In precision circuits validating the performance in the presence of low-frequency noise is particularly challenging especially at transistor level, as long simulations are required to observe the low frequency performance. However, miming such system-level simulations is rarely practical at transistor level as these simulations can take days to weeks to complete. this work presents a high-level model in Python for generating low-frequency noise which can be used for validating the low-frequency performance of a design in a timely manner. Simulation times can be reduced from days to minutes, enabling designers to achieve a high-level simulation coverage. With Python and NumPy this can be achieved using open-source software tools at no cost.

the monolithic radial transmission line is a core component of multiple proposed pulsed power machine concepts. It is useful to have a model of this component that captures signal propagation in both radial and azimuthal directions, yet is also computationally lightweight and suitable for use in parameter studies and system-wide optimization. Here we present a circuit mesh approach to modelling this transmission line in two dimensions, and compare the predictions of the model to a 3D finite element electromagnetic model to evaluate its performance in two test cases.

Electrification of public transportation systems can significantly reduce the tail-pipe emissions from the vehicle fleet, thus helping alleviate emission concerns and contributing to global efforts towards sustainability. Climate goals and increasing regulatory restrictions on internal combustion engine-based buses in urban spaces are gradually leading to the widespread adoption of electric buses (EBs), which are both emission-free and quieter than conventional buses. Nevertheless, incorporating EBs presents significant challenges for the transportation sector and the power distribution utilities. Factors such as battery capacity, associated charging facilities and their impact on the distribution network must be analyzed thoroughly to ensure the smooth adoption of the EB ecosystem. this paper introduces a comprehensive mathematical model for optimal charging infrastructure design, and battery sizing for EB-based public transport systems in urban setups, including the charger power rating and the number of chargers required to cater charging demands of EBs. the operational schedule of the EBs on all the constituent routes, their per-kilometre energy consumption and on-route (opportunity) charging at the terminal stations have been incorporated into the model. the model has been implemented on a real-life public transit system in a city in India to validate its effectiveness and practicality. the obtained results are able to fulfil all the operational constraints of the considered problem while minimizing the incurred capital cost, which is expected to benefit the concerned stakeholders in making informed decisions on the investment opportunities and technical configuration of the transit system. © 2023 IEEE.

CERN experiments are preparing for the HL-LHC era, which will bring an unprecedented volume of scientific data. these data will need to be stored and processed by thousands of physicists, but expected resource growth is nowhere near the extrapolated requirements of existing models, in terms of both storage volume and compute power. Opportunistic CPU resources such as HPCs and university clusters can provide extra CPU cycles, but there is no opportunistic storage. In this article, we will present the main architectural ideas, deployment details, and test results, with emphasis on our research to build a prototype of a distributed data processing and storage system with a focus on optimizing the efficiency of resources by reducing overhead costs for accessing the data. the described prototype was built using the geographically distributed WLCG sites and university clusters in Russia.

Due to increasing populations and congested traffics, public transportation arrangements are crucial for smart cities. In this paper, a joint method is proposed to optimize public bus scheduling, using real-time online bus information. Specifically, we first introduce three parameters, i.e., number of buses, number of stops, and dwell time, to be the inputs of the optimization process. then, K-means clustering and genetic algorithms are used to optimize collaboratively. Different from traditional genetic algorithms, the proposed method can effectively avoid local optimal results. Besides, we propose two metrics to evaluate the system performance. Real-time online data-based experiments show the effectiveness and robustness of our scheme. As a result, the number of buses and operation efficiency can decrease by 28% to 47% and enhance by 3% to 12%, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

Optimizing the scheduling of operating rooms is quite a challenging task, as different aspects, some of which the medical personnel is not completely aware of, may have a strong impact on the scheduling and need to be taken into account. this work aims at addressing such a problem by proposing a framework that combines process analysis and operations research. Process mining techniques are used for analysing interventional radiology data collected from the information system of a hospital and identifying delays and lagging cases, as well as the causes of these delays. Leveraging the knowledge acquired by looking at data (e.g., the procedures that are more often delayed), an optimization model able to take into account these aspects is designed. this paper describes the preliminary results of a proof-of-concept based on 3 months real-life data. the results show that, taking into account the information discovered from data, allows for obtaining a more accurate scheduling.

the railway signaling system is an important part of the rail systems that is used for railway traffic control and safety. At present, most of railway signaling labs rely on physical models and devices which require large space and regular maintenance. Emerging of Virtual Reality (VR) offers more flexibility to many applications including education, training, and testing since its operations are based on software and visualization. Using VR allows installation, updating, adjustment and maintenance to be performed more easily and effectively with effective cost, time, and space requirement. this paper aims to develop a virtual reality lab for training in railway signaling and control. the VR lab of railway signaling simulation consists of two stations, trains, tracks, a virtual dashboard and signaling posts including point machines. All models used in this paper are created by Blender which is a free software tool for 3D modeling. the VR environment of the lab is created by Unity which is a software platform for VR development. the functions of all developed models are programed using C# language. the basic route setting and the usage of subsidiary signal e.g., call-on and shut signal are demonstrated in this paper. the test results ensure the capability of the developed VR lab for training the target groups including students, engineers, and train drivers. © 2023 IEEE.

Autotuning plays a pivotal role in optimizing the performance of systems, particularly in large-scale cloud deployments. One of the main challenges in performing autotuning in the cloud arises from performance variability. We first investigate the extent to which noise slows autotuning and find that as little as 5% noise can lead to a 2.5x slowdown in converging to the best-performing configuration. We measure the magnitude of noise in cloud computing settings and find that while some components (CPU, disk) have almost no performance variability, there are still sources of significant variability (caches, memory). Furthermore, variability leads to autotuning finding unstable configurations. As many as 63.3% of the configurations selected as "best" during tuning can have their performance degrade by 30% or more when deployed. Using this as motivation, we propose a novel approach to improve the efficiency of autotuning systems by (a) detecting and removing outlier configurations and (b) using ML-based approaches to provide a more stable true signal of de-noised experiment results to the optimizer. the resulting system, TUNA (Tuning Unstable and Noisy Cloud Applications) enables faster convergence and robust configurations. Tuning PostgreSQL running mssales, an enterprise production workload, we find that TUNA can lead to 1.88x lower running time on average with 2.58.. lower standard deviation compared to traditional sampling methodologies.

the Internet of Everything is a necessary link for building smart cities, smart manufacturing, and other scenarios. And the demand for many forms of data such as high definition and high precision for the Internet of Everything puts great pressure on the storage and transmission of data. Starting from the end of the Internet of things (IoT), this paper investigates a compressed sensing algorithm adapted to the end of the IoT sensing and computing system to reduce the power consumption and data communication volume of the end sensing and computing system and proposes an optimization algorithm for iteratively updating the measurement matrix and sparse dictionary. First, fix the sparse dictionary and use adaptive gradient descent to make the Gram matrix infinitely approximate the unit matrix and the matrix determined by the sparse dictionary structure to obtain the optimized measurement matrix;then, use the sample data obtained from this matrix to perform sparse dictionary learning and use the results as the dictionary input for the next round of measurement matrix;finally, improve the measurement matrix and dictionary performance through continuous iterative updating. Simulation experiments show that the measurement matrix and sparse dictionary obtained by this method have better performance for image signal acquisition reconstruction in a low sampling rate environment compared with traditional optimization algorithms. © 2022 IEEE.
