In recent years the work on vector field visualization has been concentrated on LIC-based methods. In this paper we propose an alternative solution for the visualization of unsteady flow fields. Our approach is based on the computation of temporal series of correlated images. While other methods are based on pathlines and try to correlate successive images at the pixel level, our approach consists in correlating instantaneous visualizations of the vector field at the streamline level. For each frame a feed forward algorithm computes a set of evenly-spaced streamlines as a function of the streamlines generated for the previous frame. This is achieved by establishing a correspondence between streamlines at successive time steps. A cyclical texture is mapped onto every streamline and textures of corresponding streamlines at different time steps are correlated together so that, during the animation, they move along the streamlines, giving the illusion that the flow is moving in the direction defined by the streamline. Our method gives full control on the image density so that we are able to produce smooth animations of arbitrary density, covering the field of representatives from sparse, that is classical streamline-based images, to dense, that is texture-like images.

A software package of carrying out the whole NOAA AVHRR data processing chain has been developed. This includes image data extraction, radiometric calibration and geometric corrections. The software supports three different raw file formats. Radiometric corrections include both atmospheric- and BRDF-corrections. Geometric corrections are carried out automatically to sub pixel accuracy.

One of the problems in the thematic interpretation of the remote sensor (RS) data is the processing of the sets of multispectral, multydate images. The problem is that when we try to compare two and more RS image, we have to rectify their geometry and correct atmospheric effects. While the geometric correction could be done with any precision, the atmospheric correction for a set of images is a very complex task, and it could not be solved in a common case. We propose a new approach, based on the artificial neural networks, for a stable RS images classification and interpretation without the atmospheric correction. That approach, using the Kohonen's Self-Organized Maps (SOM), has been realized as a part of the ScanEx imageprocessing technology in a computer program NeRIS (Neural Raster Interpretation System). The Sammon's mapping of that SOM classification from the p-dimensional input image space to the 2-dimensional points on a plane (whereby the distances between the mapped vectors tend to approximate to distances of the input vectors), was used for hierarchical classification and stable thematic interpretation of the RS images.

An ultra-higher-valued logic network, called a set logic network, is proposed to provide a potential solution to the interconnection problems in VLSI systems. The basic concept is frequency multiplexing of logic values for the increase of information density in logic networks. It is shown that the set logic network can be constructed with only two basic building blocks realized by frequency-selective analog circuits. Its application to a parallel image processor is discussed based on functional multiplexing of binary modules into a single set logic module. A great reduction of interconnections can be achieved by using an optimal multiplexing scheme.

The concept of canonical multiple-valued input generalized Reed-Muller forms (MIGRM), a direct extension of the well-known generalized Reed-Muller (GRM) forms for the logic with multiple-valued inputs, is introduced. Code normalization of single multiple-valued literals to perform a final transformation is developed. The code normalization is used to make the transformation of the complete function independent on the polarity chosen. This simplifies and speeds up the main transformation step to the final restricted MIGRM form for the transformed single MV-literal. A computer program to realize the MIGRM transform for Boolean functions has been implemented. The direct circuit realization of MIGRMs as AND- EXOR programmable logic arrays with input decoders has excellent testability properties;they have applications to synthesis of other kinds of circuits with EXOR gates, such as the exclusive sums of products (ESOP), and they have imageprocessing capabilities.

The author describes an easy-to-use algorithm to translate rastered information into a data set of vectors, using a nonmodified personal computer. Using this data set, automated generalization techniques were developed to reduce the large amount of time needed to edit interactively this kind of data. An attempt was also made to realize automated editing of lines, removal of gaps and nonexistant connections, pattern detection, and interpretation.
