Nowadays, the rapid increase of IoT devices and the corresponding high volume of produced data leads to a higher complexity of data analysis and context reasoning tasks. In the IoT, monitoring the context of an application, i.e., the involved devices sensors and actuators as well as their surroundings, is of vital importance. Ontologies can be used to model such context, nevertheless, they usually do not consider live information like sensor values and monitoring data. Yet, this is necessary to capture the full context of an IoT application. In this paper, we propose a context model that includes the current state of devices, composing their static information, such as device names, and live information gathered from monitoring systems and sensors. We further propose an extendable architecture to enrich the ontology with static and live data. Our approach can be extended by integrating different data sources and extending the context model.

With the rapid growth of geospatial data and concurrent users, the state-of-the-art WebGIS cannot support massive data storage and processing due to poor scalability of underlying centralized systems (e.g., native file systems and SDBMS). In this paper, we propose a novel distributed geospatial data storage and processing framework for large-scale WebGIS. Our proposal contains three significant characteristics. Firstly, a scalable cloud-based architecture is designed to provide elastic storage and computation resources of shared-nothing commodity cluster for WebGIS. Secondly, we present efficient geospatial data placement and geospatial data access refinement schemes to improve I/O efficiency. thirdly, we propose MapReduce based localized geospatial computing model for parallel processing of massive geospatial data, which improves geospatial computation performance. We have implemented a prototype named VegaCI on top of the emerging Hadoop cloud platform. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal is efficient and applicable in practical large-scale WebGIS. © 2012 IEEE.

Chip Multiprocessor systems (CMPs) contain more and more cores in every new generation. However, applications for these systems do not scale at the same pace. thus, in order to obtain a good utilization several applications will need to coexist in the system and in those cases virtualization of the CMP system will become mandatory. In this paper we analyze two virtualization strategies at NoC-level aiming to isolate the traffic generated by each application to reduce or even eliminate interferences among messages belonging to different applications. the first model handles most interferences among messages with a virtual-channels (VCs) implementation minimizing both execution time and network latency. However, using VCs results in area and power overhead due to the cost of control and buffer implementation. In contrast, the second model is based on the resource partitioning which results in a space partitioning of the CMP chip in several regions. the paper shows a comparison of both models and identifies their main advantages and disadvantages. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a new concept for modeling of interconnection networks in the field of massively parallel processor embedded architectures. the main focus of the paper is on two interconnection concepts, namely, interconnect-wrapper and DyRIBox definitions of reconfigurable interconnection networks. We compare both interconnection concepts against each other and formally prove their equality. Both concepts allow to model many different reconfigurable inter-processor networks efficiently. Furthermore, we point out how to define the interconnect using an architecture description language for massively parallel processor architectures called MAML. Finally, we demonstrate the pertinence of our approach by modeling and evaluation of different reconfigurable interconnect topologies.

Nowadays, data parallelism has been widely applied to train large datasets on distributed deep learning clusters, but it has suffered from costly global parameter updates at batch barriers. Performance imbalance among worker instances, introduced by uneven workload partitioning or biased resource allocation, can cause straggly workers, which can lead to severe impacts on both training speed and result accuracy. this paper studies the issue focusing on the tradeoff between training speed and result accuracy. We propose Cooperate Grouping parallel (CGP), a hybrid parameter update solution that allows the flexibility of both synchronous and asynchronous update schemes. We introduce a novel Cooperate Worker Grouping Problem (CWGP) that seeks a task grouping configuration that leads to maximum model accuracy and holds customized training speed guarantees. We propose an evolution-based Pareto local searching algorithm to compute efficient worker grouping configurations. Comprehensive evaluation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of CGP under both persistent and fluctuant imbalances. the proposed method alleviates the imbalance impacts without introducing extra adjustment over-heads. © 2022 IEEE.

Today's technical systems are becoming increasingly complex. Future systems will consist of a multitude of complex soft- and hardware components, which interact with each other to satisfy global system functional requirements. this trend bears the risk of more and more breakdowns and other unexpected behaviour. Organic computing (OC) has the vision of addressing the challenges of complex distributed systems by making them more life-like (organic), i.e. endowing them with abilities such as self-organisation, self-configuration, self-repair, or adaptation. this can only be achieved by giving the system elements adequate degrees of freedom. this may result in an emergent behaviour, which can be positive as well as negative. therefore, we need an observer/controller architecture, which allows for self-organisation but at the same time enables adequate reactions to control the - sometimes completely unexpected - emerging global behaviour. In this paper, we give an introduction to a generic observer/controller architecture, adapt this framework to a scenario of a self-organising robot swarm, and show how to control and prevent global, collective, unwanted behaviour based on observations of the local behaviour of the distributed agents.

In this paper we study a social welfare maximization problem for spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks. To fully use the spectrum resource, the spectrum owned by the licensed primary user (PU) can be leased to secondary users (SUs) for transmitting data. We first formulate the social welfare of a cognitive radio network, considering the cost for the primary user sharing spectrum and the utility gained for secondary users transmitting data. the social welfare maximization is a convex optimization, which can be solved by standard methods in a centralized manner. However, the utility function of each secondary user always contains the private information, which leads to the centralized methods disabled. To overcome this challenge, we propose an iterative distributed algorithm based on a pricing-based decomposition framework. It is theoretically proved that our proposed algorithm converges to the optimal solution. Numerical simulation results are presented to show that our proposed algorithm achieves optimal social welfare and fast convergence speed. © 2014 IEEE.
