New standards are being introduced to eliminate toxic elements in materials. For instance, copper alloys should no longer contain lead, although this makes them more challenging to machine. Additionally, for environmental reasons, it is crucial to eliminate cutting oils. To address these two challenges, cryogenic cooling during machining can be considered. However, it is first essential to understand the precise mechanical response of the material at low temperatures. this study conducts compression tests on copper across a wide temperature range, from cryogenic temperatures (liquid nitrogen, LN2) to 700°C, and at strain rates from 0.01/s to 10/s. the microstructure of deformed test samples is also characterized by electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) to compare the different plastic deformation characteristics under low and high temperature. the stress-strain curves are fitted with Johnson-Cook (JC) model, which is then implemented into the finite element simulation of the compression process. the results indicate that the JC model with the fitted parameters is not precise enough in terms of modelling very low temperature dynamic response of copper alloy, thus is not proper for the simulation of cryogenic cooling assisted cutting. this is because different characteristics of strain hardening behavior is discovered under LN2 atmosphere temperature and ordinary cutting temperature, which is further induced by a transition of plastic deformation mechanism with increased temperature. therefore, a new constitutive law is proposed considering deformation mechanism at both traditional cutting temperature and cryogenic conditions. the results indicate that the new model has a better fitting of experimental curves than JC model. this study is helpful for the understanding of low temperature copper deformation behavior and new constitutive model exploitation oriented to cryogenic cooling assisted cutting. © 2025 the Authors.

the curved shell plate is an important component of the ship hull. the optimal design of the fixture layout for the curved shell plate is an essential task in the shipbuilding industry, since its dimension significantly affects the geometrical quality of the final hull. However, the current practice in the shipyard adopts a uniform layout of the fixtures without considering locating errors, which leads to excessive deformation. thus, this paper presents a novel methodology for fixture layout optimization considering fixture locating errors. First, the condensed matrix stiffness method is developed to calculate the deformation. then, an optimization model is developed with the objective of reducing the quality loss of the curved shell plate, considering the practical production requirements as constraints. Finally, the particle swarm optimization based on the node distribution characteristics is designed to address the above model. the case study is carried out using the curved shell plate from the shipyard to illustrate and validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Balancing mutually diverging performance metrics, such as, processing latency, outcome accuracy, and end device energy consumption is a challenging undertaking for deep learning model inference in ad-hoc edge environments. In this paper, we propose EdgeRL framework that seeks to strike such balance by using an Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach that can choose optimal run-time DNN inference parameters and aligns the performance metrics based on the application requirements. Using real world deep learning model and a hardware testbed, we evaluate the benefits of EdgeRL framework in terms of end device energy savings, inference accuracy improvement, and end-to-end inference latency reduction.

Composite materials of carbon fiber reinforcements with thermoplastic matrices based on additive manufacturing technologies are used today in a large number of highly technological materials, in various applications, such as aeronautics, automotive or the wind sector. these materials are designed to outperform excellent mechanical behavior, although their resistance to atmospheric agents or mechanical and chemical stresses on the surface is limited. To overcome these stresses, the composite materials are usually protected with a polymeric coating that also provides chemical and mechanical resistance to external agents. In the present work a numerical and experimental analysis is presented of how the properties of the interface between polymer matrix and coating affect the mechanical performance of the protection system. the application of research results is then used in the design and manufacture of a remotely piloted aquatic surface vehicle that requires to achieve the optimal performance with the lightest weight composite structures. ©2022 Alberto et al.

River management faces environmental and social changes;therefore, applying information and communication technologies in the construction domain is required. Since most of the data collected and stored during the operation and maintenance of rivers is machine-unreadable, much effort and time are required to find and retrieve the necessary information and to associate the static data of facilities with digital real-time data. Digital twins are expected to increase infrastructure management efficiency and quality;however, applying digital twins to river management is difficult because most of the data are machine-unreadable. therefore, accumulating machine-readable data and associating static data with dynamic data are required. To meet the requirement, this study proposed a product model of the river domain (referred to as the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) River) and data flow for static and real-time data. this study broke down the elements of rivers into spatial and physical elements and developed classes for the IFC River. the IFC River includes rivers, river channels, and facilities for river management. the structure of the IFC River follows that of other domains of the IFC so that the IFC River can describe complex fields that include multiple domains. As Rivers consist of linear structures (e.g., river channels, levees) and complex structures (e.g., sluices, hydraulic gates), IFC River describes the shape of linear structures using IFC Road, an IFC schema for the road domain. Besides, the data described by the IFC River are static, whereas the digital twin utilizes dynamic real-time data. this study also proposed a data flow that uses a game engine, 3D modeling software, libraries for handling IFC, and NoSQL to realize the digital twins, which contain shapes, properties, and real-time data. the project Industry4Redispatch (I4RD) explores the integration of industrial assets into the redispatch (RD) process in Austria. Emphasizing process and market mechanism specification interaction between transmission and distribution grid system operators, as well as industry optimization, one part of the project focuses on the cost-benefit analysis for different stakeholders. To evaluate the benefits for different stakeholders by industrial participation in the redispatch process, possible ways of providing industrial flexibility and correlated costs must be determined first. From an industrial perspective, the costs associated with a flexibility bid encompass the difference between conventional energy consumption expenses in a base scenario and those incurred in a scenario that accommodates the specific flexibility bid. the paper outlines a method for estimating the costs of industrial bids as a basis for future analyses.

the mental workload associated with work activities is a key factor affecting the performance of human resources in labor-intensive construction operations, in turn impacting work behavior. While most accidents in construction are caused by unsafe behavior, modeling behavior in construction projects remains challenging and relatively unexplored. Here, human cognition is incorporated into the design of construction operations to analyze the mental task demands associated with various designs. A framework that integrates cognitive modeling with a simulation-based decision-support system capable of analyzing existing and non-existing operations in a simple and automated manner is proposed. the superiority of the proposed framework is that it eliminates the need for prior knowledge of the underlying cognitive theories. Functionality of the developed framework was evaluated following its application to a case study of welding operations, where the proposed method was shown to successfully evaluate the trade-off between mental workload and productivity for different operation scenarios. © 2021 the Authors.

Aiming at the characteristics of large heterogeneity and strong time constraint of airborne electromechanical system, an electromechanical event model and collaborative modeling method based on CPS is proposed. According to the complex characteristics of electrical, gas and hydraulic components of electromechanical system, the model describes the time and space information, proposes the system modeling and processing based on event response, adopts a unified model to capture all kinds of events in electromechanical CPS application, and provides upper level services across applications and data sources, the problem of semantic diversity of spatiotemporal data and consistency of interaction semantics of various models in electromechanical CPS system simulation is solved.

Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is a synchronous Medium Access Control (MAC) technology standardized as a part of IEEE 802.15.4e to provide highly reliable communications for resource-constrained devices. While IETF and IEEE standards defined solutions for the configuration of TSCH nodes, the problem of creating dynamic TSCH schedules has been left open. In this poster, we introduce GT-SF, a distributed TSCH scheduling function that is designed based on the non-cooperative game-theory for low-power Internet of things (IoT) applications. We implement GT-SF on Zolerita firefly IoT motes and the Contiki-NG operating system to examine its effectiveness. the evaluation results demonstrate that GT-SF outperforms Orchestra (the state-of-the-art method) by enhancing the packet delivery ratio and reducing the latency.

the Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) system is an approach to identify individuals' emotions. this is important for human-machine interface applications and for the emerging Metaverse. this work presents a bilingual Arabic-English speech emotion recognition system based on EYASE and RAVDESS datasets. A novel feature set was composed by using spectral and prosodic parameters to obtain high performance at a low computational cost. Different classification models were applied. these machine learning classifiers are Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Multi-Layer Perceptron, and Ensemble learning. the proposed feature set performance was compared to the "Interspeech 2009" challenge feature set, which is considered a benchmark in the field. Promising results were obtained using the proposed feature sets. SVM resulted in the best emotion recognition rate and execution performance. the best accuracies achieved were 85% on RADVESS, and 64% on EYASE. Ensemble learning detected the valence emotion with 90% on RADVESS, and 87.6% on EYASE.
