A multi-modal immune algorithm is utilized for finding optimal solutions to job-shop scheduling problem emulating the features of a biological immune system. Inter-relation ships within the algorithm resemble antibody molecule structure, antibody-antigen relationships in terms of specificity, clonal proliferation, germinal center, and the memory characteristics of adaptive immune responses. In addition, Gene fragment recombination and several antibody diversification schemes were incorporated into the algorithm in order to improve the balance between exploitation and exploration. Moreover, niche scheme is employed to discover multi-modal solutions. Numerous well-studied benchmark examples were utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Functional knowledge exchange within an intelligent distributed system

Humans learn from other humans - and intelligent nodes of a distributed system operating in a dynamic environment (e.g., robots, smart sensors, or software agents) should do the same! Humans do not only learn by communicating facts but also by exchanging rules. the latter can be seen as a more generic, abstract kind of knowledge. We refer to these two kinds of knowledge as "descriptive" and "functional" knowledge, respectively. In a dynamic environment, where new knowledge arises or old knowledge becomes obsolete, intelligent nodes must adapt on-line to their local environment by means of self-learning mechanisms. If they exchange functional knowledge in addition to descriptive knowledge, they will efficiently be enabled to cope with a particular phenomenon before they observe this phenomenon in their local environment, for instance. In this article, we present an architecture of so-called organic nodes that face a classification problem. We show how a need for new functional knowledge is detected, how new rules are determined, and how the exchange of locally acquired rules within a network of organic nodes leads to a certain kind of self-optimization of the overall system. We show the potential of our methods using an artificial scenario and a real-world scenario from the field of intrusion detection in computer networks.

In this paper, we propose a library for the system level modeling and simulation of dynamically reconfigurable architectures (DRAs). Using the proposed library, the designer can model the system specifications including modules for the dynamic generation and elimination that are needed in the design of dynamically reconfigurable systems. In addition, we evaluate the proposed library by the modeling and simulation of sample circuits, such as multi-context DRA and partially DRA. Using the proposed library, we can model the system specifications as much the same amount as a detailed description, such as one using multiplexers and de-multiplexers, which is a modeling formula for describing multi-context DRA. Under some conditions, higher-speed simulation is possible using the proposed library

the precision and power consumption of pipelined FFT processors are highly affected by the wordlengths in fixed-point application systems. Due to nonconvex space, wordlength optimization under multiple competing objectives is a complex, time-consuming task. this paper proposes a new approach to solving the multi-objective evolutionary optimization design of pipelined FFT processors for wireless OFDM receivers. In our new approach, the number of design variables can be significantly reduced. We also fully investigate how the internal wordlength configuration affects the precision and power consumption of the FFT by setting the wordlengths of input and FFT coefficients to be 12 and 16 bits in fixed-point number type. A new system-level model for representing power consumption of the pipelined FFT is also developed and utilized in this paper. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of applying the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm to the multi-objective evolutionary design of a 1024-point pipelined FFT processor for wireless OFDM receivers.

Wafer-level testing (wafer sort) is used in the semiconductor industry to reduce packaging and test cost. However, a large number of wafer probe contacts lead to higher yield loss. therefore, it is desirable that the number of chip pins contacted by tester channels during wafer sort be kept small to reduce the yield loss resulting from improper contacts. Since test time and the number of contacted chip pins are major practical constraints for wafer sort, not all scan-based digital tests can be applied to the die-under-test. We propose an optimization framework that addresses test access mechanism (TAM) optimization and test-length selection for wafer-level testing of core-based digital SoCs. the objective here is to design TAM architecture and determine test-lengths for the embedded cores such that the overall SoC defect screening probability at wafer sort is maximized. Defect probabilities for the embedded cores, obtained using statistical yield modeling, are incorporated in the optimization framework. Simulation results are presented for five of the ITC'02 SoC Test benchmarks

In this paper, we present an approach for simultaneous scheduling and placement of communicating modules for SoC architectures including devices with partial reconfiguration support and at least one CPU. this approach includes (a) a detailed modeling of the communication of modules and an optimization model for finding the best temporal and spatial placement of modules on either CPU or on the reconfigurable device including communication and reconfiguration time overheads, (b) a real SoC platform for slotübased module relocation and onüchip interümodule communication called Erlangen SlotMachine (ESM), and (c) real experimental data based on experiments on this machine. Existing approaches either neglect interümodule communication, are not able to solve the related problem, or do not provide real applications implemented on real platforms.

Sensor Resource Management (or process refinement) is a element of any information fusion system. Common Level 4 sensor management (SM) inter-relations to Level 1 target tracking and identification have been developed in the literature. During Fusion06, a panel discussion was held to explore the challenges and issues pertaining to the interaction between SM and situation and threat assessment. this paper summarizes the key tenants of the discussion to filter vast experiences of the invited panel experts. the common themes were: (1) Addressing the user in system management / control, (2) Determining a standard set of metrics for optimization, (3) Optimizing / evaluating fusion systems to deliver timely information needs, (4) Dynamic updating for planning mission time-horizons, (5) Joint optimization of objective functions at all levels (6) L2/3 situation entity definitions for knowledge discovery, modeling, and information projection (7) Addressing constraints for resource planning and scheduling.

this paper describes the design, validation and integration of JouleQuest: a comprehensive power estimation framework for the StarCore DSP platform. the goal of this work is to provide a power model coupled to a fast platform simulator, that can accurately predict the power variability on the platform. the power consumption model for the DSP core is an instruction level model while the power models for the peripheral components are based on functional operations executed by the blocks. the DSP core instruction level power model is a generic model applicable to any VLIW DSP core and improves on existing VLIW models by reducing the model complexity to O(n) where n is the number of processor instructions. the peripheral power models are based on a novel technique of characterizing the power of operations and operation sequences executed on the peripheral block. this allows accurate power modeling for complex peripheral blocks like cache controllers, arbiters etc. having significant parallel operation execution. the platform power has been verified to give an average error of approximately 5% across a large suite of DSP and control benchmarks having high power variability. the paper concludes with a case study demonstrating the usage of the power simulator for energy optimization of ITU-T G.729 speech-codec software

Ontogenetic hardware, along with epigenetic (neural) hardware and phylogenetic (evolvable) hardware, are the key representatives of a new hardware conception paradigm known as bioüinspired hardware. Ontogenesis is the process that allows living beings to develop by means of mechanisms as growing, selfüreplication, and selfürepair. During the last few years, such ontogenetic mechanisms have been presented as a solution for the design of complex electronic circuits, with the goal of coping with the increasing complexity envisioned for future nanoütechnology devices. this paper presents an ontogenetic mechanism that allows a system, implemented in a reconfigurable device, to selfüreplicate, generating an identical copy of itself, by partially selfüreconfiguring the device containing it in a dynamic way.
