We present Melody Slot Machine on iPhone, an iPhone application using the melodic morphing method on the basis of the Generative Theory of Tonal Music (GTTM). We previously developed a demonstration system called Melody Slot Machine to introduce the melodic morphing method and presented it at international conferences and exhibitions. Since in-person demonstrations were reduced due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we implemented an application with the same functionality and made it available for downloading to experience it. Our Melody Slot Machine on iPhone currently has two contents available for download, and we plan to add more contents in the future.

Swarm userinterfaces (Swarm UIs) enable manipulation of user environment through the dynamic arrangement of small robots. However, the operation range of Swarm UIs are limited to a single plane due to their locomotion constraints, which are typically two-wheel-propelled. Here, We present a proof-of-concept design for swarm robots, which enables them to cooperatively transition between horizontal and vertical surfaces. Notably, this design requires only passive mechanical structure and does not rely on any powered electrical components. We demonstrate several application examples to showcase the feasibility of the robots.

Academic writing in English can be challenging for non-native English speakers (NNESs). AI-powered rewriting tools can potentially improve NNESs' writing outcomes at a low cost. However, whether and how NNESs make valid assessments of the revisions provided by these algorithmic recommendations remains unclear. We report a study where NNESs leverage an AI-powered rewriting tool, Langsmith, to polish their drafted academic essays. We examined the participants' interactions with the tool via userstudies and interviews. Our data reveal that most participants used Langsmith in combination with other tools, such as machine translation (MT), and those who used MT had different ways of understanding and evaluating Langsmith's suggestions than those who did not. Based on these findings, we assert that NNESs' quality assessment in AI-powered rewriting tools is influenced by the simultaneous use of multiple tools, offering valuable insights into the design of future rewriting tools for NNESs.

This demo presents a triangular actuating device stand that can automatically adjust the height and tilt angle of a mounted mobile device (e.g., smartphone) to adapt to the user's varying interaction needs (e.g., touch, browsing, and viewing). We employ a unique mechanism to deform the stand's triangular shape with two extendable reel actuators, which enables us to reposition the mobile screen mounted on the hypotenuse side. Each actuator is managed by the mobile device and controls the height and base of the stand's triangular shape, respectively. To demonstrate the potential of our new actuating device stand, we present two types of interaction scenarios: manual device repositioning based on the user's postures or gestures captured by the device's front camera and automatic device repositioning that adapt to the on-screen contents the user will interact with (i.e., touch-based menus, web browsers, illustrator, and video viewers).

There have been drastic changes in the storage device landscape recently. At the center of the diverse storage landscape lies the NVMe interface, which allows high-performance and flexible communication models required by these next-generation device types. However, its hardware-oriented definition and specification are bottlenecking the development and evaluation cycle for new revolutionary storage devices. In this paper, we present NVMeVirt, a novel approach to facilitate software-defined NVMe devices. A user can define any NVMe device type with custom features, and NVMeVirt allows it to bridge the gap between the host I/O stack and the virtual NVMe device in software. We demonstrate the advantages and features of NVMeVirt by realizing various storage types and configurations, such as conventional SSDs, low-latency high-bandwidth NVM SSDs, zoned namespace SSDs, and key-value SSDs with the support of PCI peer-to-peer DMA and NVMe-oF target offloading. We also make cases for storage research with NVMeVirt, such as studying the performance characteristics of database engines and extending the NVMe specification for the improved key-value SSD performance.
