A prototype robust controller for Variable Reluctance motor is proposed. A three-level cascade control structure is adopted for this highly non-linear system. the three control levels are all described but a particular emphasis is put on the torque-sharing compensator, designed with non-linear optimization techniques to resolve redundancy in the torque generation of VR motor. the proposed controller is first verified by means of extensive simulation experiments. the architecture of the laboratory prototype controller is presented and experimental results on NSK-Megatorque motor are reported too. Presented results prove feasibility and good performance of the proposed controller, suitable for a very simple and rather inexpensive fully hardware implementation.

As PC tools become commonplace in capacity planning departments, they can be used for bottleneck prediction. system performance can be readily quantified and bottlenecks rank ordered and graphically communicated to upper management. this communication is simple and straightforward with a select number of resources and variables displayed on the same graph. We will discuss a methodology of displaying maximum throughput for DASD and automated tape cartridge library systems. We will vary DASD parameters of skew, cache hit ratios, read-to-write ratio and block size. We will analyze DASD resources of UCB, channels, directors and physical devices. For cartridge library systems we will vary the parameter of file transfer size across the resources of channels, control units, tape devices and robotics. the methodology includes modeling with Microsoft Excel and displaying the results in a meaningful way.

the effect of fixed-pattern noise on the detection of subtle targets embedded in Gaussian white noise was investigated, comparing human detection performance withthat of an ideal linear observer characterized by the Hotelling Trace Criterion (HTC). Five signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) were tested for the two conditions: with and without fixed-pattern noise, where both sets of images also contained Gaussian white noise. In this study, the SNR was calculated using the Gaussian white noise only; the additional fixed pattern noise was not figured into the SNR. Human detection performance did not differ significantly in the two conditions. In both conditions performance increased significantly with increases in SNR. the HTC figure of merit predicted accurately the experimental results for the fixed-pattern noise.

the steady-state model, which relates the manipulated conditions to boththe process and performance quantities, has been developed in this work for plasma etching process by regression analysis. Non-intrusive techniques, namely optical emission spectroscopy and laser interferometry, are employed to estimate the relative plasma species concentrations and electron energy of the process and real-time etch rate respectively in order to maintain the integrity of the etching environment. this information can be used to find the correlations and also feed into the model to track back proper operating conditions. Correlations are developed to directly relate inputs, semi-outputs and outputs in the SF6/Ar etching system. Response surface methodology (RSM) is used as a basis for further modelling of non-linear plasma etching. Results presented in this paper are compared favourably to the known discharge characteristics, experimental data and some interpretations of etching and discharge mechanism as well as the comprehensive reactor model.
