In this paper, we provide an "Improved Channel Aware QoS Scheduling Architecture for WiMAX Base Stations". In this scheme, we provide intelligence to the classifier by having feedback from the compensation block. We capitalize on the design of WiMAX, which differentiates connections with separate connection IDs and classifies traffic, based on a class-based approach. We propose a design in which the Classifier, in order to provide excellent QoS, admits frames with only those CIDs that can be serviced without any significant delay to the real time voice and video applications, thus improving the overall QoS. In other words, it rejects a packet having a CID which is experiencing bad channel quality and allows unmarked CIDs to utilize the channel at its maximum efficiency.

the paper presents a method to build a distributed real-time operating system for distributed embedded control systems using aspect-oriented programming. We define aspects to weave distributed computing mechanisms to an existing real-time operating system. By using the aspects, we can build a distributed operating system without modifying the original source code. this improves the maintainability of the source code of a real-time operating system family. We have applied the aspects to an OSEK OS and have got a distributed operating system that provides location-transparent system calls for task management and inter-task synchronization. the evaluation results show that the overhead of aspect-oriented programming is practically small enough.

MultiRing is a network of 2nnodes which can be configured into different ring networks of n different configurations. It supports a wide variety of algorithms, such as algorithms for parallel image processing. In this paper, a MultiRing is implemented using a star topology with a MultiRing switch at the centre. We present a hierarchical design of the MultiRing switch. We demonstrate that the construction of the switch is economical in terms of gate count and port numbers. Our design preserves the need that all nodes can communicate simultaneously and independently in a ring configuration. Streaming computing is a paradigm of distributed computing that features networked nodes connected by first-in-first-out data channels. Communication between nodes may include not only high-volume data tokens but also infrequent and unpredictable control messages carrying control information, such as data set boundaries, exceptions, or reconfiguration requests. In many applications, it is necessary to order delivery of control messages precisely relative to data tokens, which can be especially challenging when nodes can filter data tokens. Existing approaches, mainly data serialization protocols, do not exploit the low-volume nature of control messages and may not guarantee that synchronization of these messages with data will be free of deadlock. In this paper, we propose an efficient messaging system for adding precisely ordered control messages to streaming applications. We use a credit-based protocol to avoid the need to tag data tokens and control messages. For potential deadlocks caused by filtering behavior and global synchronization, we propose deadlock avoidance solutions and prove their correctness.

In this paper, for the first time, we tackle the scalability problem of Influence Maximization (IM) via distributed computing. First, we propose a distributed IM algorithm based on IRIE, one of the most state-of-the-art IM algorithms. then an incremental updating method is proposed to reduce the overhead of repeated computation. Furthermore, based on some new insights, we redesign our algorithm with a strategy, which we call reservoir, to accumulate increments and delay exchange between machines. Experiments on real-world and synthetic networks show our redesigned algorithm, i.e. dIRIEr (distributed IRIE with Reservoir), reduces communication traffic dramatically and speeds up continuously as more machines are added in. dIRIEr can handle giant networks with hundreds of millions of nodes where centralized algorithms become infeasible.

Next generation multimedia mobile phones that use the high bandwidth 3G cellular radio network consume more power. Multimedia algorithms such as speech, video transcodecs have very large instruction foot prints and consequently stalled due to instruction cache misses. the conflicts in on-chip caches contribute a large fraction of the CPU cycle penalty and hence increase in power consumption. Many commercial tools are developed to minimize such cache misses by adequately placing the frequently called procedures in an application. Followed by profile extraction, these tools use cache line coloring and post compilation techniques for cache hit optimization. the major impediment in the optimal performance of such tools is their static layout profile, which does not consider the dynamic behavior of the application. We propose a methodology called DCP (dynamic code placement) for positioning code at run time for good instruction cache performance and have implemented in high end processors. the dynamic application profile is completely transparent to the developer’s code. this technique optimizes the code footprint in memory layout of a program. It improves i-cache mapping to increase the number of cache hits and eventually reduce the CPU stalls. Our optimization is powered with static as well as detail run time profile information that extracts the relevant, temporal behavior of the applications. Moreover, while mapping code in instruction cache, the effect of inter-procedural code positioning is also considered. Improvement over the Pettis and Hansen approach (PH) is also shown in results. though majority of multimedia applications can be optimized by our framework, application dominated with the function pointers do not work correctly. the technique incurs low overheads and enhances the cache hits architecture correlation. Cloud computing is the emerging and attractive technology and provides users with various services in a pay-as-you-go manner. Cloud computing nowadays does not limit resources of the services in a cloud to the computers that are far away from users and connected to each other in a data center with high speed networks at the same geographic location. Cloud computing may present a cloud to users by connecting resources at multiple geographic locations. By connecting resources at multiple geographic locations to organize a cloud, cloud computing may meet problems of communication interception, congestion, and interruption. Cloud computing should have a way to supply extra processing on demand for certain links between computers separated geographically. Since a MapReduce cloud is the key to the success of the large-scale computation, cloud computing can use the Smart MapReduce Cloud (SMRC) proposed in this paper to apply extra processing to intermediate data on demand while intermediate data is delivered among computers in the MapReduce cloud. In experiments, cloud computing is tested with several popular MapReduce applications to observe performances of data encryption and compression via XOR and GZIP functions in SMRC.

In a mobile grid computing framework where mobile devices are used as computing resources, minimizing the task offloading time remains an important issue. A task is an independent unit of execution consisting of a input data volume for execution and optionally a target-specific executable. We consider a mobile grid infrastructure where mobile devices are connected via Wi-Fi network and the grid infrastructure has a set of tasks (i.e. a set of data volumes) to be transferred to a subset of the mobile devices. In a Wi-Fi network, mobile devices usually associate themselves to the access points (APs) having the strongest radio signal. In this paper, we address the problem of AP activation (by frequency assignment) and association of AP with devices in the context of minimizing the overall data-transfer completion time. We present a constraint based formulation and also a heuristic as solutions. Simulations results are presented which contrast our proposed methods with some of the earlier works.

Volunteer computing projects use donated CPU time to solve problems that would otherwise be too computationally intensive to solve. the donated CPU time comes from computers whose owners install a volunteer computing client program on their computer, allowing a project to use the computer's idle time. the low participation rate in volunteer computing and the increasing number of volunteer computing projects make improvements that more effectively use the donated CPU cycles very important. Past work showed that using certain task retrieval policies could increase the number of tasks volunteer computing clients complete. However, the past work assumed that the volunteered computers had a single CPU and the task retrieval methods that resulted in more completed tasks required the client to be connected to the Internet more often than the other policies. We simulated the task retrieval policies for computers with multi-core CPUs and found that in most cases, the multi-core architecture can lead to a slightly greater than linear increase in the number of tasks that the clients complete, relative to the number of cores the computer running the client has. Additionally, the multi-core architecture can reduce the performance gap between the best and worst performing policies significantly, affecting which policies are used.

Cyber-physical swarms represent a paradigm shift in distributed systems, mirroring characteristics akin to natural swarms, such as self-organization, scalability, and fault tolerance. this paper delves into these complex systems, characterized by vast networks of cyber-physical entities with limited environmental awareness, yet capable of exhibiting emergent collective behaviors. these systems encompass a diverse array of scenarios, ranging from swarm robotics to the interconnectivity in smart cities, as well as the collaboration among augmented humans. the engineering of such systems presents unique challenges, primarily due to their intricate complexity and the spontaneous nature of their collective behaviors. this paper aims to dissect these challenges, offering a clear delineation of potential approaches. We present a comprehensive analysis, shedding light on the intricacies of engineering cyberphysical swarms and discussing modern solutions in engineering collective applications for such systems.
