Understanding the relationship between traffic flow estimates and air quality assessment requires analyzing how vehicle movements influence environmental pollutants. this involves a thorough examination of vehicle dynamics and pollutant concentrations across transportation networks. Strategically positioning sensors within these networks is crucial, taking into account hardware limitations and maintenance costs. To reduce data processing and network communication demands, sensors must be placed judiciously. In large systems like traffic networks, designing an optimal sensor layout is essential for reliable monitoring. In traffic systems, achieving comprehensive visibility of traffic flows involves selecting the minimum necessary sensors from a larger pool for installation. the goal is to choose a subset of p sensors from a much larger set of n possibilities. this paper presents global search optimization methods to solve this selection problem while ensuring system observability. the selected sensors enable the creation of a Luenberger observer to improve system state estimations. the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through numerical simulations, and its application is further explored using a digital twin of a transportation network, focusing on traffic dynamics and resulting emission levels.

Classrooms often function as multipurpose spaces for educational activities and events, such as musical performances and presentations hosted by campus organizations. Poor acoustics in these environments can affect speech intelligibility and diminish auditory experiences. Origami Echo addresses these challenges through adaptable acoustic panels and a human-robot interaction (HRI) element-a magic wand interface. the system, inspired by active and variable acoustic principles, allows users to dynamically modify the sound profile of a room, ensuring seamless transitions between diverse applications. Using intuitive gestures with the wand, users can interact with the system while achieving acoustic optimization. through a Research-through-Design (RtD) approach, the project demonstrated a 25 percent improvement in sound clarity and reduced reverberation time from 0.9 seconds to the ANSI-recommended 0.6 seconds.

this paper proposes a new type of an air-core brushless induction pulsed alternator (AIPA) that can avoid brush and rotor problems at high speeds. Based on the state space theory, through the position change of the dominant pole of the system, the influence of system parameters (especially the extremely weak magnetizing inductance caused by the air-core structure) on the self-excitation characteristics is analyzed, and basic design principles are given. Finally, the correctness of the theory was verified through simulation.

In recent years, there has been a rising interest in Analog/RF intellectual property (IP) to facilitate reusable designs and streamline the design process. However, existing analog IPs often provide a one-size-fits-all solution, limiting performance options and requiring additional re-design iterations to meet specific targets. To address this challenge, automatic synthesis tools have been employed, then the effectiveness of these tools has been significantly enhanced with the integration of artificial neural networks (ANNs). Nonetheless, the inherent inaccuracies of ANN-based circuit models still necessitate fine-tuning of the solutions. this paper introduces an efficient analog/RF circuit synthesizer that uses ANN-based models and Reinforcement Learning (RL) for fine-tuning. While the ANN-powered PseudoDesigner immediately produces solutions for the defined constraints, RL-based optimization refines the parameters if the pre-found solution fails at the validation step. Even in worst-case scenarios, the overall design process is completed in a few minutes.

the design and development of a data-driven algorithm for battery State-of-Charge estimation is presented. the estimation of battery SoC is important in the development of Battery Management systems. the proposed approach exploits the Least-Squares Support Vector Machine data-driven estimation paradigm and statistical methods. the algorithm’s computational complexity is reduced by using a data pruning procedure. the optimization of the SVM-based estimator is performed by using a Particle Swarm optimization method. the design approach proposed to develop to estimator is validated using a simulation model of the battery and an Estimator Design Tool in MATLAB software which provides a user-friendly interface for the different algorithms that may be used in the estimator design. the approach is applicable to a wide range of applications including automotive systems.

In this paper, we discuss the problem of optimally designing the layout of a given number of photovoltaic arrays on a flat polygonal surface, in order to maximize a suitable objective function, e.g., the total generated energy. this means finding their optimal position, azimuth and tilt. the considered problem becomes non-trivial when considering effects such as irradiance variability and self-shadowing. We first provide a description of the system model and the associated optimization problem, showing how the resulting formulation presents non-convexities. then, we provide a tight parametrized convex relaxation, which is computationally tractable and for which optimality conditions hold. We provide numerical simulations using realistic data, showing how the proposed methodology yields near-optimal solutions in lower computational time with respect to the traditional global resolution approach.

Self-organizing logic gates (SOLGs) are a recently introduced logic family that can be driven from any terminal, and thus can operate in reverse as well as in the standard forward direction. Proposed hardware designs show promising results in simulation for efficiently solving computationally-intensive problems like integer factorization, combinatorial optimization, and Boolean satisfiability, among others. Simulations thusfar in the literature utilize idealized circuit parameters and dynamics, making it unclear how well suited these designs are for hardware fabrication. As a step toward hardware realization, we evaluate the robustness of SOLGs as a function of the tolerance of internal circuit components. through numerical simulation, we find that SOLGs are resilient against noise in the capacitances, resistances, and memristances in the circuit up to 5% tolerance, but are much more sensitive to the parameters in the voltage-controlled voltage sources, needing a tolerance of $\leq 0.1 \%$ for feasibility. We also find that in some cases, noise in the circuit parameters aids the functionality of the gates by removing intermediate solutions, helping the circuit converge to logically valid configurations.

this study introduces an innovative operating corner management strategy for automated circuit sizing, significantly reducing the number of simulations required by sizing algorithms. the proposed method relies on a simulation scheduler that orders the operating corners, based on their level of difficulty, and applies a selective evaluation strategy. Solutions that fail to meet specifications in more challenging corners are quickly discarded, allocating more resources to promising candidates. this approach, underpinned by a novel metric based on the number of corners passed, demonstrates a reduction of up to 71% in simulation budget requirements compared to the other considered methods. We validate our work using two of the most promising evolutionary algorithms for circuit sizing, applied to two proprietary low-dropout regulators.

In this work, different from existing formalisms, we propose a dual-time Petri net model which integrates timed places and timed transitions, providing a detailed approach to system modeling. Specifically, temporal attributes associated with places indicate resource availability, while those associated with transitions signify event feasibility, thus enabling a precise characterization of system behaviors. To comprehensively explore the system’s state space, we present an extended state class graph, facilitating a thorough representation of system dynamics. through an example, we demonstrate the applicability of the dual-time Petri net in a real-world scenario.
