Ensuring secure spacing between vehicles is vital for road safety, efficient traffic flow, and system stability in autonomous driving. While traditional cooperative platooning approach, relying on centralized coordination exploiting wireless network, faces practical implementation challenges due to communication constraints and diverse driving behaviors, this work introduces a scalable non-cooperative multi-agent platooning strategy based on Deep Reinforcement Learning, leveraging on decentralized decision-making principles. the agents’ aim is to adjust their velocities dynamically to ensure safe following distances and adapt to surrounding vehicle behavior, without the possibility of exchanging information over a wireless network. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach, making it suitable for real-world autonomous driving scenarios.

the advent of quantum computing, characterized by limited resources and qubits, the large circuit depth presents a substantial challenge for quantum algorithms designed to solve linear systems of equations. this paper proposes an innovative approach, named Enhanced Variational Quantum Regression (EVQR), specifically designed for solving non-linear curve fitting problems in higher dimensions and orders. It is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm which not only surpasses the limitations of traditional one-dimensional solvers but also leverages variational principles to address complex problems. Our methodology centers around an initial solution known as an “ansatz” parameterized by a function. By employing quantum circuits, qubits are prepared to efficiently compute inner products in the quantum domain, facilitating accelerated and powerful calculations. the estimated inner product is then transmitted back to the classical computer, where classical optimization techniques such as Levenberg-Marquardt are employed to estimate the function parameters. this iterative process is repeated until the estimation reaches a desired level of accuracy within a predefined tolerance. Notably, we empirically observe that the time complexity of EVQR scales efficiently with the system size N. By leveraging the capabilities of SciPy's curve-fit and the robust optimization techniques of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, our approach overcomes the challenge of higher-dimensional curve fitting. Our primary contribution lies in the fusion of quantum and classical methodologies, a novel integration that, unlike previous quantum approaches, outperforms in terms of performance and accuracy. By combining the strengths of classical optimization and quantum computations, EVQR offers a versatile framework for solving challenging problems, opening new possibilities for data analysis & modeling.

Fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have diverse applications across the industry. However, deployment of these UAVs, at remote locations & marine environment, is especially challenging due to requirement of paved runways. Pneumatic-based launchers provide an efficient and scalable assistive launch or deployment method in such conditions. Pneumatic launcher is a multi-domain dynamic physical system, involving: rigid dynamics, solid mechanics, pneumatics, and thermodynamic processes. therefore, effective design and devel-opment of pneumatic launchers necessitate thorough modelling of these multi-domain processes. In this paper, MATLAB/ Simulink based model of a high-pressure pneumatic launcher for small to medium weight UAVs, is presented. the model is developed with prime considerations for scalability of design, practicality of implementation and adaptability to suit a wide range of UAVs with varying sizes, weight & take-off or launch speeds. Multiple simulations are carried out assess the influence of various design parameters. Moreover, the model is validated through multiple experimental tests on a dedicated test bench. Based on experiments, a correction factor is applied to the model to enhance its accuracy and compatibility with the experimental results. the model provides a reference for future engineering design, development, optimization, and subsequent improvement of Pneumatic launchers for UAVs.

the dynamic nature of many IoT ecosystems poses unique challenges to the efficacy of IoT ML-based applications. One such challenge is data incompleteness. Furthermore, most IoT systems are severely power-constrained. It is important that we build IoT-based ML systems that are robust against data incompleteness while simultaneously being energy efficient. this paper presents an empirical study of SECOE - a recent technique for alleviating data incompleteness in IoT - with respect to its energy bottlenecks. Towards addressing the energy bottlenecks of SECOE, we propose ENAMLE - a proactive, energy-aware technique for mitigating the impact of concurrent missing data. ENAMLE is unique in the sense that it builds an energy-aware ensemble of sub-models, each trained with a subset of sensors chosen carefully based on their correlations. Furthermore, at inference time, ENAMLE adaptively alters the number of the ensemble of models based on the amount of missing data rate and the energy-accuracy trade-off. ENAMLE's design includes several novel mechanisms for minimizing energy consumption while maintaining accuracy. through experimental studies, we demonstrate the energy efficiency of ENAMLE and its ability to alleviate sensor failures.

Traditionally, PV systems are designed to maximize energy output. However, it is important to adjust their orientation strategically to generate more energy during peak demand hours. this approach can maximize PV revenues and reduce its negative impacts on market prices under high PV penetration. this paper investigates the impact of modifying the PV output through fixedtilt orientations and curtailment strategies on revenue and capacity factor maximization in three wholesale electricity markets: California Independent system Operator (CAISO), Germany, and Finland. the results show a 0.63% increase in median revenue generation in the CAISO market when PV systems are deployed with curtailment strategies and panels are oriented towards southwestern azimuths. For the German market, revenue-optimized orientations are slightly towards southeastern azimuths, showing a percentage increase of 2.76 % in median revenue generation, when curtailment is deployed. Curtailment strategies have no influence on revenues in Finland because of no negative electricity prices during sunlight hours.

Bushfires are particularly prevalent in Australia. they pose significant economic and safety challenges. A key component in the mitigation of these challenges is the precise monitoring of burnt areas. In this paper we evaluate modern computer vision models for detecting burnt areas, especially in the context of noisy data, e.g. where there is a significant amount of clouds and smoke, which traditional methods do not adequately address. We design a bushfire data collection pipeline to establish a dataset covering the 2019 Australian Black Summer bushfire events. Several prominent computer vision models are then explored for burnt area detection including Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based models including U-Net [25], Mask R-CNN [10] and YOLOv8 [12], as well as transformer-based models including SAM [16] and SegFormer [31]. We identify that SegFormer-b0 achieves the best performance in the presence of noise such as clouds and smoke with an overall F1-score of 89.7%, IoU of 81.6%, MCC of 89.4% and AIC of 81.7%. this far exceeds traditionally adopted approaches for satellite image analysis dealing with noisy data.

the integration of Quantum Approximate optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and Quantum Annealing (QA) offers a promising approach to addressing energy management and load balancing challenges in modern power systems. this study explores the application of these quantum computing techniques, coupled with Artificial Intelligence (AI), to optimize energy distribution across smart grids. the proposed hybrid model leverages the problem-solving capabilities of QAOA for discrete optimization and the real-time adaptability of QA for minimizing energy consumption and operational costs. AI techniques are employed to predict energy demand, balance loads, and ensure efficient resource allocation. Simulations were conducted on a smart grid scenario involving renewable energy sources, varying demand, and distributed energy generation. the results demonstrate that the hybrid model achieved a 25% improvement in load balancing efficiency and a 30% reduction in energy wastage compared to traditional optimization methods. Additionally, the model reduced peak energy demand by 20%, contributing to overall grid stability. the quantum-enhanced approach also decreased computational complexity by 40%, enabling faster decision-making in dynamic environments. these findings highlight the potential of combining quantum algorithms with AI for sustainable and efficient energy management.

this paper, set against the backdrop of significant breakthroughs achieved during the 20th round of plasma physics experiments at the China Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), introduces the ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) system, an important heating method. It focuses on simulating the deformation of the cathode in the power amplifier of a high-power electron tetrode, a key component of the ICRH system, under normal operating conditions. the simulation was conducted using the general finite element analysis software ANSYS. the main factors causing cathode deformation are gravity and thermal expansion, with thermal expansion being influenced by the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient. the simulation results indicate that the impact of gravity on cathode deformation is minimal; however, when temperature conditions are considered, the deformation increases significantly. Finally, the deformation of the cathode was optimized by adding support wires, and the effect of these wires on cathode deformation was analyzed. through theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, the deformation characteristics of the cathode under working temperature conditions were revealed, providing valuable guidance for optimizing the cathode structure in high-power electron tetrodes.

Wireless sub-mm sized distributed brain implants have been proposed as the next frontier of Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) design to achieve untethered, high-density neural recording and stimulation. Simultaneously improving the wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency and reducing the specific absorption rate (SAR) will be crucial for its clinical success. Towards these goals, we present an EM simulation method, a lumped equivalent circuit model, and a theoretical analysis to accurately predict the power delivered to the recording/ stimulating nodes, as well as the power dissipated in biological tissues and all other lossy elements within the system. this comprehensive framework also explains how increasing the distance between the transmit coil and the scalp can beneficially reduce the SAR without undermining the WPT efficiency. this work presents a rigorous prediction technique for transmission loss and tissue heating towards performance optimization.
