Reprogramming is an essential service for wireless sensor networks. Authenticating reprogramming process is important as sensors need to verify that the code image is truly from a trusted source. There are two ways to achieve authentication: public key based and symmetric key based. Although previous work has shown that public key authentication is feasible on sensor nodes if used sparingly, it is still quite expensive compared to symmetric key based approach. In this paper, we propose a symmetric key based protocol for authenticating reprogramming process. Our protocol is based on the secret instantiation algorithm from [5, 11], which requires only O(log n) keys to be maintained at each sensor. We integrate this algorithm with the existing reprogramming protocol. Through simulation, we show that it is able to authenticate reprogramming process at very low communication cost, and has very short delay. ©2007 IEEE.

We investigate the performance improvement of a multithreaded MPEG-4 video encoder executing on a configurable, extensible, SoC multiprocessor. Architecture-level results indicate a significant reduction in the dynamic instruction count of the order of 83% for 16 processor contexts compared to the original single-thread implementation. We extended an open-source 32-bit RISC CPU to include hardware-based multi-processing primitives and associated support state and implemented a parametric, bus-based SoC multiprocessor as the target platform for the threaded video encoder.

Currently, wildfire spread modeling has drawn a lot of attention from the research community since many countries are suffering from severe socioeconomic impacts of wildfires, every year. Fire spread modeling is a key requirement for effective fire management to deploy fire control equipment and forces at the right time and locations, and plan timely evacuations of residential areas. This paper proposes a new data-driven model for fire expansion which uses reference-based image segmentation for vegetation density estimation and incorporates it into the fire heat conduction modeling. Compared with the conventional parameter collection methods at fire scenes, our method relies on topview images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles, which provides significant advantages of flexibility, safety, low cost, and convenience. Our low-complexity and probabilistic model incorporates the terrain slope, vegetation density, and wind factors with adjustable model parameters which can be easily learned from experiments. The proposed model is flexible and applicable to forests with mixed vegetation and different geographical and climate conditions. We evaluate the fire propagation model by comparing the results with the propagation data available for California Rim fire in 2013.

NFS is considered to be the bottleneck in cluster computing environment because of its limited resources and centralized data management. With the development of hardware, NFS server has more than one I/O channel, more storage space and more powerful CPU. In this paper, we describe the design and the implementation of a new logical file system called United-FS*. It can make storage devices connected to multiple I/O channels work concurrently and cooperatively. It can be exported by NFS server to provide a single file system image to clients by hiding a variety of native file systems built on different type of storage devices. This paper also compares the United-FS with the Software RAID system both from theoretical analysis and experiments. The results show that United-FS is much more flexible and its performance is better than Software RAID in most cases. © 2007 IEEE.

Interaction experience in multimedia systems can be improved by adding personalization. Current applications for building and animating characters to represent real users are typically based on pose and motion detection. For so doing, computer vision algorithms do not exploit the anatomical characteristics of the human body for improving their classification accuracy. This work presents an strategy that considers age-group, body shape and height estimation by using anatomical low level descriptors. The proposed strategy allows to differentiate children from adults, and under-weighted and normal body shaped from over-weighted individuals, based on a set of features extracted from full body images and a classification process based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). These classification models were evaluated using a 10-fold cross validation, obtaining an area under the ROC curve of 89 % and 92 % respectively for age-group and body shape. On the other hand, the height of a person was computed by using a reference image in a leave-one-out evaluation and, in comparison with the real one, an square error (MSE) of 17 cm was obtained.

In message-passing parallel applications, messages are not delivered in a strict order. In most applications, the computation results and the set of messages produced during the execution should be the same for all distinct orderings of messages delivery. Finding an ordering that produces a different outcome then reveals a message race. Assuming that the Partial Order Execution Graph (POEG) capturing the causality between events is known for a reference execution, the present paper describes techniques for identifying independent sets of messages and within each set equivalent message orderings. Orderings of messages belonging to different sets may then be reexecuted independently from each other, thereby reducing the number of orderings that must be tested to detect message races. We integrated the presented techniques into the Dynamic Parallel Schedules parallelization framework, and applied our approach on an image processing, a linear algebra, and a neighborhood-dependent parallel computation. In all cases, the number of possible orderings is reduced by several orders of magnitudes. In order to further reduce this number, we describe an algorithm that generates a subset of orderings that are likely to reveal existing message races. © 2007 IEEE.

Aiming at the problem of two-dimensional size measurement of objects, in this paper, an image-based measurement model with a reference object is first proposed. The bounding boxes of the target objects and the reference are obtained through image processing technology which give the lengths of edges in pixel of objects. The reference object with known length of the edge is used to calculate the pixel unit, the actual size of a pixel and then the size of the target objects are obtained accordingly. Further, a correction model with four small reference objects is proposed to improve the measurement precision. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed models. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper describes several system-level interconnection strategies for a coarse-grained reconfigurable fabric designed for low-energy hardware acceleration. A small, representative sub-graph for signal and image processing applications is used to predict the success of mapping larger applications onto the fabric device with these different interconnection strategies, which include 32:1, 8:1, 5:1, 4:1, 3553:1 (3:1, 5:1, 5:1, 3:1) and 355:1 (3:1, 5:1, 5:1) cardinalities. Three mapping techniques are presented and used to complete mappings onto several of these fabric instances including a mixed integer linear programming technique, a constraint programming approach, and a greedy heuristic. We present results for area (in number of required rows), power, delay, and energy as well as run times for mapping a set of signal and image processing benchmarks onto each of these interconnects. Our results indicate that the 5:1 interconnect provides the best overall results and does not require any additional hardware resources than the baseline 4:1 technique. When compared with other implementation strategies, the re configurable fabric energy consumption, using 5:1-based interconnect, is within 5-10X of a direct ASIC implementation, is 10X better than an Virtex II Pro FPGA and is 100X better than an Intel XScale processor. © 2007 IEEE.

Online Social Networks emerged at the beginning of 21st century and give us evidence that they are going to have a long life. Almost two-thirds of overall social media users affirm an everyday usage of a social media website and, therefore, the data volume across this platforms is huge. Natural language processing of social media texts is an attractive topic among researchers of this area. While there are many studies about natural language processing of social media texts for some languages (e.g., English), the researches for brazilian Portuguese language are still limited. Then, in this paper, a methodology is proposed to deal with peculiarities of the brazilian Portuguese language in informal, short and noisy texts, where the lack of context poses obstacles in text mining. The proposed methodology has been evaluated in two tasks (Text Categorization and Opinion Mining) and experiments showed that the preprocessing mechanisms included in this methodology were important to achieve better results. © 2016 ACM.
