With big data analysis and cloud storage improving at an astonishing rate in recent years, more and more parallel computing and data analysis techniques are invented and applied to accessing data from a distributed storage system, which has noticeable differences with accessing data from a separate dedicated storage system. the first and the last processes of a data analysis task in a shared filesystem may have a remarkable gap in latency. the latency of parallel file requests from these processes, however, lacks analytical model especially when erasure code is employed as storage strategy. the main contribution of this work is development of a tight bound of parallel file request latency to give a theoretical upper bound of lantency. Additionally, an exact batch file chunk request analytical model in distributed systems adopting erasure code is studied by the technique of two embedded Markov chains, performance measures such as queue length distribution, waiting time distribution, etc. are derived in closed form. Experimental evaluation verifies accuracy of the theoretical upper bound on latency.

In this paper, we present an advanced multiprocessor cache architecture for chip multiprocessors (CMPs). It is designed for the scalable GigaNetIC CMP, which is based on massively parallel on-chip computing clusters. Our write-through multiprocessor cache is configurable in respect to the most relevant design options. It is supposed to be used in universal co-processors as well as in network processing units. For an early verification of the software and an early exploration of various hardware configurations, we have developed a SystemC-based simulation model for the complete chip multiprocessor. For detailed hardware-software co-verification, we use our FPGA-based rapid prototyping system RAPTOR2000 to emulate our architecture with near-ASIC performance. Finally, we demonstrate the performance gains for different application scenarios enabled by the usage of our multiprocessor cache.

Publish/subscribe systems are widely used as messaging middleware in various scenarios, such as online business, financial trading, and social media. However, the network overhead intro-duced by the pub/sub system can severely impact application performance. Especially in the latency-sensitive applications of the data center, optimizing the latency of publishing or delivering messages of the pub/sub system is particularly important. RDMA network has gained popularity in relevant applications due to its low latency, high bandwidth and ability to bypass the CPU. Never-theless, it is still challenging to design and optimize the pub/sub system using RDMA. through an in-depth analysis of RDMA features, we design and implement FNotify, a high-performance RDMA-accelerated pub/sub system. FNotify optimizes latency and CPU load using in-memory message management and one-sided RDMA primitives for message collection. FNotify also proposes a topic-based partitioning scheme to achieve good scal-ability. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation and analysis on an 8-node RDMA cluster to verify the validity of our design by comparing the performance of FNotify with Apache Kafka (a state-of-the-art pub/sub system) in a typical pub/sub application scenario and various micro-benchmarks. Experimental results show that FNotify improves overall performance by 1.5× to 3.9× and reduces end-to-end latency by more than 20× compared to Apache Kafka. © 2022 IEEE.

In this work-in-progress research paper,we make the case for using Rust to develop applications in the High Performance computing (HPC) domain which is critically dependent on native C/C++ libraries. this work explores one example of Safe HPC via the design of a Rust interface to an existing distributed C++ Actors library. this existing library has been shown to deliver high performance to C++ developers of irregular Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) applications. Our key contribution is a proof-of-concept framework to express parallel programs safely in Rust (and potentially other languages/systems), along with a corresponding study of the problems solved by our runtime, the implementation challenges faced, and user productivity. We also conducted an early evaluation of our approach by converting C++ actor implementations of four applications taken from the Bale kernels to Rust Actors using our framework. Our results show that the productivity benefits of our approach are significant since our Rust-based approach helped catch bugs statically during application development, without degrading performance relative to the original C++ actor versions.

Medical Image AI systems can assist doctors in making diagnoses, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy. these systems are now widely used in hospitals. However, current AI diagnostic methods typically rely on various deep learning technologies, which require substantial computational resources. When diagnostic demands surge, traditional monolithic architectures may suffer from low computational performance and queue congestion. To address these issues, this paper compares and analyzes two system architectures based on parallel computing and distributed computing. the first one is a coarse-grained multi-service instance architecture, which uses clustering to expand the system's service instances, though it still presents some challenges. the second is a fine-grained workflow-based distributed architecture, which abstracts the diagnostic process into a workflow divided into several subtasks managed and scheduled by the cluster. this architecture demonstrates advantages in several aspects. Finally, this paper implements a Medical Image AI System for pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis based on the workflow-based distributed system architecture. © 2024 IEEE.

One of the problems central to data consistency is data repairing. Given a database D violating a set Sigma of data dependencies as data quality rules, it aims to modify D for a new relation D' satisfying Sigma. When D is a centralized database, a host of methods have been provided to address this problem. In practice, a database may be fragmented and distributed to multiple sites, which is advocated by distributed systems for better scalability and is readily supported by commercial systems. this paper makes a first effort to develop techniques for repairing functional dependency violations in a horizontally partitioned database. (1) Based on a message-passing distributed computing model and two complexity measures (parallel time and data shipment) for distributed algorithms, we study data repairing with equivalence classes in the distributed setting. We show that it is NP-complete to build equivalence classes when the data is horizontally partitioned, and when we aim to minimize either data shipment or parallel computation time. (2) Despite the intractability, we propose efficient distributed algorithms and optimization techniques for data repairing based on equivalence classes. (3) We experimentally verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms, using both real-life and synthetic data.

Sensor network technology is pushing towards integration into the business world. By using sensor node hardware to augment real life business items it is possible to capture the world and support processes where they actually happen. Many problems of the business logic running our world can be efficiently implemented "on the item". In order for these smart items to couple back to the virtualized world of business processes it necessary to design a uniform system abstraction for enterprise systems. Service oriented architectures are the tool to describe functionality apart from its concrete implementation. this paper describes a system and the experiences made integrating wirelessly networked smart business items into high-level business processes.

Numerous geospatial models have been developed. Development of technologies that facilitate sharing geospatial model becomes highly desirable. Although geospatial infrastructures built using standards-based distributed services have become the default computing paradigm adopted, most of them have been built following a top-down approach that only official providers are entitled to deploy and preserve geospatial resources including geospatial models. Since the mechanisms to deploy geospatial model as a web service in geospatial infrastructures are technologically complex, there has been limited participation from users, resulting in a scarcity of sharing geospatial model resources. Furthermore, the poor efficiency of geospatial model online implement remains the pains in most of geospatial infrastructures for transmitting and computing geodata in standard OGC service. Nowadays, the development of Cloud computing including associated spatial computing becomes the promising technology which is essential for enabling computing-intensive and data-intensive geospatial research and applications. Citizen sensing activities are accumulating data, information and models at a comparable or faster pace. To utilize these emerging technologies for addressing the limitations mentioned above, we present a distributed framework based on OGC specification and extend it with a service deploy component. this component improves ad hoc integration, deployment and register of geospatial model resources by two distinguishing approaches. Geospatial models can then be deployed, shared and accessed through tools and systems compliant with WPS by end users. Moreover, we modified the interface specification of WPS and WFS conforming to the MapReduce parallel computing mode and designed a self-adaptive task regulating mechanism for Hadoop and achieved great acceleration of the data-intensive computing in geospatial model. In mobile edge computing (MEC) systems with energy harvesting, the mobile devices are empowered with the energy that harvested from renewable energy sources. On the other hand, mobile devices can offload their computation-intensive tasks to the MEC server to further save energy and reduce the task execution latency. However, the energy harvested is unstable and the mobile devices have to make sure that the energy should not be run out. Moreover, the wireless channel condition between the mobile device and the MEC server is dynamically changing, leading to unstable communication delay. Considering the energy constraints and unstable communication delay, the benefit of computation offloading is limited. In this paper, we investigate D2D-assisted computation offloading for mobile edge computing systems with energy harvesting. In our method, the mobile device is allowed to offload its tasks to the MEC server with the help of its neighbor node. More Specifically, the neighbor node acts as a relay to help the mobile device to communicate with the MEC server. Our goal is to minimize the average task execution time by selecting an optimal execution strategy for each task, i.e., whether to execute the task locally, or offload it to the MEC server directly, or offload it to the MEC server with the help of the most suitable neighbor node, or just to drop it. We propose a low-complexity online algorithm, which stem from Lyapunov Optimization-based Dynamic Computation Offloading (LODCO) algorithm, to solve this problem. Extensive simulations verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, where the average task execution time is reduced around 50% as compared to that of the original LODCO algorithm. © 2019 IEEE.
