Smart manufacturing was given unparalleled chances by data-driven approaches, speeding up the shift to Industry 4.0 ways of production. Machine learning and deep learning are indispensable in the creation of smart systems that could perform descriptive, analytical, and predictive analytics for monitoring the health of manufacturing processes and equipment. This study discusses the advantages and disadvantages of applying deep learning (DL) to intelligent machining and tool maintenance. The building blocks of a smart monitoring system are unveiled. The primary benefits and drawbacks of ML models are described, and they are contrasted to those of deep learning models. Deep belief networks, Auto-Encoder, recurrent neural network (RNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), were some of the most prominent DL models covered, their applications in smart manufacturing and tool health monitoring were also examined. Intelligent machining could benefit from a data-driven smart manufacturing strategy in six ways: (1) by providing hybrid intelligent models;(2) by managing high-dimensional data;(3) by dealing with big data;(4) by achieving optimal sensor fusion;(5) by avoiding sensor redundancy;and (6) by automating feature engineering. Finally, the data-driven challenges and research needs in smart manufacturing were discussed. There were many obstacles, such as those related to process uncertainty, data nature, data size, and model selection. © 2023 IEEE.

Despite the availability of computer-aided simulators and recorded videos of surgical procedures, junior residents still heavily rely on experts to answer their queries. However, expert surgeons are often overloaded with clinical and academic workloads and limit their time in answering. For this purpose, we develop a surgical question-answering system to facilitate robot-assisted surgical scene and activity understanding from recorded videos. Most of the existing visual question answering (VQA) methods require an object detector and regions based feature extractor to extract visual features and fuse them with the embedded text of the question for answer generation. However, (i) surgical object detection model is scarce due to smaller datasets and lack of bounding box annotation;(ii) current fusion strategy of heterogeneous modalities like text and image is naive;(iii) the localized answering is missing, which is crucial in complex surgical scenarios. In this paper, we propose Visual Question Localized-Answering in Robotic Surgery (Surgical-VQLA) to localize the specific surgical area during the answer prediction. To deal with the fusion of the heterogeneous modalities, we design gated vision-language embedding (GVLE) to build input patches for the Language vision Transformer (LViT) to predict the answer. To get localization, we add the detection head in parallel with the prediction head of the LViT. We also integrate generalized intersection over union (GIoU) loss to boost localization performance by preserving the accuracy of the question-answering model. We annotate two datasets of VQLA by utilizing publicly available surgical videos from EndoVis-17 and 18 of the MICCAI challenges. Our validation results suggest that Surgical-VQLA can better understand the surgical scene and localized the specific area related to the question-answering. GVLE presents an efficient language-vision embedding technique by showing superior performance over the existing benchmarks.

We present a full-stack autonomous navigation system for a reconfigurable tracked robot in man-built environments, especially targeting the safe traversing in stairways. This system first uses A∗ algorithm to plan an initial path across the floor on a grid map. Then the staircase detection algorithm will continuously look for the staircase features from the environment. Once the staircase is detected, our motion strategy completes the staircase traversing, otherwise a follower based on dynamic window approach is used to follow this path. Finally, the low-level controller drives the motor to rotate to complete the cross-floor navigation task. Our method has been validated experimentally on a reconfigurable tracked robot. Compared to manual control by experienced professional operators, our approach enables the robot to complete the cross-floor traversing task more stably, smoothly and safely. Overall, this work combines the advantages of different algorithms in cross-floor navigation, improves the stability and adaptability of robots in different environments and provides important experience for future research. © 2024 IEEE.

The research and application of therapeutic robotics for children have gained significant attention. This study introduces a system for emotion recognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children that utilizes infrared thermal imaging cameras to capture the frontal facial images. The paper focuses on the development to automate, recognize and track the subjects frontal face using the Shape-Adapted Mean Shift algorithm (SAMShift) applied to thermal images. This system targets the identification of affective states in ASD children and employs non-invasive thermal imaging instead of invasive sensor patches. By integrating tracking and affective state analysis within a single modality, the system addresses the limitations of traditional visual-based systems, which often suffer from invasiveness due to the use of sensor patches, difficulty in automating and tracking facial features, and challenges in accurately identifying affective states. The SAMShift algorithm, implemented in the LabVIEW® vision module environment, is utilized for tracking the frontal face image. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving an average accuracy of 89.20% and an average precision of 95.40%. This research contributes to advancing the field of therapeutic robotics for children with ASD by providing an automated, non-invasive, and accurate approach to emotion recognition. © 2023 IEEE.

The special rim assembly is an important part of the intelligent tire development platform. Due to the complexity of the design and assembly process, it is difficult to directly measure the dynamic balance of the special rim assembly during actual operation through contact sensors. To address this problem, this paper proposes a vision-based vibration measurement method for the special rim assembly, which accurately and efficiently extracts the motion of the target at the stator end of the slip ring through an improved two-step upsampling phase correlation matching algorithm, and indirectly evaluates the dynamic balance status of the special rim assembly based on the motion signal. Experiments under displacement platform testing experiment and variable load conditions on the Flat-Trac bench show that the visual measurement method proposed in this paper can accurately acquire the motion of the target position in the image plane, and realizes the purpose of quickly and accurately evaluating the dynamic balance of the special rim assembly. © 2023 IEEE.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems have been developed successfully to recognize printed characters. Serial number logging by hand is a time-consuming and tedious task in many industries. The distinct engine and chassis numbers that are inscribed on machinery-like vehicles are an example of such an application. The study explains how engine and chassis numbers inscribed on two and four-wheeled vehicles can be read using computer vision and optical character recognition. The proposed system is reliable in dimly lit areas, and the environmental parameters are adjusted to optimize output efficiency, especially in poorly illuminated surroundings. Over twenty-eight photos of automobile engines, with various levels of ambient lighting are used to test the system. The engine number was kept in focus as these pictures were being taken, and a grid attached to the camera's experimental configuration was used to maintain a steady angle of view and distance from the vehicle. Pre-processing of these photos was done using various common image processing algorithms. The proposed OCR system is then fed to the enhanced resulting images. The system is effective overall and is used in real-time applications. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we analyze the numerical characteristics of stopping spacing and starting interval of vehicles at signal intersections, explore the relationship between forward vision and stopping spacing and starting interval, and analyze the impact of vehicles on road traffic under different stopping spacing conditions by simulation software. Firstly, the numerical characteristics of stopping spacing and starting interval are analyzed based on the data collected in the field;then, the correlation effect of vehicle type on stopping spacing and starting interval and its distribution characteristics are verified;finally, the motion process of vehicles stopping and starting at different stopping spacing is simulated in vissim simulation software to analyze the influence of different stopping spacing on road traffic. The results of the statistical analysis of the data showed that the differences in vehicle forward vision due to different vehicle types had a significant effect on the stopping spacing, while it did not have a significant effect on the start interval time;the simulation results show that as the stopping spacing decreases, the traffic capacity and average speed increases, while the delay and travel time decrease. © 2024 SPIE.

Deploying humans in a high-risk environment to extract casualties in order to provide medical attention is an inherently dangerous endeavor. To minimize this risk, robotics and Autonomous Systems can be deployed in hazardous areas in place of human personnel to limit the exposure of first responders to various life-threatening conditions. The success of robotic extraction of injured persons depends heavily on how safely the human subject is handled. Therefore, the integration of intelligent technologies for secure control and motion planning is crucial in overcoming the dynamic and complex challenges of robotic grasping and manipulation. In this regard, the measurement of the target human subject's weight is an essential factor for safe grasping and maneuvering during robotic interactions with humans. This paper presents a contactless vision-based approach for estimating the weight of the human body. This approach employs visual body perception, 3D body point cloud representation, and a deep learning network for body segmentation to measure specific body parameters. Next, the body parameters are fed into a neural network model to predict the total body weight. This prediction then enables an approximation of the weight of individual body segments to be obtained.

Automatic production is closely linked with industrial robots. However, the precision of robot positioning significantly impacts the stability of the automation system. To address this issue, we establish an industrial automation system comprising an industrial camera, visual processing software, controller, and industrial robot to enable robot self-compensation. The system's visual detection module, comprising visual processing software and an industrial camera, detects offsets and compensates for errors in the industrial robot. This facilitates self-inspection and self-correction of robot grasping errors, enhancing the operational stability of the automatic production *** experimental results show that this method has strong practicability. Compared with the system without self-compensation, the steady-state error is reduced by 0.01 mm in 1000 times of repeated grabbing, which improves the stability of automatic production and has high popularization and application value. © 2024 SPIE.

Despite the rapid development in robotics, the use of mobile robots in everyday life is currently not yet widespread. The complicated programming interface of mobile robots is often an obstacle to use for people who are not technically proficient. To this end, we present a novel method for teach-and-repeat of mobile robots by Ultra-Wideband (UWB) based human following. This approach has the following two advantages. First, the human following using UWB releases capacities for parallel activities during the teach-in process. Second, the programming of the robot path is conducted directly on the robot hardware using a self-developed UWB-based handset, which reduces setup time. Real-world experiments are conducted using our in-house developed mobile robot platform, the "Carrier Bot", whose hardware design has been specially selected to facilitate ease of use for indoor teach-in programming. Experiments show that the proposed system can reach a repeatability of 0.05 m of at least 12 meters path. © 2023 IEEE.
