Based on a verified mechanical model for a powertrain with automatic transmission, an approach for the optimization of gear shift operations in automatic transmissions is presented. the control data for the clutch pressure in the gear box and the engine load-reduction are used as optimization parameters. the objective of the optimization is to determine an optimal set of control data, so that the performance of the automatic transmission with respect to passengers comfort and gear shift duration is improved. For the description of the comfort, two optimization criteria are formulated. Furthermore, a third criterion is considered for the the evaluation of the gear shift duration. the nonlinear optimization problem is solved with a sequential quadratic programming algorithm. the results show a significant improvement in terms of the optimization criteria.

this paper considers the problem of detecting local linear substructures of a system in a high-dimensional data space by applying a fuzzy clustering technique. In this paper, we propose the linear fuzzy clustering method using eigenvalues of the fuzzy scatter matrix in the objective function for optimizing dimensional coefficients. the optimal solutions for the objective function and the illustrative examples are shown in this paper.

In this paper we propose a new design method for robust control configured systems with multiple design specifications. Because this design problem is formulated as the multi-objective minimax. optimization problem, we use the Genetic Algorithm (GA) base technique to obtain the optimal solution. this design method is based on the input deviation, the minimax design approach and pareto-partitioning GA. And we apply this design method for designing the 4WS(4 wheeled steering) car system. Some design examples are included to show the applicability and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Machinability is one of the important properties of a material. It is about cutting the material with maximum metal removal, in shortest time, with best surface finish while having maximum tool life. the high quality of surface finish is very important in order to face the required accuracy and marketing needs. In this paper we present a technique for modeling a machining process of Alumic-79 with 2 and 4-flutes cutting head. In this paper, optimum parameters, which are feed rate, spindle speed and depth of cut, are found for 2-flutes and 4-flutes cutting head to obtain a high quality surface finish.

We propose a new "Kansei" design method for building exterior by using decomposed fuzzy model and its inverse problem solution. Kansei of Human to CG image of building exterior is measured by SD technique. Decomposed fuzzy model is used to perform the human reactions. the model is divided into sub-models with single output variable. Input variables are common in these sub-models. In one sub-model, each input variable is fed into fuzzy inference unit separately, and the output signals of these fuzzy inference units are combined two by two, by combination unit. Parameters of the model are tuned by error back propagation algorithm using the date measured by SD technique. For a design of building exterior to satisfy a customer's Kansei request, inverse problem of the model is solved. Firstly, inverse problems for all sub-models are solved separately, under a constraint of noninferior property to the solution. these solutions are unifyed by taking intersection for all sub-models. In general, the unifyed solution is still a set of intervals, then the unique solution is required to draw a CG image of building exterior, and is obtained by numerical optimization method to satisfy the customer's requests as much as possible. Experimental result is resported, and the method is implemented into a WWW system using JAVA and CGI.

this work deals withthe design of control systems based on hybrid techniques of computational intelligence. Initially a neuro-fuzzy system is employed in the control of several plants. the neurofuzzy system used here is the NEFCON model, which is capable of learning and optimizing online the rule-base of a Mamdani-type fuzzy controller. the algorithm is based on reinforcement learning that uses a fuzzy measure for the error. Its performances in the control of linear plants of diverse complexity and also of a nonlinear one are evaluated. Results are compared to those obtained through conventional techniques. the main focus of this work is on the development of a new Neuro-Fuzzy-Genetic system. which makes use of Genetic Algorithms for rule base optimization. the satisfactory results obtained withthe two more complex plants show the potential of this hybrid model in the design of control systems.

the paper describes an automatically on-line tuned fuzzy navigation system for an autonomous robot using modular structure to generate the angular speed in function of the sensor data. the goal is to obtain a reactive behavior such as wall-following withthe adaptivity necessary for coping with large modifications in the physical characteristics of the robot. For this behavior, the building of the navigation controller is done entirely on-line by the optimization of a zero order Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference system (FIS) by a back-propagation-like algorithm. It is used to minimize a cost function that is made up of a quadratic error term and a weight decay term that prevents an excessive growth of parameters of the consequent part. the procedure is performed entirely on-line, but in two steps. the first one is done on a miniature robot or on its dedicated simulator. then the obtained controller is carried on the real robot and a further optimization step is performed. At the end of the procedure, it is possible to extract the knowledge by interpreting the result parameters in a symbolic form. One can notice that the two tables deduced on the miniature robot and on the real robot are very close with respect to the linguistic concepts. Moreover, these two automatically extracted tables of rules are quite close to those empirically written. But, we can observe that some human expertise rules work wrongly because the expert doesn't expect particular situation. In fact, the main advantage of this procedure is the optimization of the controller with respect to the actual characteristics of the robot. that means that for example the rough manual tuning of the global gains acting on the width of the universes of discourse is replaced by a fine local automatic tuning and this improves very significantly the performances. this method is simple, economical and safe since it is done on a miniature robot. It leads to a very quick and efficient optimization technique.
