We explore the interplay between automation and human involvement in data science. Emerging from in-depth discussions at a Dagstuhl seminar, we synthesize perspectives from Automated data science (AutoDS) and Interactive data visualization (VIS) - two fields that traditionally represent opposing ends of the human-machine spectrum. While AutoDS seeks to enhance efficiency through increasing automation, VIS underscores the critical value of human involvement in providing nuanced understanding, creativity, innovation, and contextual relevance. We explore these dichotomies through an online survey and advocate for a balanced approach that harmonizes the speed and consistency of effective automation with the indispensable insights of human expertise and thought. Ultimately, we confront the essential question: what aspects of data science should we automate?

This position paper discusses the profound impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) on semantic change, emphasizing the need for comprehensive monitoring and visualization techniques. Building on linguistic concepts, we examine the interdependency between mental and language models, highlighting how LLMs and human cognition mutually influence each other within societal contexts. We introduce three primary theories to conceptualize such influences: (T1) Recontextualization, (T2) Standardization, and (T3) Semantic Dementia, illustrating how LLMs drive, standardize, and potentially degrade language semantics. Our subsequent review categorizes methods for visualizing semantic change into frequency-based, embedding-based, and context-based techniques, being first in assessing their effectiveness in capturing linguistic evolution: Embedding-based methods are highlighted as crucial for a detailed semantic analysis, reflecting both broad trends and specific linguistic changes. We underscore the need for novel visualization tools to explain LLM-induced semantic changes, ensuring the preservation of linguistic diversity and mitigating biases, while providing essential insights for the research on semantic change visualization and the dynamic nature of language evolution in the times of LLMs.

Categorical data does not have an intrinsic definition of distance or order, and therefore, established visualization techniques for categorical data only allow for a set-based or frequency-based analysis, e.g., through Euler diagrams or Parallel Sets, and do not support a similarity-based analysis. We present a novel dimensionality reduction-based visualization for categorical data, which is based on defining the distance of two data items as the number of varying attributes. Our technique enables users to pre-attentively detect groups of similar data items and observe the properties of the projection, such as attributes strongly influencing the embedding. Our prototype visually encodes data properties in an enhanced scatterplot-like visualization, visualizing attributes in the background to show the distribution of categories. In addition, we propose two graph-based measures to quantify the plot's visual quality, which rank attributes according to their contribution to cluster cohesion. To demonstrate the capabilities of our similarity-based projection method, we compare it to Euler diagrams and Parallel Sets regarding visual scalability and evaluate it quantitatively on seven real-world datasets using a range of common quality measures. Further, we validate the benefits of our approach through an expert study with five data scientists analyzing the Titanic and Mushroom dataset with up to 23 attributes and 8124 category combinations. Our results indicate that our Categorical data Map offers an effective analysis method for large datasets with a high number of category combinations.

Smart cities can generate a lot of useful data for analyzing behavior and infrastructures, helping with urban planning. However, the applications found are often limited to desktop viewing only, which can hinder or restrict data analysis. This work proposes an immersive data visualization of the population of medical centers to assist in the analysis and development of new strategies to deal with overcrowding situations. The prototype allows the visualization of crowd data located in places of interest on top of a 3D map. The user can view the number of people present at the location at the current stage of the simulation or over time. To test the prototype, data from an infectious disease simulator was used, called LODUS. The results showed that the application has potential for visualizing this type of data.

data visualization plays an increasingly important role in sports analysis. With the advancement of technology and the continuous increase of data, its role and evolution have shown various characteristics. This paper is based on the Web of science TM core collection data and uses bibliometric visualization software, Citesapce, and Vosviewer to visually analyze the annual publication volume, authors, countries/regions, disciplines, and keywords of international sports research. The results indicate that sports research is gradually heating up internationally;The distribution of sports research disciplines is very extensive, with a large number of literature on sports science, environmental science and ecology, public health, environment and occupational health;The introduction of data visualization technology makes massive amounts of data easier to understand and utilize, providing athletes and coaches with more comprehensive analysis tools. In the future, with the continuous development of technology, we can expect more innovative applications of data visualization in the field of sports, promoting the progress of sports science and improving the level of sports performance. © 2024 ACM.

Zinc dry electrodes were fabricated and investigated for wearable electrophysiology recording. Results from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electromyography functionality testing show that zinc electrodes are suitable for use in electrophysiology. Two electrode configurations were tested: a standard disc and a custom tripolar concentric ring configuration. However, no functional benefit was observed with the tripolar concentric ring electrodes as compared to the disc electrodes. © 2024 IEEE.

data visualization is the practice of turning data into graphics and the usual goal is to communicate an interpretation of a dataset to a specific audience, to make an argument you have worked out from an analysis of the data or a sub-set of the data. It is an essential part of science and engineering communication [6,7]. A course that has been taught for the past 5 years in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary added one more step in the data visualization process: data physicalization. Art and engineering is a course that focuses on history, concepts, contemporary issues, and techniques of engineering in art. Topics include Arithmetic and Geometry, Proportion, Formalism, Symmetry, Computation, Geometric Abstraction, and Mathematics as they relate to engineering and art. Woven into the theoretical content are hands-on projects where students learn basic sketching skills, hand build a ceramic still-life piece, visit local galleries and museums, and, using elements or art and principles of design, turn data into data visualizations and data physicalizations: data-driven physical artefacts whose geometry or material properties encode data. Students use an adapted Jansen and Dragicevic [1] information visualization pipeline to move from raw data to data wrangling to visual and physical presentation. This paper presents examples of the process and concludes with observations and lessons learned. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2024.

This paper explores the space of optimizing feedback mechanisms in complex domains such as data science, by combining two prevailing approaches: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learnersourcing. Towards addressing the challenges posed by each approach, this work compares traditional learnersourcing with an AI-supported approach. We report on the results of a randomized controlled experiment conducted with 72 Master's level students in a data visualization course, comparing two conditions: students writing hints independently versus revising hints generated by GPT-4. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of learnersourced hints, examine the impact of student performance on hint quality, gauge learner preference for writing hints with versus without AI support, and explore the potential of the student-AI collaborative exercise in fostering critical thinking about LLMs. Based on our findings, we provide insights for designing learnersourcing activities leveraging AI support and optimizing students' learning as they interact with LLMs.

In order to carry out the intelligent production of typical chemical products for the application of order-based flexible production system, based on intelligent measurement and control technology, a new generation of information technology such as industrial Internet, intelligent management and control, data visualization, and informatization is integrated. In this paper, we study the establishment of an order-based flexible production process with definable configuration according to the intelligent processing mode of process automation. After selecting the sensor reasonably, Configuration of the industrial intelligent detection system, System signal processing and digitalization, Industrial information network construction and debugging, Programming operation and debugging of intelligent measurement and control systems, Production tasks such as visualization and remote monitoring of the production process. The study found,The sensor plays a vital role in the control system control of the DCS -based controller, Liquid level sensors and flow/weight sensors and other key sensors can monitor various parameters in the production process in real time, provide accurate data support for the control system to ensure the accuracy and stability of the ingredient system. And realize the flexible ingredients controlled by program control, and then make the feeding at the same time to improve production efficiency. This research provides a strong technical guarantee for actual production, and provides a feasible implementation method for our intelligent manufacturing process industrial control.

This research work investigates the classification of 1901-2017 Indian subdivision rainfall data utilizing the Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Decision Trees machine learning algorithms. The goal is to assess and compare the algorithms' abilities to forecast and categorize rainfall patterns. The dataset includes rainfall information for each month for a complete year. We assess each algorithm's accuracy, efficiency, and interpretability. The findings will provide important information on their relevance for rainfall forecast in India. The study incorporates data visualization to aid understanding of classification results and their consequences for regional weather and agriculture. This research helps to construct more accurate rainfall forecast models, which will aid agriculture, the management of water resources, and disaster mitigation in India, © 2024 IEEE.
