the evolution of computers and networks has motivated the development of high performance systems using the distributed system concepts. Such evolution has motivated the study of load balancing techniques, low latency protocols, operating systems and middlewares. Furthermore, the evolution from distributed systems based on clusters to grid environments has motivated new researches to define load balancing algorithms to support scalable and heterogeneous computing capacity environments. In this paper, the route load balancing algorithm is proposed, presented and evaluated. this algorithm is designed to equally distribute the workload of tasks of parallel applications over grid computing environments. Experiments compare the performance of the proposed algorithm to others from literature. the obtained results allow concluding that the route algorithm is indicated for environments where there are several heterogeneous computers and parallel applications are composed of multiple tasks.

With the development of cloud computing, data security became popular in recent decades. However, traditional cryptography has some major limitations. For example, public key cryptography is not scalable in cases with many clients. Since Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) was developed in 2007, it has become as one of the major candidates to implement secure cloud storage. However, CP-ABE still cannot play a solid role due to its several limitations such as complexity of computation, lack efficiency revocation function, etc. this paper will review the CP-ABE and analyze the current CP-ABE toolkit. Major performance bottleneck will be identified and parallelized in CUDA. CP-ABE toolkit will be partially ported to GPU platform for acceleration. Some experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

GPU computing has revolutionized HPC by bringing the performance of the supercomputer to the desktop. Attractive price, performance, and power characteristics allow multiple GPUs to be plugged into both desktop machines as well as supercomputer nodes for increased performance. Excellent performance and scalability can be achieved for some problems using hybrid combinations of multiple GPUs and CPU computing resources. this paper presents the acceleration of the open-source Quantum ESPRESSO package with the freely available phiGEMM library. Specifically, the parallel implementation and scaling of the phiGEMM matrix-matrix multiplication will be discussed. this library can be called from applications through all standard GEMM interfaces and it is able to perform matrix-matrix multiplications using one or more GPUs as well as the host multi-core processor. An 8.9-times speedup is reported in overall run-time of a representative AUSURF112 benchmark for a PWscf calculation. In addition, multi-GPU scaling and performance for 3D-FFTs are discussed.

Cloud computing has promoted the widespread use of virtualized machines. A question arises: How does virtualization influence the performance of running applications? the answer must be a common interest of application developers and users. this paper describes the results of our performance evaluation on a virtualized multicore machine. We tested a set of benchmark applications and detected some general features that should be considered when running applications on a virtualized multicore machine. We also studied the application execution behavior using profiling tools. We found the reason for unexpectedly poor performance of an OpenMP application in a virtualized setting and optimized the program. the optimization resulted in a significant performance gain.

Betweenness centrality is a measure that determines the relative importance of a vertex (or an edge) within a graph based on shortest paths. Recently, large-scale graphs have emerged in many different domains, as social networks, road networks, protein interaction networks, etc., and they are too large to fit into the memory of a single SMP. the algorithm proposed by Edmonds et al. [1] is capable of running on distributed memory systems. However, the algorithm does not expose intra-node parallelism. In this paper we investigated the inter- and intra-node parallelism of computing betweenness centrality on distributed memory systems. We developed the implementation based on the algorithm proposed by Edmonds et al. using X10 programming language [2]. We further improved the performance of the implementation by optimizing the network transport of the X10 runtime. We thoroughly evaluated the performance of our implementation on synthetic graphs of various scales against the existing implementation of Edmonds' algorithm from PBGL. We estimated the betweenness centrality of the huge Twitter networks [3] and found that its distribution follows a power law.

Environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided potential for battery-powered wireless sensor networks to have perpetual network operations. To design a robust network that can adapt to not only temporal but also spatial variations of ambient energy sources, in this paper, we utilize mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks, by employing a mobile data collector, called SenCar. We propose a two-stage approach for mobile data collection. In the first stage, SenCar makes stops at a subset of selected sensor locations to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We provide a selection algorithm to search for sensor locations with most residual energy while guaranteeing a bounded tour length. then we design a distributed data gathering algorithm to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling and flow routing that adapts to spatial temporal environmental energy variations. the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms are validated by extensive numerical results.

Following a constant rise in the complexity and scale of peer-to-peer networks, researchers have looked at biological phenomena in order to develop self-organized, adaptive, and robust management systems. Our focus is on distributed swarm intelligence mechanisms that mimic the behavior of social insects to solve problems such as overlay management, routing, task allocation, and resource discovery. A central problem in the validation of novel networking solutions is their empirical evaluation under different conditions. Whereas existing network simulation platforms lack specific support for ant-inspired protocols (like transparent agent migration), dedicated frameworks for bio-inspired systems fail to implement accurate network models. To bridge this gap, we introduce a framework with support for bio-inspired techniques and realistic network underlay simulation based on Over Sim. To validate our work, we describe the implementation of several swarm-based protocols and we provide some measurements of the simulation performance.

Modern supercomputer performance is principally limited by power. TSUBAME-KFC is a state-of-the-art prototype for our next-generation TSUBAME3.0 supercomputer and towards future exascale. In collaboration with Green Revolution Cooling and others, TSUBAME-KFC submerges compute nodes configured with extremely high processor/component density, into non-toxic, low viscosity oil with high 260 Celsius flash point, and cooled using ambient / evaporative cooling tower. this minimizes cooling power while all semiconductor components kept at low temperature to lower leakage current. Numerous off-line in addition to on-line power and temperature sensors are facilitated throughout and constantly monitored to immediately observe the effect of voltage/frequency control. As a result, TSUBAME-KFC achieved world No.1 on the Green500 in Nov. 2013 and Jun. 2014, by over 20% c.f. the nearest competitors.

Today, VLSI systems for computationally demanding applications are being built as systems-on-chip (SoCs) with a distributed memory subsystem which is shared by a large number of processing elements. the memory sub-system is a potential performance bottleneck in the system. In this paper, the authors consider such a distributed memory subsystem and study the impact of address space distribution on system performance. For a given application on such a system, we introduce the notion of address assignment quality. We show that this assignment quality metric is strongly correlated with memory subsystem throughput over large regions of the design space. We show this using open loop performance modeling of the memory subsystem, and justify this using a queueing and a Markov chain analysis. Further, we develop a detailed memory subsystem model for a multi-processor simulation system built on the Augmint framework. Using two (highly parallel) applications (matrix multiplication and bubble sort) the authors show that application throughput and assignment quality are strongly correlated over large regions of the design space. We infer that maximization of the assignment quality metric can be a fundamental goal in designing memory subsystems and in developing applications in such systems-on-chip

this paper improves the parallel multi-dimensional indexing system which stores data into several multi-dimensional indexes and retrieves required data from them in parallel. this system treats a set of data as a rectangle, which covers the data. the rectangle is inserted into an index. We must consider two important points. One is that the area of each index covers as wide as possible so that many indexes could be used in the retrieval. the other is that the number of rectangles which each index has is the same as possible so that the time in finishing the retrieval on each index could be the same as possible. the conventional system selects an index to which a rectangle is moved by using the area that the index covers and the number of rectangles that the index has. the conventional system first evaluates the degree of the expansion of area and then evaluates the number of rectangles. this paper changes the evaluation order. the number of rectangles is firstly evaluated. It is experimentally shown that the new evaluation order gives us good retrieval performance.
