Large number of sensors are running in the high performance computer (HPC, supercomputer) environment to detect the hardware and software resource utilization during the jobs execution. Different state variables of the HPC system are detected by physical sensors but virtual sensors are producing important event information, as well. By measuring sensor data of different processes huge amount of state information is collected from the supercomputer during the execution time. Each of the time series collected in this way have special meaning and characterize the utilization of a given HPC resource subset. Having dozens of time series collected in parallel for each of the 128 computation nodes, complex event processing (CSP) methods are needed to evaluate the jobs execution efficiency. This paper gives a complex overview of a resource utilization analysis of 18 TFLOPS capacity HPC system with 1.5 thousand CPU cores. Advanced method is presented based on neural networks for defining clusters of the strongly correlated variables with 55 thousand samples each. Selection procedure of the representing variable needed for each cluster. Method based on statistical analysis is proposed to evaluate jobs execution efficiency by the HPC system.

In this work we describe a cognitive model to infer the more likely user's states in data-intensive contexts. Stress, mental fatigue, or even inaptitude, are selected to be inferred by the model based two sources of information: context and psychophysiological sensors network. As long as a complex, high demanding context will predict those cognitive states that, in turn, will be diagnosed by the set of sensors (EEG and ECG). All these input variables are represented in a probabilistic model in which links are defined based on the literature. The outcome of the model is a probability of being inapt to perform in a suitable way. In case of inaptitude, assistance should be delivered to the user to normalize the current user's state.

Decision-making tasks that are based on perception have been performed routinely by human beings in daily life and decision-makers in daily work. It has been observed that the combination of two perception-based decisions could be better than one, provided that the decision-makers communicate with each other and jointly adopt the most confident judgment;simply select the most confident judgment without any dyadic interaction, or communicate with each other on shareable arguments based on reasoning. In this paper, we report a recently conducted visual perception experiment with decisions from nineteen pairs of subjects and their reported confidence factors when making such a decision. Utilizing the concept of a "cognitive diversity" between two systems and the combinatorial fusion algorithm, our results demonstrated that the fusion of two visual perception decision systems can be better than each of the individual systems only if the two systems perform relatively good and they are cognitively diverse. Our study not only provides a robust algorithm to fuse two visual perception decision-making systems, but also suggests a resilient approach to use the cognitive diversity in fusion when the performance of each individual system is not known or cannot be obtained, which is often the case for complex problems.

Despite their relatively low sampling factor, the freely available, randomly sampled status streams of Twitter are very useful sources of geographically embedded social network data. To statistically analyze the information Twitter provides via these streams, we have collected a year's worth of data and built a multi-terabyte relational database from it. The database is designed for fast data loading and to support a wide range of studies focusing on the statistics and geographic features of social networks, as well as on the linguistic analysis of tweets. In this paper we present the method of data collection, the database design, the data loading procedure and special treatment of geo-tagged and multi-lingual data. We also provide some SQL recipes for computing network statistics. © 2013 ieee.

There is an increasing demand for applications that can detect changes in human affect or behavior especially in the fields of health care and crime detection. Detection of changes in continuous human affect dimensions from multimedia data precedes the exact prediction of an emotion as a continuum. With the growth in the dimensions of emotion space there is a need to discover latent descriptors (topics) that can explain these complex states. Considering that at every time step the audio/video frames constitute a set of such latent topics, the presence and absence of changes in emotion should effect the topics in those frames. Based on this assumption an Adaptive Temporal Topic model (ATTM) based change detection algorithm is presented that, at each time step, detects whether a significant change in human affect has occurred. ATTM is a probabilistic topic model that extends Latent Dirichlet Allocation model by incorporating the temporal dependencies between human audio/video `documents' and generates refined topics. The topics assigned to a document by ATTM are adapted to the presence or absence of a change in the affect dimension at that time step. ATTM along with different regression models has been tested on the multimodal Audio Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC 2012) data and has shown promising results in comparison to existing temporal and non-temporal topic models.

Recent work has demonstrated the effectiveness of using complex networks for studying complex biological interactions. The process often involves conversion of biological data such as gene expressions or biochemical interactions into one of numerous complex network file formats. However, the exact selection of an appropriate file format for a particular dataset often poses a non-trivial decision problem;biologists are non-specialist end-users and find it difficult to select a particular format for data storage and conversion. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem of the selection of a suitable network format by means of a critical evaluation based on performance analysis of empirical experiments on biological data sets of different sizes. Experimental results substantiate the hypothesis of being extra careful in the selection of a suitable complex network format based primarily on the size of the biological dataset.

Learning and reproducing complex movements is an important skill for robots. However, while humans can learn and generalise new complex trajectories, robots are often programmed to execute point-by-point precise but fixed patterns. This study proposes a method for decomposing new complex trajectories into a set of known robot-based primitives. Instead of reproducing accurately an observed trajectory, the robot interprets it as a composition of its own previously acquired primitive movements. The method attempts initially a rough approximation with the idea of capturing the most essential features of the movement. Observing the discrepancy between the demonstrated and reproduced trajectories, the process then proceeds with incremental decompositions. The method is tested on both geometric and human generated trajectories. The shift from a data-centred view to an agent-centred view in learning trajectories results in generalisation properties like the abstraction to primitives and noise suppression. This study suggests a novel approach to learning complex robot motor patterns that builds upon existing motor skills. Applications include drawing, writing, movement generation and object manipulation in a variety of tasks.
