A recent trend in modern high-performance computing environments is the introduction of accelerators such as GPU and Xeon Phi, i.e. specialized computing devices that are optimized for highly parallel applications and coexist with CPUs. In regular compute-intensive applications with predictable data access patterns, these devices often outperform traditional CPUs by far and thus relegate them to pure control functions instead of computations. For irregular applications however, the gap in relative performance can be much smaller, and sometimes even reversed. thus, maximizing overall performance in such systems requires that full use of all available computational resources is made. In this paper we study the attainable performance of the cell-centered finite volume method on 3D unstructured tetrahedral meshes using heterogeneous systems consisting of CPUs and multiple GPUs. Finite volume methods are widely used numerical strategies for solving partial differential equations. the advantages of using finite volumes include built-in support for conservation laws and suitability for unstructured meshes. Our focus lies in demonstrating how a workload distribution that maximizes overall performance can be derived from the actual performance attained by the different computing devices in the heterogeneous environment. We also highlight the dual role of partitioning software in reordering and partitioning the input mesh, thus giving rise to a new combined approach to partitioning.

We are developing a task parallel script language MegaScript for parallel processing on large-scale widely-distributed environments. To achieve high performance, MegaScript requires a scheme that efficiently schedules dependent tasks to be executed on a heterogeneous environment. However, the scheduling overhead of existing static schemes are too large while dependency among tasks reduces efficiency of simple dynamic scheduling schemes. therefore, we propose a combination of multiple schemes to have an efficient hybrid scheduling scheme. To reduce the overhead of static scheduling, we use multi-layered schedulers: the upper layer makes rough global scheduling, and the lower layer makes precise local scheduling. We also incorporate a dynamic scheduler into our scheduler to cope with dynamic change of the system performance. the evaluation using abstract simulation exhibited 6.9-9.8 times speed-up and good scalability, compared to a single level static scheduler.

State space explosion is the main challenge in model checking problems. On-the-fly verification, partial order reduction and stuttering equivalence are the three major solutions for this problem, which have drawn a lot of attention. While most researches work with sequential algorithms, for which their performance is also restricted by the size of state space. As the algorithms for model checking problems can always be regarded as the graph exploration or matrix operations, utilizing parallel computing to deal with the model checking problems has been a significant topic. It can benefit from the high computation capability and high memory size of different parallel and distributed platforms, e.g., multi-core CPU, many-core GPU, cluster and cloud. However, we should face several challenges to integrate parallel computing into model checking area: 1) the construction of the high efficiency data structure for system models to save memory cost and being efficient for parallel accessing. 2) the development of efficient execution model with high computation locality. For property verification, it is necessary to verify the correctness of the parallel and distributed property verification process. 3) the implementations should follow the up-to-date features of different platforms. Our researches are to build approaches to deal with several model checking problems with parallel computing in multi-core and many-core platforms, which involves how to fight for the challenges.

the parallel multigrid method is expected to play an important role in large-scale scientific computing on post-peta/exa-scale supercomputer systems, and it also includes serial and parallel communication processes which are generally expensive. In the present work, new format for sparse matrix storage based on sliced Ellpack-Itpack (ELL) format is proposed for optimization of serial communication in data transfer through memories, and hierarchical coarse grid aggregation (hCGA) is introduced for optimization of parallel communication by message passing. the proposed methods are implemented for pGW3D-FVM, a parallel code for 3D groundwater flow simulations using the multigrid method, and the robustness and performance of the code was evaluated on up to 4,096 nodes (65,536 cores) of the Fujistu FX10 supercomputer system at the University of Tokyo. the parallel multigrid solver using the sliced ELL format provided performance improvement in both weak scaling (25%-31%) and strong scaling (9%-22%) compared to the code using the original ELL format. Moreover, hCGA provided excellent performance improvement in both weak scaling (1.61 times) and strong scaling (6.27 times) for flat MPI parallel programming model.

Collaborative commerce and design environment is characterized by of its numerous users, massive resources and dynamic change. In order to solve security problems coming from multi-domain, heterogeneity and dynamics, the security architecture for collaborative commerce and design environment was constructed throuth adoptting Internet Protocol Security(IPSec), Secure Socket Layer(SSL), Simple Object Access Protocol Security(SOAPSec). the enabling technologies including IPSec-based Virtual Private Net(VPN), secure e-commence and cooperation framework, digital authentication and encryption of data were discussed in detail. the architecture and the enabling technologies provided the security mechanism amongst the partners to realize business collaboration, design collaboration in network business pattern.

this paper presents a distributed learning approach designed to assist physicians in diagnosing diseases based on a patient's current health status, clinical history, and test results. the methodology relies on neural network models and supervised classifiers to identify illnesses. It utilizes word embedding to capture semantic relationships among hospital admissions, symptoms, and diagnoses. Additionally, it introduces a method to evaluate the connection between different diagnoses based on symptom similarity, aiding in prediction tasks. Experimental results on a real-world Electronic Health Records (EHR) dataset showcase the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed technique, providing clinically relevant interpretations. these findings suggest promising avenues for future enhancements of the framework as a valuable diagnostic tool.

the EU-funded XtreemOS project implements a Linux-based grid operating system (OS), exploiting resources of virtual organizations through the standard POSIX interface. the Object Sharing Service (OSS) of XtreemOS addresses the challenges of transparent data sharing for distributed applications running in grids. We focus on the problem of handling consistency of replicated data in wide area networks in the presence of failures. the software architecture we propose interweaves concepts from transactional memory and peer-to-peer systems. Speculative transactions relieve programmers from complicated lock management. Super-peer-based overlay networks improve scalability and distributed hash tables speed up data search. OSS replicates objects to improve reliability and performance. In case of severe faults, the XtreemOS grid checkpointing service will support OSS. In this paper we describe the software architecture of OSS, design decisions, and evaluation results of preliminary experiments with a multi-user 3D virtual world.

Known parallel DBMS offer at present only static partitioning schemes. Adding a storage node is a cumbersome operation that typically requires the manual data redistribution We present an architecture termed AMOS-SDDS for a share-nothing multicomputer. We have coupled a High-performance main-memory DBMS AMOS-II and a manager of Scalable distributed Data Structures (SDDS) into a scalable distributed system SDDS provides the scalable data partitioning in distributed RAM, supporting parallel scans with function shipping. AMOS-SDDS couples both systems using the AMOS-II foreign function interface Its scalability abolishes the cumbersome storage limits of a single site RAM DBMS technology. Its distributed RAM query processing and scalable data partitioning is an improvement over the current parallel DBMSs technology. We validate AMOS-SDDS architecture by experiments with distributed nested loop join queries over a file scaling up to 300.000 tuples. It indudes performance study of speed-up and scale-up characteristics. the results encourage the we of SDDS for high-performance database systems. © (2001) by the international Society for Computers and their Applications All rights reserved.

IoT smart applications must deal with the inherently distributed nature of IoT infrastructures that may vary among different deployments. For example, in urban environments, some deployments may require distributed edge nodes to support the sensors and actuators, while others may skip this processing stage and go directly to the cloud. We propose the concept of an IoT computing Continuum, or IoTinuum, with multiple computing stages spread over the distributed IoT infrastructure. We present the modeling and implementation of two urban use cases for a 6-stage IoTinuum: smart drone delivery and smart structural monitoring. In our experience, the IoTinuum improves the understanding of function placement in application development and reveals important performance tradeoffs.

On petascale systems, the selection of optimal values for I/O parameters without taking into account the I/O size and pattern can cause the I/O time to dominate the simulation time, compromising the application's scalability. In this paper, we adopt and adapt an engineering method called surrogate-based modeling to efficiently search for the optimal I/O parameter values and accurately predict the associated I/O times at the extreme scale. Our approach allows us to address both the search and prediction in a short time, even when the application's I/O is large and exhibits irregular patterns.
