the application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to multi-objective optimization problems has been widespread. However, the EA research community has not paid much attention to large-scale multi-objective optimization problems arising from real-world applications. Especially, Food-EnergyWater systems are intricately linked among food, energy and water that impact each other. they usually involve a huge number of decision variables and many conflicting objectives to be optimized. Solving their related optimization problems is essentially important to sustain the high-quality life of human beings. their solution space size expands exponentially with the number of decision variables. Searching in such a vast space is challenging because of such large numbers of decision variables and objective functions. In recent years, a number of large-scale many-objectives optimization evolutionary algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we solve a Food-Energy-Water optimization problem by using the state-of-art intelligent optimization methods and compare their performance. Our results conclude that the algorithm based on an inverse model outperforms the others. this work should be highly instrumental for practitioners to select the most suitable method for their particular large-scale engineering optimization problems.

We discuss the development and functionalities of the Regionalization Tool (RT) which presents a user-friendly post-processing procedure of scenario results, provided by a long-term energy system investment planning model, as well as a national industrial database. the tool generates geographically explicit clusters of production or consumption volumes for different commodities, according to a selected pathway towards 2050. Doing so, the tool introduces a spatial component to the otherwise aggregated modeling results, thereby balancing the computational cost of the energy system model with increased geographical detail to be used as input for energy infrastructure investment decision models. We demonstrate this added value of the tool through a case study for a decarbonization scenario towards 2050 for Belgium, selected from the PAthS2050 study. the case study highlights the spatial component to the electrification trend that emerges in the scenario results, as well as a geographically varying volumes of hydrogen consumption and captured CO2, thereby providing input to infrastructure investment decision models.

Network slicing is a key technology for 5G and future mobile networks. It enables the creation of different virtual networks on the same physical infrastructure. By applying network slicing to wireless mesh networks(WMNs), it's possible to provide communication infrastructure in a quick and less complicated way. this paper shows an approach based on an evolutionary algorithm connecting multiple WMN nodes to a slice. the first step is modeling the WMN as an undirected graph to get a data structure for the algorithm. the paper then shows the procedure of the different steps of the algorithm. It also shows at which number of nodes to connect the algorithm outperforms a brute force approach. the final results shown in this paper are how the time complexity increases when adding additional nodes to the slices and increasing the network size.

the RUBYDemenz project investigated the effectiveness and optimization of personalized human-robot interaction, which serves as support and relief in the home care of people with dementia. the system, in the form of a puppet interacting with the user via voice, offers a low-threshold and playful integration into everyday life. It was developed by a consortium of various research institutions, companies, and social institutions and was carried out over a period of 42 months. the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences developed the technical system of the puppet. the consortium owns the rights, plans, and developed major parts of the software. the development of the system included the construction of the hardware, mechanics, and electronics, the software, and the interfaces to enable numerous functions. the system is versatile, flexibly expandable, and cost-effective, making it ideal for studies with many field deployments. Due to this properties, it can be easily adapted to various application scenarios making it a perfect system platform for social robot research efforts.

With the flourishing of multiple Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations in wireless communication networks, traditional satellite Tracking, Telemetry, and Command (TT&C) systems encounter difficulties in resolving the TT&C resource scheduling problem. However, Networked TT&C systems can significantly expand the TT&C resource scheduling space by applying Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). To establish a feasible optimization strategy for Networked TT&C systems and evaluate system performance under different conditions, we optimized the Networked TT&C system by designing a networked TT&C resource scheduling algorithm from an overall perspective. the optimization problem of the Networked TT&C system was decomposed into two primary components: the Satellite to Ground Links (SGLs) resource allocation problem and the ISLs topology generation problem. these were solved by a greedy algorithm and the Improved Breadth-First-Search (IBFS) algorithm, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the designed Networked TT&C system is significantly better than the upper bound performance of ground-based TT&C systems under appropriate conditions.

4D imaging radars, commonly known as 4D radars, deliver comprehensive point cloud data that encapsulates range, azimuth, elevation, and Doppler velocity information even in harsh environmental conditions, such as rain, snow, smoke, and fog. However, 4D radar data also suffers from high noise and sparsity, which poses great challenges for SLAM applications. this paper presents RIV-SLAM, a complete radar-inertial-velocity optimization-based graph SLAM system designed to exploit the full potential of 4D imaging radar technology. RIV-SLAM consists of four integral components: front-end, loop closure, IMU pre-integration and graph optimization, each optimized to effectively leverage the unique attributes of radar data and tightly coupled with IMU data. this is also the first SLAM system known to us that outputs an optimized ego velocity. this capability ensures reliable ego motion estimation under extreme conditions (e.g., wheel odometry fails). Furthermore, we develop a new ground extraction approach, specifically adapted for the 4D imaging radar, which substantially improves the system's z-axis accuracy. Comprehensive evaluations of the RIV-SLAM system on a variety of datasets demonstrate its superior performance, significantly surpassing existing state-of-the-art Radar-SLAM frameworks. the code of RIV-SLAM will be released at: RIV-SLAM

China's commercial aircraft manufacturing is transferring into batch production stage. Currently, in aircraft final assembly, learning effect exists, which results in the decrease in task processing time and imposes high level of adaptability for the distribution system. this paper addresses the logistics resource allocation problem for the distribution system in an aircraft final assembly line. Resource allocation is a strategical decision that involves determining the capacity of material storage and transportation. the aim is to obtain a logistics resource allocation solution that minimizes overall resource cost and maximizes the adaptability of the distribution system. To evaluate adaptability, a regression model based on machine learning and De Jong's learning curve is proposed. A multi-objective mathematical model is formulated, and an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on the adaptive grid method is designed to solve the problem. the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method and provide decision support for assembly line planners.

the Industry 4.0 era has enabled the concept of Matrix Production systems, where products can be manufactured on demand by dynamically reconfiguring independent modules on the shop floor. this reconfiguration process, however, is not trivial, since certain possibilities incur much higher reconfiguration costs than others. To tackle this challenge, researchers have employed optimization techniques for identifying the best possible reconfiguration solutions. However, these approaches do not consider the self-adaptive nature of a manufacturing system, i.e., the need to re-optimize configurations when the order queue changes. To address this limitation, this paper focuses on the self-adaptive reconfiguration of Matrix Production system modules. Specifically, it proposes a genetic algorithm-based approach for self-adaptive reconfiguration, introducing the use of a solution archive mechanism. this approach is compared to an integer linear programming model, using a dataset that features dynamic updates to the queue of orders. Results show that the genetic algorithm-based approach generally has lower execution times than integer linear programming, though it does not converge to the global optimum.

As volatility and uncertainty rises in the German electricity system, battery electricity storage systems (BESS) might offer relief for the increasing costs occurring from curtailment, reserve energy and imports. this paper explores the potential benefits of large-scale BESS on the economy by developing an optimization model to minimize these costs. Input data for this model is generated using an agent-based simulation model of the European electricity market, resulting in time series data of day-ahead market prices, loss of load values, imports, exports, power plant dispatch, dispatch of strategic reserve, and curtailment in hourly resolution. Ten different scenarios are analyzed, differing to capture uncertainties in the development of the market. the results show that large-scale BESS can reduce economic costs, although a decreasing marginal benefit can be seen with increasing storage size. Furthermore, the results indicate that a positive economic benefit largely depends on the storage configuration and assumed storage cost development, with the worst outcome being negative net savings and an unprofitable storage. this calls into question the extent to which large-scale BESS are suitable for economic relief.
