An increasing number of database applications have emerged for which efficient and effective support for similarity search is substantial. Particularly, the task of finding similar shapes in 2D and 3D becomes more and more important. Examples for new applications that require the retrieval of similar 3D objects include databases for molecular biology, medical imaging and computer aided design. Hierarchical clustering was shown to be effective for evaluating similarity models. Furthermore, visually analyzing cluster hierarchies helps the user, e.g. an engineer, to find and group similar objects. We present an interactive browsing tool called BOSS (browsing OPTICS-plots for similarity search), which utilizes solid automatic cluster recognition and extraction of meaningful cluster representatives in order to provide the user with significant and quick information.

Mobile ad hoc network routing protocols are highly susceptible to subversion. Previous research in securing these protocols has typically used techniques based on encryption and redundant transmission. these techniques prevent a range of attacks against routing protocols but are expensive to deploy on energy-constrained wireless devices. Experience in securing wired networks has demonstrated that, in addition to intrusion prevention techniques, it is useful to deploy intrusion detection techniques as a second line of defense. In this paper, we discuss some of the threats to wireless ad hoc networks, and, specifically, some attacks against the AODV routing protocol. We also present a tool aimed at real-time detection of these attacks. the tool monitors network packets to detect local and distributed attacks within its radio range. Experiments show that the tool provides effective intrusion detection functionality while using only a limited amount of resources.

the presented works are a part of the realization of an automobile accessibility movement simulator. the aim of this paper is to propose an optimization step of the kinematic model representing the human body. this model is made of two rigid bodies representing the trunk (torso and pelvis) and 4 simple open kinematics chains, in a star-shaped topology, with 7 degrees of freedom constituting the arms and the legs. the reconstruction of the joint angles is computed from the spatial trajectories measurement of some particular points of the body. the criterion optimization is the difference between the experimental and reconstructed trajectories of the end effectors. In results, the best body of reference is the torso and the position of the joint between the torso and the pelvis is located at 20% of the trunk length (roughly at the 10ththoracic vertebra)

In this paper the problem of minimum power multicasting in wireless networks with sectored antennas is considered. For omnidirectional antenna systems, a transmission from node i to node j will also reach all nodes which are closer to i than j. Depending on the network geometry, this strategy can be highly power efficient In ideal sectored antenna systems, however, this phenomenon is sector specific; i.e., only those nodes which are located in the same sector as j will receive the transmission implicitly. though this might seem an apparent disadvantage, the higher gains associated with directional antennas (as opposed to omni-directional antennas) allow for reduced transmission powers without sacrificing the signal-to-interference ratio at the receiver. In this paper, we first develop a mixed integer linear programming model for optimal solution of the minimum power multicast problem with sectored antennas. Subsequently, we discuss a biologically inspired algorithm for solving the problem to near-optimality at a very reasonable computation time. Experiments on randomly generated 10, 20 and 30-node networks indicate that near-optimal solutions can be obtained using the proposed algorithm.

Traditional models in multistage stochastic programming are directed to minimizing the expected value of random optimal costs arising in a multistage, non-anticipative decision process under uncertainty. Motivated by risk aversion, we consider minimization of the probability that the random optimal costs exceed some preselected threshold value. For the two-stage case, we analyse structural properties and propose algorithms both for models with integer decisions and for those without. optimization techniques are essential ingredients of reliability-oriented optimal designs of technical facilities. Although many technical aspects are not yet solved and the available spectrum of models and methods in structural reliability is still limited many practical problems can be solved. A special one-level optimization is proposed for general cost-benefit analysis and some technical aspects are discussed. However, focus is on some more critical issues, for example, "what is a reasonable replacement strategy for structural facilities?", "how safe is safe enough?" and "how to discount losses of material, opportunity and human lives?". An attempt has been made to give at least partial answers.
