the railway signaling system is an important part of the rail systems that is used for railway traffic control and safety. At present, most of railway signaling labs rely on physical models and devices which require large space and regular maintenance. Emerging of Virtual Reality (VR) offers more flexibility to many applications including education, training, and testing since its operations are based on software and visualization. Using VR allows installation, updating, adjustment and maintenance to be performed more easily and effectively with effective cost, time, and space requirement. this paper aims to develop a virtual reality lab for training in railway signaling and control. the VR lab of railway signaling simulation consists of two stations, trains, tracks, a virtual dashboard and signaling posts including point machines. All models used in this paper are created by Blender which is a free software tool for 3D modeling. the VR environment of the lab is created by Unity which is a software platform for VR development. the functions of all developed models are programed using C# language. the basic route setting and the usage of subsidiary signal e.g., call-on and shut signal are demonstrated in this paper. the test results ensure the capability of the developed VR lab for training the target groups including students, engineers, and train drivers.

Tendon-driven systems have become popular and efficient solutions for remotely positioning motors and actuation systems in various mechanisms. they address specific needs such as reducing the weight and inertia of moving components and minimizing their dimensions. Tendon-actuated systems offer benefits like low cost and the absence of backlash, leading to significant interest in tendon modeling within the scientific community. this interest spans from analytical solutions with inextensible tendons to computer-aided engineering (CAE) approaches utilizing tendons as deformable elements. However, developing tendon-based actuation systems through CAE tools has been limited due to substantial computational requirements and the challenge of obtaining reliable, technically applicable results. Finite element analysis (FEA) becomes complex and unsuitable for the design phase due to the significant deformation and displacement resulting from tendons’ flexible behavior. Consequently, research into robotic systems actuated by tendons typically relies on analytical calculus and data from costly prototypes, requiring significant time and investment. Moreover, incorporating soft structures makes creating a comprehensive analytical model of the entire system in three-dimensional space daunting or even impossible, particularly with more complex soft structures, thus making FEA analysis the only viable approach. this work reviews the main solutions explored in the literature for solving these systems, aiming to provide designers with a broader view of the possible techniques that can be used based on the specific application.

the automatic assembly of dual peg-in-hole often relies on the concrete CAD model, either explicitly or implicitly. However, especially in daily life, the shapes of pegs vary, and the robot cannot always obtain an accurate CAD model of the peg before performing the insertion task. therefore, inspired by the force constraint during contact, we used contact force as the completion indicator of the assembly and proposed a novel two-stage assembly strategy for unknown-shaped dual peg-in-hole. Additionally, a variable remote compliance center method is employed to decouple the contact forces of two pegs and their adjustments. three types of unidirectional movement modes—exploration, compliance, retention—are utilized to guide the peg to contact with the hole under large initial offsets. the performance of the proposed assembly strategy was evaluated through a series of experiments using various shapes of pegs. the results show that our method effectively completes arbitrary mixed-shaped dual peg-in-hole task under large initial offsets in terms of orientation error (>20°) and position error (>30mm) acorss all test cases.

Nowadays, the applications of water quality prediction in the field of regional water environment management are increasing. It refers to predicting the elemental values of the water environment in the future based on past monitoring data, which is essential to realize the real-time evaluation of water quality and dynamic control of pollution sources. However, the water environment indicators are affected by various elements, which have a large volatility and non-linear characteristics. In addition, most of the existing water quality predictions focus on single-step predictive modeling of single elements of the water environment and lack multi-step predictive analysis of multifactor data of the water environment. In this paper, a novel long-term prediction model based on genetic simulated annealing-based particle swarm optimization (GSPSO) with seasonal-trend decomposition using LOESS (STL) is proposed and named GSPSO-STL-Autoformer (GS-Autoformer). It realizes the multi-factor and long-term prediction of water quality time series data. Firstly, the Autoformer’s hyperparameters are optimized by the GSPSO to improve its convergence speed. Secondly, the multi-factor features are decomposed by the STL to make the model more focused on learning feature information of each component. Finally, the long-term prediction is realized by the Autoformer. Comparative experiments with state-of-the-art peers show that the GS-Autoformer can effectively improve the accuracy of multi-factor and long-term predictions.

this paper presents the design and validation of a 3-phase inverter connected to an induction AC motor, which is integrated in a curtain control module. the circuit was modeled using bond graph techniques in the 20-sim software. the bond graph approach helps with the representation of the energy transfer processes within the system, validating an accurate simulation of the inverter circuit’s dynamics. the output voltages were analyzed to validate the performance of the designed inverter circuit. this process confirms the circuit’s ability to effectively manage the induction AC motor, maintaining the desired operational parameters. Furthermore, to enhance the circuit’s performance and minimize voltage loss, parameter sweeps were conducted. the sweeps involved variations of the circuit parameters to identify optimal conditions. the results from the parameter sweeps provided insights into the relationship between the various parameters and their impact on the inverter’s performance. this optimization process led to improvements, ensuring reduced voltage loss and overall efficiency of the curtain control module.

the fast development of wind energy installation in power systems accompanied by the interdependency of power and gas systems due to the application of gas-fueled power generating units (GPGUs) and electric-driven gas system compressors (EGSCs) intensified the importance of coordinated operation of power and gas integrated systems (PGISs) with penetration of wind energy. In this paper, a two-stage robust framework is presented for optimal operation of the PGIS under intermittency of wind energy and demand uncertainties, in which the first stage provides day-ahead scheduling of the PGIS, while the second stage addresses the real-time operation. To enable tractable computation, the Column and Constraint Generation (C&CG) algorithm is used to offer an efficient way of solving the proposed model. Numerical simulations on a 24bus-20node PGIS demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed model.

the recovery of knee mobility plays a crucial role in the postoperative phase after an anterior cruciate ligament injury, necessitating the use of articulated knee braces to strike a delicate balance between immobilization and progressive angular movements. While immobilization is vital to prevent muscle contractions, controlled movement is essential for therapy. To address these challenges, an innovative knee brace prototype with an integrated electrostimulation system was designed and developed. the prototype was meticulously crafted using CAD software, and materials were carefully selected based on the Von Mises study to ensure adequate resistance. the integrated electrostimulation system generates electrical pulses with specific characteristics, promoting muscle relaxation, increased blood flow, and endorphin secretion in the stimulated muscle, particularly the quadriceps. ABS and 3003 aluminum alloy materials were used for the modeling of the knee brace, because they demonstrate a behavior of elasticity close to the desired, indicating that the prototype would only have a minimal deformation in the initial section of the lower part of the knee brace if a load of 150 kgf is applied, as athletes can weigh around 90-120 kg. Further improvements to the power stage and implementation of a Darlington pair to maintain the mirror current are planned, aiming at optimizing the electrostimulation system's performance, the output current should be between 1 to 1.5 amperes which is enough to produce the muscle contraction and relax. this knee brace prototype presents significant potential as an auxiliary tool for postoperative ACL rehabilitation, contributing to patients' successful recovery and improved quality of life.

Human-robot interaction plays a vital role in pushing the capabilities of socially interactive robots by enabling them to deliver content with high emotional intelligence. this research focuses on a supervisory fuzzy framework for constantly evaluating and improving the content delivered by the robot utilizing multimodal inputs and advanced intelligent algorithms. the main reason for using fuzzy logic is that it mimics human decision-making by providing a percentage-based measure of closeness. In this project, ARI Robot is being used with an LLM integration, which enables the user to communicate with the robot. Different algorithms were integrated for the classification of multimodal inputs, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) for the classification of content, Wav2Vec 2.0 for classifying the tone of the user while interacting with the robot, and OpenFace for classifying the facial expression of the user. All of these inputs are then supervised by a fuzzy system with predefined rules to evaluate the content delivered and provide feedback for refinement. the proposed framework ensures an overall evaluation of content delivery, providing intelligent feedback to the ARI robot to improve interaction quality. By integrating these advanced models with fuzzy logic, the system mimics human-like judgment in assessing the interaction of verbal and non-verbal indications, making the way for emotionally intelligent robots in a social world.

the global push for environmental sustainability is driving substantial changes in power systems, prompting extensive grid upgrades. Policies and initiatives worldwide aim to reduce CO 2 emissions, with a focus on increasing reliance on Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) and electrifying transportation. However, the geographical variability and uncertainties of RESs directly impact power generation and distribution, necessitating adjustments in transmission system planning and operation. this paper presents a Transmission Expansion Planning (TEP) model using the 2021 Texas snowstorm as a benchmark scenario, incorporating wind and solar energy penetration while addressing associated uncertainties. Climate Change (CC) and Extreme Weather Events (EWE) are integrated into the set of scenarios aiming at evaluating the proposed method's effectiveness. Comparisons in extreme operative conditions highlight the importance of network reliability and security, emphasizing the significance of merged grids. All simulations are conducted using the ACTIVSg2000 synthetic test system, which emulates the ERCOT grid, with comparisons made between TEP scenarios considering and disregarding CC and EWEs, supporting the concept of umbrella protection.
