We investigate the performance improvement of a multithreaded MPEG-4 video encoder executing on a configurable, extensible, SoC multiprocessor. Architecture-level results indicate a significant reduction in the dynamic instruction count of the order of 83% for 16 processor contexts compared to the original single-thread implementation. We extended an open-source 32-bit RISC CPU to include hardware-based multi-processing primitives and associated support state and implemented a parametric, bus-based SoC multiprocessor as the target platform for the threaded video encoder.

Currently, wildfire spread modeling has drawn a lot of attention from the research community since many countries are suffering from severe socioeconomic impacts of wildfires, every year. Fire spread modeling is a key requirement for effective fire management to deploy fire control equipment and forces at the right time and locations, and plan timely evacuations of residential areas. This paper proposes a new data-driven model for fire expansion which uses reference-based image segmentation for vegetation density estimation and incorporates it into the fire heat conduction modeling. Compared with the conventional parameter collection methods at fire scenes, our method relies on topview images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles, which provides significant advantages of flexibility, safety, low cost, and convenience. Our low-complexity and probabilistic model incorporates the terrain slope, vegetation density, and wind factors with adjustable model parameters which can be easily learned from experiments. The proposed model is flexible and applicable to forests with mixed vegetation and different geographical and climate conditions. We evaluate the fire propagation model by comparing the results with the propagation data available for California Rim fire in 2013.

Interaction experience in multimedia systems can be improved by adding personalization. Current applications for building and animating characters to represent real users are typically based on pose and motion detection. For so doing, computer vision algorithms do not exploit the anatomical characteristics of the human body for improving their classification accuracy. This work presents an strategy that considers age-group, body shape and height estimation by using anatomical low level descriptors. The proposed strategy allows to differentiate children from adults, and under-weighted and normal body shaped from over-weighted individuals, based on a set of features extracted from full body images and a classification process based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). These classification models were evaluated using a 10-fold cross validation, obtaining an area under the ROC curve of 89 % and 92 % respectively for age-group and body shape. On the other hand, the height of a person was computed by using a reference image in a leave-one-out evaluation and, in comparison with the real one, an square error (MSE) of 17 cm was obtained.
