this paper researches material agencies, mechanical systems and facade designs that are able to respond to environmental changes through local interactions, inspired by biological systems. these are based on a model of distributed intelligence founded on plants and animal collectives, from which intelligent behavior emerges through simple local associations. Biological collective systems integrate material form and responsiveness and have the potential to inform new architectural and engineering strategies. the design approach of this research is based on a data-driven methodology spanning from design inception to simulation and physical modeling. Data-driven models, common in the fields of natural science, offer a method to generate and test a multiplicity of responsive solutions. the driving concepts are three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. the proposed facade system is a responsive textile shading structure which uses integrated actuators that moderate their local environments through simple interactions with their immediate neighbors. Computational techniques coupled to material logics create an integral design framework leading to heterogeneous environmental and structural conditions, producing local responses to environmental stimuli and ultimately effective performance of the whole system.

Replication is used in data grids to improve the efficiency of user requests. One or more copies of files are stored on storage components, replicas, in the data grid. Currently, users send their requests directly to these replicas. there is no control over a request once it leaves the user. the focus of this paper is controlling workload traffic at data grid replicas, by managing the flow of requests to each replica. We propose the creation of a replica traffic manager that controls workload traffic sent to the individual replicas in the data grid. the traffic manager receives all user requests and manages the traffic for all replicas, by maintaining a certain number of outstanding requests at each replica. When a particular replica is heavily loaded, all incoming requests for that replica would be held in queue at the traffic manager and/or directed to another replica. Once the traffic decreases at the replicas, the queued requests would be immediately forwarded. By limiting the traffic to each replica, the traffic manager has more control over the system than otherwise possible with individual users submitting requests directly to the replicas. In our evaluations, we observe that our replica traffic manager has a significant and beneficial effect on the performance of the data grid. It provides reliable and consistent response times for user requests. In addition, the traffic manager can adjust for overloaded or failing replicas, while ensuring a starvation free environment that provides dynamic load balancing. © 20th international conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing systems, PDCS 2007. For a number of years, software design has featured methods of software engineering. Object-oriented modelling (OOM) is a new and very promising method for the professional production of software. this paper aims to contribute to the application of the OOM in planning and deals with the implementation of controls for flexible automated material flow systems. the method of application of the OOM to the design of automatic systems is systematically approached. the introduction provides an overview of the planning process and the history of modelling methods. this is followed by a demonstration of how OOM and its components, 'object-oriented analysis', 'design' and 'programming', can contribute to the handling of the complex demands of a flexible material flow system (I. In this paper, based on Smart Card Data (SCD), bus stations data and bus lines data, we present an interactive system to visually analyze the urban passenger flow. these knowledge derived from our system can help users perceive the possible traffic congestion. It is different from the previous studies which focus on detecting congestion based on car speed. Our visual analysis work consists of two phases. the first phase is preprocessing, in which we develop strategies to clean the SCD and aggregate it with the other input data to derive passenger flow information in spatial-temporal space. the second phase is visual exploration, in which we make exploration and analysis in several views of multiple levels. Firstly, we explore the passenger flow of road segments in city level;secondly, we explore the passenger flow of bus stations within a whole day in bus line level and bus station level;thirdly, we analyze the travel patterns of passengers. Case studies with the SCD collected in Beijing On August 7, 2015 demonstrate the effectiveness of our system. © 2016 IEEE.

Automated security is one of the major concerns in modern time where secure and reliable authentication is in great demand. However, traditional authentication methods such as password and smart card are now outdated because they can be lost, stolen and shared. In this project, biometric system based on heartbeat signals which is also known as Electrocardiographic (ECG) signals is proposed. Heartbeat is chosen as modality due to an individual's ECG signals cannot be faked. Compared to fingerprint it can be fooled with fake fingers, face can be extracted using user's photo and voice can be imitated conveniently. As ECG signals are reflection of the mechanical movement of the heart, these features contain unique physiological information which make them a promising authentication technology. In this study, we develop a portable ECG detection kit for data acquisition. the prototype has successfully tested as a wearable bracelet heartbeat detection for personal system log in. For the software part, wavelet transform algorithm is used as feature extraction technique while for the classification process Support Vector Machine (SVM) is employed. Consequently, the whole system is then integrated on Intel Embedded N2600 Processor with Altera Cyclone IV FPGA Board (DE2-150) as biometric system. Experiment results showed that 2.0069% of EER performance has been achieved, thus this shows that the developed prototype can be a promising modality for biometric system. (C) 2015 the Authors. Nowadays, more and more public health care information is being stored and transferred on Internet and mobile devices. However in developing countries, there are many rural residents could not afford the cost for commercial network. To solve the problem of being lack of a cheap and stable communication infrastructure directly between hospital servers and rural village residents' cell-phones, this system managed to leverage mobile P2P and social network to build the health care information system. Based on the open-source P2P framework Alljoyn, social network engine Elgg (and Elgg Mobile), and distributed system HBase/Hadoop, we implemented HealthSocialNet, which focuses on immunization and antenatal care with high electrical efficiency and scalability. this research on health care social network system could help poor areas in developing countries implement and deploy a low-cost personalized health care data managing system fast.

Information extraction, and specifically event and relation extraction from text, is an important problem in the age of big data. Current solutions to these problems require large amounts of training data or extensive feature engineering to find domain-specific events. We introduce a novel Interactive Learning approach that greatly reduces the number of training examples needed and requires no feature engineering. Our method achieves event detection precision in the 80 s and 90 s with only 1 h of human supervision.

this paper describes the development of a multimedia dictionary writing system for the Czech Sign Language dictionary, prepared in cooperation of several institutions dedicated to the sign language research and study. the presented dictionary system takes the advantage of electronic format and strongly relies on the use of multimedia evidences. the dictionary system has to deal with large amount of video recordings of both a human narrator and digital avatar. Since the dictionary is prepared by several remotely located groups, the dictionary system provides support for complex publishing processes. the dictionary writing system is used in active preparation of the Czech Sign Language dictionary and already serves as a publisher for the dictionary data to the general public.

thanks to their spatially distributed sensors, Cyber-Physical system (CPS) applications are currently accumulating large amounts of heterogeneous data. When it comes to allowing several decision-makers to collaboratively plan their actions, these applications need appropriate tools for an efficient storage, analysis, and visualization of the available data. Spatial Data Warehouses (SDWs) have proven their efficiency in carrying out these operations. However, because of the increasing quantity of data, the Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) process (which is in charge of aggregating several data sources within a unified data storage repository) generally fails to update the SDW within predefined window times. In order to solve this problem, we propose in this paper to distribute the ETL tasks over a grid of computing resources. We also propose a multiagent-based approach that controls the ETL grid while allowing a convenient use of the shared resources. In addition to being the unique solution that uses grid computing for the ETL process of SDWs, our approach allows a joint use of archive and real-time data for personalized reporting and visualization of services envisioned to the decision-makers who are using the CPS application. this paper explores the design process of a social network based storage and share application in the workplace. One of the big challenges of our era is to handle the amount of data available. this may result in a high cost with additional servers to store the data and guarantee availability and reliability. We interviewed ten employees to understand better their share and storage practices in everyday life, and also identify opportunities to inspire the design of storage applications. As a result, we provided 20 recommendations to develop social network storage systems. Additionally, we created personas and scenarios inspired by interviewed participants. We envisioned how the system should work and we illustrated it by interaction cycles with a low-tech prototype. Finally, we provide lessons learned towards the design of storage and share files in the workplace leveraging the social relationship amongst co-workers.
