We present a method for the detection of focal epileptic spikes in the EEG (electroencephalogram). the method is based on the dipole source localisation technique and provides a source location estimate for each detected spike. In the first section of the paper, a theoretical introduction is given about dipole source localisation, followed by a description of the modifications that were made to it for a more efficient calculation. An additional decision variable is introduced to exploit the high amplitude of the spikes that are searched for, without however imposing constraints on the precise shape of the waveforms. In the next section the efficiency of the method is discussed on the basis of an experiment with an EEG measurement from an epilepsy patient. It is shown that the method is capable of detecting and localising most of the epileptic spikes present in the EEG, while producing only few false-positive detections.

Stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve is commonly used in the measurement of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). To improve the efficiency of stimulation, the potential field and current density distributions under the surface electrodes were modeled and simulated. In our model, three layers were assumed: (1) the air environment, (2) electrode and paste (3) human body (skin and soft tissues). the mirror method was used to analyze the potential field of point charge. Integration of the field and the area of the stimulus gave the potential field of one surface electric pole. the potential field distribution of the bipolar stimulator was obtained by superimposition of two unipolar fields. Finally, the current density distribution was calculated by Laplace equation. the analytical solution of the potential field was found and the numerical solution of the current density distribution calculated. the potential field and current density distributions were simulated by 2-D plot. From the model and simulation, the potential and current density distributions were not found to be uniform under transcutaneous stimulation electrode and the maximum current density is located under the poles. We recommend that bipolar stimulator should be applied axially along the stimulated nerve course.

Based on findings from the authors' recent study which showed histologically an earlier tendon to articular cartilage structure incorporation than tendon to bone (BT) in a partial patellectomy model, the authors conducted a pilot study to explore the biological potential of using autologous cartilage as interpositional materials to reestablish a fibrocartilage BT junction zone and to accelerate the BT junction repair. Rabbits were used as experimental model and autologous fibrocartilage (autologous meniscus) and hyaline cartilage (articular cartilage) was used as interpositional materials for BT repair. Earlier and well incorporated BT interface was observed after using both fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage to repair the BT junction compared with a direct BT reattachment at 8th postoperative week, without degenerative changes. the interpositional cartilage resembled the matrix of the normal fibrocartilage zone of the BT junction by evaluating its matrix proteoglycans using Safranin O staining. However, long-term histological observation and testing mechanical properties of the repaired BT junction via autologous cartilage as the interpositional materials for BT junction repair needs further study.

A glucose and insulin simulator, AIDA on-line, was completed to fulfill a senior design project and is available for educational purposes through the World Wide Web (WWW). Designed to be accessible and usable by anyone who desires to learn more about diabetes, AIDA on-line is available through the Shodor Education Foundation at http://***/aida/. the code for the WWW version was written in Perl and relies heavily on previously completed work on the AIDA glucose-insulin simulator. AIDA on-line allows the user to make modifications in diet and insulin regimen for 40 different pre-programmed "patients" or to create a patient with custom-designed specifications. Multiple simulations can be run in order to compare the results of changes in diet and/or insulin regimen. the results of two different simulations can be displayed on the same graph.

this standard applies the CT (computerized tomography) method to measure the inertia parameters of Chinese adults. Male and female Chinese adults were chosen as samples to take computerized tomograms from, and 82 items of body-shape indexes were measured. the densities of 19 kinds of tissues and organs were also measured, and 16 items of human body segment parameters were obtained. In addition, the regression equations for the calculation of the inertia parameters of the human body were set up. Based on the data in the Database of Chinese Adults, the National Standard GB/T 17254-1988 ("Mass Center of Chinese Adults") has been prepared. Rubber dummies have been made in order to perform simulation experiments of human body movements. A new type of helmet was developed to improve the stress conditions of the neck, and a rational, simplified model of Chinese youths has been made. these achievements can be widely used in national defense, industry, sports, and many other fields.

An in vitro model was developed to characterise the electrical properties of silicon microfabricated recording electrodes, using a Cu-wire mimicing a neural signal source. Phosphorous doped electrodes were used to achieve an all silicon device. the model was used to study signal amplitude as a function of distance between the electrode surface and the signal source. Signal crosstalk to neighbouring electrodes on the chips were recorded. the crosstalk was found to be 6 dB using an external reference electrode. Improvements were accomplished with. An on chip reference electrode giving an amplitude crosstalk suppression of 20 dB. It was found that the amplitude decreased by a factor of 2 at a distance of 50 /spl mu/m between the electrode surface and the signal source. Sieve electrodes were also implanted in the rat sciatic nerve and following a 10 week nerve regeneration period the dorsal and ventral (L5) roots in the spinal cord were stimulated. Compound action potentials were recorded via the chip. Lower leg muscle contraction activity was also induced by stimulating the regenerated sciatic nerve via the sieve electrode.

Functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) can allow individuals with paraplegia to perform many activities that were previously difficult or impossible from the wheelchair. FNS of muscles of the lower extremities generate the muscle forces required to rise from a chair and assume a standing posture. Users of these standing neuroprostheses typically require substantial actions by the voluntary upper extremities to provide additional power for maintaining balance, largely eliminating the functional benefits of standing. As part of a larger effort to develop a neuroprosthesis for providing unassisted standing (i.e., without upper extremity interventions or significant external bracing), we have developed a three-dimensional, bilateral, closed-chain, dynamic model of the human lower extremities and pelvis. Simulations with this model will be used to study the effectiveness of various FNS control schemes prior to implementing any such systems in human subjects. In the current study, approaches for overcoming numerical simulation problems arising from the closed-chain nature of the model are presented. A simulation which combined a forward simulation of the model with a closed-loop feedback controller is also described. the encouraging results indicate that this model will be a valuable tool in the development of neuroprostheses for standing and mobility.

An operating model of a small electric power system grid has been developed. the power system generators are predominantly gas turbine-driven and the turbines and generators are all modeled according to the IEEE recommended models and in some cases, by models as given by various turbine manufacturers. the system model was then tested on a digital computer for various load changes. Using a developed personal computer-based data acquisition system, various operational load changes were made on the power system and the transient effect upon it was measured. these changes were then used as inputs into the computer model of the power system and its theoretical reaction was obtained. this was then compared with the measured reaction. Findings show that the theoretical and the actual results compared very favorably.

this paper presents a new general method for computing the different specific power system small-signal stability conditions. the conditions include the points of minimum and maximum damping of oscillations, saddle node and Hopf bifurcations and load flow feasibility boundaries. All these characteristic points are located by optimizing an eigenvalue objective function along the rays specified in the space of system parameters. the set of constraints consists of the load flow equations, and requirements applied to the dynamic state matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Solutions of the optimization problem correspond to specific points of interest mentioned above. So, the proposed general method gives a comprehensive characterization of the power system small signal stability properties. the specific point obtained depends upon the initial guess of variables and numerical methods used to solve the constrained optimization problem. the technique is tested by analyzing the small signal stability properties for well-known example systems.

Effective power transactions can reduce generation costs for a utility. Making good transaction decisions, however, is not an easy task since transactions are coupled with the scheduling of units through system demand and reserve requirements. the speed and quality of transaction decisions are nonetheless becoming critical to capture frequently emerging opportunities in the increasingly competitive power market. As transaction opportunities emerge, the known opportunities can be analyzed one at a time. When large number of such opportunities emerge one by one as time proceeds, this kind of analysis will however lay a huge burden on transaction analysts. A different framework is presented in this paper. While analyzing a known set of opportunities, the economic effects of further purchasing/selling fixed sizes of power blocks are also analyzed. Within the framework, the integrated scheduling and transaction problem is solved by using the Lagrangian relaxation method. Four transaction modes that optimize transaction level and/or duration are developed to deal with various transaction opportunities. A reference table is then established to help transaction analysts quickly deal with emerging opportunities. the algorithm can also be re-run periodically to update the reference table while solving another set of known transactions. Numerical testing results based on Northeast Utilities data sets show that results can be obtained in reasonable computational times to help transaction analysts make quick and prudent decisions.
