients who need treatment without delay. The existing machine learning model uses the logistic regression algorithm to train the uneven data but gets an unsatisfying precision. This research improves the result by combining undersampling with XGBoost, with random forest, logistic regression, decision tree, and other models as comparisons. The prediction of COVID-19 mortality has the same accuracy of 91% before and after using the undersampling method, however, the AUC rises about 13% and finally reaches 92%• This research is available for the prediction of prevalence rate and death rate of COVID-19 in people who have basic diseases.

Graphic design is the main content of fractal art, but in graphic design, the amount of visual information and design means will affect the optimization results, reduce the accuracy of graphic design, and make the design optimization results unsatisfactory. Based on this, this paper proposes a Newtonian iterative algorithm to carry out graphic design on graphic data, improve the level of fractal art, and shorten the graphic design time. The graphical data is then comprehensively designed. Finally, the rule analysis produces artistic graphic design and outputs the final design optimization results. The research and optimization results show that Newton's iterative algorithm can accurately carry out graphic design and improve the level of graphic design, and the accuracy of graphic design is greater than 95%, which is better than the manual design method. Therefore, Newton's iterative algorithm can meet the optimization requirements of graphic design and is suitable for iterative analysis of fractal art.

In the aviation space, maintenance is the main driver in the push for Internet of Things (loT) device management systems, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) re-search, and cloud infrastructure. The potential for this approach to reduce downtime, maximize component lifetime, re-duce man-hours on diagnosis and repair, and optimize supply chains and scheduling has driven massive investments across the industry. And yet, the challenges in delivering on these promises with the available data and technology should also not be minimized. To reach its full potential, maintenance program implementers must understand what predictions can be derived from the available data, what maintenance actions may be driven by those predictions, and how the predictions should be presented to the appropriate decision makers in ground operations and the logistics chain. This report examines the current state of data within the aviation maintenance space, variations in component level coverage, and how that translates to the type, volume, and timeliness of data and computational infrastructure necessary to provide right time predictions and analytics to maintainers, supply chain managers, and operators. This report also addresses some of the specific challenges in the aviation space with respect to data availability, equipment variability, use variability, and maintenance action coding that can affect the ability of operators to derive value from a data science program.

Compared with object-level and human-level point clouds, LiDAR point clouds have larger data scales and are more sparse, posing a challenge for the existing learning-based lossy compression scheme. In this paper, we resolve this issue by transforming the point cloud into a cylindrical coordinate system. In this way, we can better retain points close to the sensor with a high density while extending the receptive field of convolution in areas of low point density. Following cylindrical quantization, an autoencoder is utilized to progressively downsample voxels. The coordinates and latent features are compressed by G-PCC and hyperprior-based entropy encoding respectively. The results demonstrate that our approach performs better than PCGCv2. The visualization results also show that our algorithm can better retain the shape of objects. Ablation studies further prove the efficiency of the cylindrical coordinates. Multi-needle radioactive seed implantation is a scientific and effective minimally invasive technique for tumor treatment. Because of the difficulties in planning, low accuracy of puncture operation and non-standard system, it can not be widely used. In this work, a virtual reality based multi-needle particle implantation surgery planning system is developed to help doctors conduct surgical training and planning, and three-dimensional surgical guide model is constructed to assist doctors in positioning in real surgery. The results show that this work can effectively solve the problems of “unclear insertion” and “inaccurate insertion” in clinical multi-needle particle implantation.
