Rapid increase of computational performance of personal computers has enabled employment of automatic hardness measurement in the last decade. It reduces the human factor in measurement and speeds up the measurement process. On the other hand, the automatic measurement often fails, when the specimen surface is not well prepared. Robust image processing algorithm is crucial for the automatic hardness measurement. The article introduces a combination of an advanced image processing technique called Active Shape Modeling (ASM) and a sophisticated model estimation technique called Particle Filtering (PF). It enables measurement of rough polished specimens and minimizes the effect of specimen surface properties.

The quality of the input fingerprint has a big impact on the performance of the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). So, the fingerprint enhancement is an important and necessary step to refine the quality of images. Over the past few years, fingerprint enhancement approaches have been proposed to investigate and test technologies in an attempt to find improvements. One of the most common methods in the literature to achieve that is the convolution with Gabor filters. By using coherent parameters and successive iterations, it is possible to highlight clearly the lines present in the images. This paper analyzes and presents improvements in a renowned algorithm that uses a contextual iterative filtering. Experimental results show that the proposed upgrades developed in this research obtained gains of 21% over the baseline.

As computer performance advances and deep learning models proliferate, their applications expand, but concerns arise due to their opaque nature and security issues. Edge intelligence requires more from these models but faces limitations like insufficient computing power and memory. Existing research on model compression mainly focuses on the trade-off between compression and accuracy, neglecting deployment at the edge and its impact on factors beyond accuracy. Furthermore, evaluation methods for model performance and robustness in compression techniques are underdeveloped. To address these issues, this paper introduces a comprehensive framework for evaluating edge intelligence deep learning models. It conducts a thorough assessment of these models on common image classification datasets, comparing their performance with three compression algorithms and analyzing their security implications. The proposed framework aims to provide a holistic assessment of deep learning models, promoting trustworthy edge intelligence, enabling secure deployments, and enhancing understanding of model decision-making processes. © 2023 IEEE.

Machine vision performs an important role in many applications, including robotics. Combined with classical instrumentation, welding robots can use a camera to perceive the scene and take a decision. A camera attached to the robot body and machine vision system work as the eyes of the robot during the welding process. However, image-based systems are susceptible to the interference of fumes, sparks, dust, and artifacts generated as a side effect of the welding process. Fume can adhere to the lenses and degrades the image, introducing a negative impact on the processing pipeline. This paper proposes a novel image fusion based algorithm that minimizes the effects caused by the fume adhered to the camera lens. Results show the proposed method is able to enhance the overall image quality, outperforming classical alternatives for similar problems.

The large variety of medical image modalities (e.g. Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Positron Emission Tomography) acquired from the same body region of a patient together with recent advances in computer architectures with faster and larger CPUs and GPUs allows a new, exciting, and unexplored world for image registration area. A precise and accurate registration of images makes possible understanding the etiology of diseases, improving surgery planning and execution, detecting otherwise unnoticed health problem signals, and mapping functionalities of the brain. The goal of this paper is to present a review of the state-of-the-art in medical image registration starting from the preprocessing steps, covering the most popular methodologies of the literature and finish with the more recent advances and perspectives from the application of Deep Learning architectures.

The recent advances in cloud services enable an increasing number of applications to offload their intensive tasks to remote computers. Cloud rendering comprises a set of services capable of rendering a 3D scene on a remote workstation. Notable progress in this field has been made by cloud gaming services. However, a gap remains between existing cloud rendering systems and other graphics-intensive applications, such as visualization of computer-Aided Design (CAD) models. Existing cloud gaming services are not suitable to efficiently render these particular 3D scenes. CAD models contain many more objects than a regular game scene, requiring specific assumptions and optimizations to deliver an interactive user experience. In this work, we discuss and propose a novel hybrid cloud rendering system for massive 3D CAD models of industrial plants. The obtained results show that our technique can achieve high frame rates with satisfactory image quality even in a constrained environment, such as a high latency network or obsolete computer hardware.

image retrieval as an essential task in computer vision aims to search images to match a given query image, which could be solved with a two-stage model: retrieving a series of candidate images with a global image descriptor;re-ranking the nearest images with local descriptors. Recent study indicates that Transformer technique could reduce the number of local descriptors for the re-ranking process, and enable the model to be in parallel. However, there still exist some problems: different input orders of an image pair will produce different outputs (non-symmetric);the mean aggregation module fails to find out the difference between two images. To this end, we propose a twin branch Transformers-based re-ranking approach (TBT-RR). Specifically, we utilize a cross-attention module with shared weights and segment embeddings to make the model symmetrical. Then, we design a learnable aggregation module to adaptively take the average or difference between two images, so that local descriptors could quickly reach an agreement on whether the two images are matched. To output similarity scores between two images, we design a similarity estimation pipeline with a one-way cross-attention module. Finally, we train TBT-RR on the Google Landmark dataset and test it on the Revisited Oxford and Revisited Paris datasets. The experimental results show that the retrieval results of TBT-RR outperform previous re-ranking approaches. Besides, with less memory usage and parameter scale, TBT-RR has 50% increase in the retrieval speed and 40% reduction in the computational complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

Physically-based rendering systems use proprietary scene description formats. Thus, by selecting a given renderer for the development of a new technique, one is often constrained to test and demonstrate it on the limited set of test scenes available for that particular renderer. This makes it difficult to compare techniques implemented on different systems. We present a solution for automatic conversion among scene description formats used by physically-based rendering systems. It enables algorithms implemented on different renderers to be tested on the same scene, providing better means of assessing their strengths and limitations. Our system can be integrated with development and benchmarking APIs, lending to full orthogonality among algorithms, rendering systems, and scene files.

Lighting intentions are the goals and constraints that designers like to achieve in a lighting design process. In this context, rendering problems are the kind of problems based on the rendering equation that are proposed to satisfy a set of lighting intentions. These problems are usually expressed as optimization problems. In this article is presented a novel method based on photon tracing, the VNS optimization metaheuristic, and the determination of the number of photons needed, which allows to handle a wider variety of lighting intentions without incurring in high computational costs. Moreover, the method developed shows to be efficient when the geometry is also a variable in the rendering problem. The techniques explained here could be included in a package used by architects or designers to aid in the lighting design process of architectural environments.

structured lighting (SL) image processing relies on the generation of known illumination patterns synchronized with the camera frame rate and is commonly implemented using syncing capable cameras. In general, such cameras employ global shutters, that exposes the whole frame at once. However, most modern digital cameras use rolling shutters, which expose each line at different intervals, impairing most structured lighting applications. In this paper we introduce an asynchronous SL technique that can be used by any rolling shutter digital camera. While the use of stroboscopic illumination partially solves for the line exposure shift, the phase difference between the camera and lighting clocks results in stripe artifacts that move vertically in the video stream. These stripes are detected and tracked using a Kalman filter. Two asynchronous stroboscopic SL methods are proposed. The first method, image differencing, minimizes the stripe artifacts. The second method, image compositing, completely removes the artifacts. We demonstrate the use of the asynchronous differential lighting technique in a pupil detector using a low-cost high-speed camera with no synchronization means, with the lighting running independently at a higher, unknown frequency to the application.
