Considers the scheduling of mixed task- and data-parallel modules comprising computation and communication operations. the program generation starts with a specification of the maximum degree of task- and data-parallelism of the method to be implemented. In several derivation steps, the degree of parallelism is adapted to a specific distributed memory machine. We present a scheduling derivation step based on the genetic algorithm paradigm. the scheduling takes not only decisions on the execution order (independent modules can be executed consecutively by all processors available or concurrently by independent groups of processors) but also on appropriate data distributions and task implementation versions. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm by an example from numerical analysis.

the paper presents a method to build a distributed real-time operating system for distributed embedded control systems using aspect-oriented programming. We define aspects to weave distributed computing mechanisms to an existing real-time operating system. By using the aspects, we can build a distributed operating system without modifying the original source code. this improves the maintainability of the source code of a real-time operating system family. We have applied the aspects to an OSEK OS and have got a distributed operating system that provides location-transparent system calls for task management and inter-task synchronization. the evaluation results show that the overhead of aspect-oriented programming is practically small enough.

State Estimation (SE) is one of the main tools in the operation of power systems. Its primary role is to filter statistically small errors and to eliminate spurious measurements. SE requires an adequate number of measurements, varied, and strategically distributed in the power grid. Criticality analysis consists of identifying which combinations of measurements, forming tuples of different cardinalities, are essential for observing the power network as a whole. If a tuple of measurements becomes unavailable and, consequently, unobservable, the tuple is considered critical. the observability condition is verified by the factorization of the residual covariance matrix, which usually is a time-consuming computation task. Also, the search for criticalities is costly, being a combinatorial based problem. this paper proposes a parallel approach of the criticality analysis in the SE realm, through multi-threads execution on CPU and GPU environments. To date, no publication reporting the use of GPU for computing critical elements of the SE process is found in the specialized literature. Numerical results from simulations performed on the IEEE 14- and 30-bus test systems showed speed-ups close to 25x, when compared with parallel CPU architectures.

Summary form only given, as follows. the complete presentation was not made available for publication as part of the conference proceedings. Software systems must satisfy rapidly increasing demands imposed by emerging applications. For example, new AI applications, such as autonomous driving, require quick responses to an environment that is changing continuously. At the same time, software systems must be fault-tolerant in order to ensure a high degree of availability. As it stands, however, developing these new distributed software systems is extremely challenging even for expert software engineers due to the interplay of concurrency, asynchronicity, and failure of components. the objective of our research is to develop reusable solutions to the above challenges by means of novel programming models and frameworks that can be used to build a wide range of applications. this talk reports on our work on the design, implementation, and foundations of programming models and languages that enable the robust construction of large-scale concurrent and distributed software systems.

In this paper, for the first time, we tackle the scalability problem of Influence Maximization (IM) via distributed computing. First, we propose a distributed IM algorithm based on IRIE, one of the most state-of-the-art IM algorithms. then an incremental updating method is proposed to reduce the overhead of repeated computation. Furthermore, based on some new insights, we redesign our algorithm with a strategy, which we call reservoir, to accumulate increments and delay exchange between machines. Experiments on real-world and synthetic networks show our redesigned algorithm, i.e. dIRIEr (distributed IRIE with Reservoir), reduces communication traffic dramatically and speeds up continuously as more machines are added in. dIRIEr can handle giant networks with hundreds of millions of nodes where centralized algorithms become infeasible.

We describe the implementation underlying an environment for distributed computing that uses the concept of well-known paradigms. the main advantage of paradigm oriented distributed computing is that the user only needs to specify application-specific sequential code, while the underlying infrastructure takes care of the parallelization and distribution. the main features of the proposed approach, called PODC, which differentiate it from other approaches, are the following: (1) it is intended for loosely-coupled network environments, not specialized multiprocessors; (2) it is based on an infrastructure of mobile agents; (3) it supports programming in C, rather than a functional or special-purpose language, and (4) it provides a Web based interactive graphics interface through which programs are constructed, invoked, and monitored. the three paradigms presently supported in PODC are the bag-of-tasks, the branch-and-bound and genetic programming. We describe their implementation and performance within the mobile agent based PODC environment.

In the past few years, data continuously increase and in various forms called Big Data. Besides, data analytics play an important role more and more in most organizations. From these reasons, many efficiently distributed messaging systems have been introducing to handle Big Data in real-time. However, choosing the appropriate and efficient methods and tools to transfer Big Data is still challenging. therefore, this paper purposes of comparing the architecture, performance, and resource utilization between Apache Kafka which is one of the favorite tools for Big Data and Apache Pulsar which is similar to Kafka and become one of the latest tools for big data. After we implemented both systems in the same environment, the results show that Pulsar outperforms in throughput, latency, and average resource utilization especially when the size of messages is small (such as 1 KB and 1MB).

To protect mobile agents from attacks by their execution environments, or hosts, one class of protection mechanisms uses "reference states" to detect modification attacks. Reference states are agent states that have been produced by non-attacking or reference hosts. this paper examines this class of mechanisms and presents the bandwidth of the achieved protection. First, the notion of reference states is introduced. this notion allows to define a protection scheme that can be used to realize a whole class of mechanisms to protect mobile agents. To do so, after an initial analysis of already existing approaches, the abstract features of these approaches are extracted. A discussion examines the strengths and weaknesses of the general protection scheme, and a framework is presented that allows an agent programmer to choose an appropriate protection level using this scheme. An example illustrates the usage of the framework and its overhead.

Mobile agent technology has been proposed for various fault-sensitive application areas, including electronic commerce, systems management and active messaging. Recently proposed protocols providing the exactly-once execution of mobile agents allow the usage of mobile agents in these application areas. Based on these protocols, a mechanism for the application-initiated partial rollback of the agent execution is presented. the rollback mechanism uses compensation operations to roll back the effects of the agent execution on the resources and uses a mixture of physical logging and compensation operations to roll back the state of the agent. the introduction of different types of compensation operations allows performance improvements during the agent rollback.
