the energy transition is reducing the available flexibility of the power system. Consequently, there is a pressing need to identify new flexibility sources and adapt market designs to ensure a reliable and stable operation of the power system. Among the potential solutions, Demand Response (DR) has shown great potential to offer flexibility through ancillary markets. this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the market design of the Integrated European Balancing Markets, focusing on the FCR, MARI and PICASSO platforms. We evaluate their effectiveness in fostering DR engagement, identifying both strengths and weaknesses. While characteristics such as capacity and granularity hinder DR participation across all platforms, linking and grouping in MARI can increase DR involvement. We propose enhancements, including the addition of linking and grouping characteristics to PICASSO and the approval of conditional linking to complex bids to further incentivize DR participation.

this paper describes the research and development efforts that went into the design of a software solution capable of identifying and classifying logic gates and their connections from a circuit diagram drawn by hand. the system is based on a neural network model (YOLO) used for classification and relies on a series of steps to clean up the data. It is also capable of accurately detecting the hand drawn connections between the classified logic gates and creating an in-memory model of the drawn circuit, which it then uses to simulate its functioning. this could be very helpful in teaching activities (for a start) and maybe even in rapid circuit prototyping, if developed further. throughout this paper, we present a few similar circuit classification works that we identified in the literature, describe the methodology employed in the classification and identification of the circuit elements and provide some details about the tests undertaken to evaluate the system's performance and their results.

the adoption of design patterns in the microservice architecture and cloud-native development scope was recently reviewed to investigate the industry practice. Interestingly, when considering performance-related aspects, practitioners focus on specific metrics (e.g., the time taken to handle requests) to identify sources of performance hindrance. this paper investigates a subset of seven design patterns that industrial practitioners indicate as relevant for system performance. We are interested to quantify the impact of these patterns while considering heterogeneous workloads, thus supporting software architects in understanding the root causes of performance issues. We use queuing networks to build the performance models of the seven design patterns and extract quantitative insights from model-based performance analysis. Our performance models are flexible in their input parameterization and reusable in different application contexts. We find that most design patterns confirm the expectation of practitioners, and our experimental results assess the identified performance gains and pains. One design pattern (i.e., Gateway Offloading) shows the peculiar characteristic of contributing to performance pains in some cases, leading to novel insights about the impact of design patterns in microservice systems.

Concrete mixing stations play a vital role in urban infrastructure construction. In this process, efficient vehicle scheduling and path planning systems have a significant impact on improving concrete supply efficiency, reducing logistics costs and alleviating urban traffic congestion. To address this problem, this study proposes an innovative vehicle path planning method, namely a comprehensive optimization strategy based on the GA-DeepACO-NLS model. this model cleverly combines the technologies of deep reinforcement learning, ant colony algorithm and genetic algorithm form a powerful multi-objective optimization framework. through this fusion, the model is able to effectively deal with complex vehicle path planning problems. In practical applications, through a series of carefully designed experiments, we verified the advantages of this model in reducing the total distance traveled by the vehicle and improving the efficiency of task completion. Experimental results show that compared with existing path planning methods, the GA-DeepACO-NLS model has achieved significant improvements in multiple evaluation indicators. this not only provides a new solution to the vehicle path planning problem of concrete mixing stations, but also provides valuable reference for research and practice in related fields. the GA-DeepACO-NLS model proposed in this study provides an efficient and intelligent solution to the vehicle path planning problem of concrete mixing stations, which helps to promote the sustainable development of urban construction projects and contributes to urban planning and traffic management, it also provides strong technical support for urban planning and traffic management.

system architecture decisions are typically informally captured in design documents. this practice leads to a loss of knowledge that impedes later activities like design changes, impact analysis, and reuse. Model-Based systems Engineering (MBSE) frameworks support the development of increasingly complex systems but must address the problem of capitalization on architectural knowledge. To this end the "Decision Ontology for system Architectures (DOSA)" is developed to provide a formalized data model to capture system architecture decisions. DOSA is developed through a synthesis of decisions observed while developing an architecture model for a preliminary study of a novel satellite navigation system at Airbus Defence and Space. the approach is integrated into an MBSE framework enabling engineers to capture decisions that influence the architecture’s characteristics while developing the system model and imminently trace decision to artifacts of the system architecture. Subsequent visual inspection and formal querying of the decision graph facilitates the analysis of made decisions, and their interrelations.

the primary reason of using multi-bit flip-flop (MBFF) cells as opposed to using single-bit flip-flop (SBFF) cells is to save the dynamic power consumed in the clock network as well as in the flip-flops. However, such power saving comes at the cost of losing the flexibility of moving internal individual flip-flop components over the die, which inevitably negatively affects timing optimization. this work overcomes this inherent limitation by proposing three new design flows, which are fully compatible with commercial EDA (electronic design automation) flow: (flow 1) generating MBFF cells with mixed directions of flip-flops’ D-to-Q flow and including them in cell library, (flow 2) splitting MBFFs into smaller ones to relax cell movement, so that timing can be improved, and (flow 3) applying flow 1 in the placement stage followed by applying flow 2. through experiments with a set of benchmark circuits, it is shown that our proposed flows 1, 2, and 3 are able to reduce the amount of total negative slack by 10%, 14%, and 23%, respectively at the expense of a small increase of power consumption over that produced by the commercial EDA flow.

Droop control and inertia control are the typical control modes for energy storage system (ESS) suppressing power oscillations. However, when the control effect is enhanced to some certain extent, ESS will limit the output power to the device maximum power (termed maximum power modulation mode) and be out of the expected power control because of the limited converter capacity. this paper focuses on the evaluation index of power oscillation suppression and compares the suppression ability of the rate of change of rotor speed with different ESS control modes. the study shows that the power oscillations can be better suppressed than droop control and inertia control modes by providing fast maximum power support; however, the long-term operation of maximum power modulation mode will cause frequent charge and discharge with large current, resulting in its service life decreasing sharply. To this end, an optimized suppression mode based on maximum power modulation and droop control is proposed, the former can alternately output or absorb active power with the converter capacity to quickly make up for the system power shortage, suppressing the driving force of power oscillations, i.e., the unbalanced power. When the evaluation index meets the limit requirements, under effect of droop control, ESS drops out the maximum power mode smoothly and further suppresses the rotor speed deviation to improve frequency quality. Simulation results verify the proposed mode effectiveness.

A new scheme for the automated design and optimization of electromagnetic energy harvesters is presented. the proposed method aims to deal with the limitations of current design techniques and to improve the efficiency of the design process. Most of the current design approaches require significant user experience and knowledge to make informed design decisions, which means that a large amount of time is needed to obtain the optimized design. Additionally, the design solution is suitable only for a specific application, which makes it difficult to adopt it to other application demands. In the proposed method, the development cycle has been sped up significantly by minimizing human efforts and utilizing a generic model for the design process. the method is based on a generic template based on specific resources and requirements, which is processed by a black-box optimization algorithm to come up with a number of promising configuration suggestions. the method's effectiveness and its autonomous operation are demonstrated based on the design optimization of an electromagnetic pick-up unit for vibration energy harvesters using a Halbach array.

the HVAC system is a major energy consumer in a base station (BS), accounting for about 40% of the total energy, and its efficiency is greatly influenced by its placement. Due to the necessity of high reliability and availability in 5G BS, HVAC redundancy is required. therefore, optimizing the placement of the HVAC system is crucial yet challenging for improving energy efficiency in BS. Existing simulation-based analysis methods are infeasible due to their high computational costs, and traditional blind solution search methods are impractical due to the complexities and uncertainties involved. this paper addresses these challenges by proposing an ordinal optimization (OO)-based approach considering practical engineering constraints and HVAC redundancy. the proposed approach aims to find near-optimal solutions with a high probability, facilitating better decision-making in practical design, it involves developing a hybrid physical-based and data-driven parallel simulation model to efficiently analyze the performance of candidate designs. Additionally, a detailed CFD model is developed to make accurate evaluations and generate the best design. Numerical test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of thermal performance, energy efficiency, and search speed.

As the killer application of edge computing, video analytics typically involves multiple vision components in the pipeline, which together determine the quality of service (QoS) for users. By exploiting diverse resource demands of different components, a fine-grained cross-layer orchestration with QoS-aware configuration adaptation can further boost the system efficiency of heterogeneous resources. thus, we study a video analytics pipeline system with vertical and horizontal resource collaboration across device-edge-cloud hierarchy to achieve QoS-aware cost optimization. To judiciously match the component diversity and the resource heterogeneity, we explore smooth configuration adaptation to model a mixed-integer nonlinear problem, which jointly optimizes long-term resource cost and QoS (including accuracy and latency). However, it is nontrivial to efficiently solve such a NP-hard problem in an online manner without the future information as a prior knowledge due to the time-coupling deployment cost caused by fluctuating input traffic. To address the above challenges, we decouple the intractable problem according to the traffic routing constraints. By leveraging the lazy-switching method, we derive the component orchestration decisions for the decoupled subproblems in each slot and further design a dependent rounding scheme to obtain an efficient feasible solution while guaranteeing the knapsack resource constraints. We rigorously analyze the performance guarantee of our online algorithms by a parameterized competitive ratio, and further verify the empirical performance of our approach through extensive trace-driven experiments.
