Computed tomography (CT) images are becoming an invaluable mean for abdominal organ investigation. In the field of medical image processing, some of the current interests are the automatic diagnosis of liver, spleen, and kidney pathologies and the 3D volume rendering of the abdominal organs. The first and fundamental step in all these studies is the automatic organs segmentation, that is still an open problem. In this paper we propose a fully automatic gray level based segmentation framework that employs a fast marching technique;the proposed segmentation scheme is general, and employs only established and not critical anatomical knowledge. For this reason, it can be easily adapted to separately segment different abdominal organs, by overcoming problems due to the high inter and intra patient gray level and shape variabilities;the extracted volumes are then combined to achieve robust results. The system performance has been evaluated on the data of 40 patients, by comparing the automatically detected organ volumes to the organ boundaries manually traced by three experts. The good quality of the achieved results is proved by the fact that they are comparable to the inter and intra personal variability of the manual segmentation produced by experts.

Hoarding behaviour is a widespread issue in which people have difficulty discarding or parting with their possessions. We present our work to address hoarding behaviours in people and promote the selling or donating of items that they no longer use or value through an online marketplace application (app). We introduce DeclutterAR, a feature linked to the marketplace app that uses Diminished Reality to remove real-world objects in the Augmented Reality (AR) scene, allowing you to visualise your "cluttered spaces" as "decluttered spaces". DeclutterAR also allows users to sort removed objects to sell or give away. This work describes the system implementation and preliminary user study and discusses concepts of using Diminished Reality to motivate and support users in visualising target behaviours.

Histological image analysis through systems to aid diagnosis plays an important role in medicine with supplementary reading for the specialist's diagnosis. This work proposes a method based on the association of extracted features by fractal techniques, regularization and polynomial classifier. The feature vectors were classified by applying the cross-validation technique with 10 folds. The evaluation of the results occurred through metrics such as accuracy (ACC) and imbalance accuracy metric (IAM). The proposed approach achieved significant results for all metrics with non-Hodgkin lymphoma lesion sets. The proposed approach provided values around 0.97 of IAM and 99% of ACC for investigated groups. These results are considered relevant to studies in the literature and the association of Hermite polynomial and regularization can contribute to the detection of the lesions by supporting specialists in clinical practices.

Today's system management tools focus on a computer as a visible enclosure of both computational resources (CPU and memory) and the functionality and data that reside in the storage subsystem. Recent technological trends, such as shared SAN or NAS storage and virtualization, have the potential to break this tight association between functionality and machines. We describe the design and implementation of ENCOMPASS - an image management system centered around a shared storage repository of "master system images", each representing different functionality. The functionality is provisioned by "cloning" master images, associating the resulting "clone images" with specified physical and/or virtual resources ("machines"), customizing the clone images for the specific environment and circumstances, and automatically performing the necessary operations to activate the clones. "Machines" - physical or virtual - are merely computational resources that do not have any permanent association with functionality. ENCOMPASS supports the complete lifecycle of a system image, including reallocation and re-targeting of resources, maintenance, updates, etc. It separates image creation from image management from resource allocation policies -an emerging trend that is manifested in particular by proliferation of turn-key "virtual appliances". © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a technique for the segmentation of moving objects in color image sequences. The technique is based on Beucher-Meyer paradigm, with markers detected by a morphological operator designed by computational learning (or, equivalently, statistical optimization.) Objects in some frames of the video are marked manually and used to train the markers detector. Then, the operator designed is used to mark the objects in the other frames and the paradigm is applied to all frames marked by the detector. Two real world examples illustrate the application of the proposed technique. © 2000 IEEE.

Eye Ball Tracking System is a device which is intended to assist patients that cannot perform any voluntary tasks related to daily life. Patients who only can control their eyes can still communicate with the real-world using the assistive devices like one proposed in this paper. This device provides a human computer interface in order to take decisions based on their eye movement. A real time data stream is captured via webcam that transfers data serially to MATLAB. Then a sequential image processing scheme segments the iris of the eye and calculates the centroid, thereby generating control signal with the help of a reference axis. The control signals are then used to manipulate the position of a motorized platform via USB-microcontroller interface.

An ultra-higher-valued logic network, called a set logic network, is proposed to provide a potential solution to the interconnection problems in VLSI systems. The basic concept is frequency multiplexing of logic values for the increase of information density in logic networks. It is shown that the set logic network can be constructed with only two basic building blocks realized by frequency-selective analog circuits. Its application to a parallel image processor is discussed based on functional multiplexing of binary modules into a single set logic module. A great reduction of interconnections can be achieved by using an optimal multiplexing scheme.

Modeling of 3D objects and scenes have become a common tool in different applied fields from simulationbased design in high-end engineering applications (aviation, civil structures, engine components, etc.) to entertainment (computer-based animation, video-game development, etc.). In Biology and related fields, 3D object modeling and reconstruction provide valuable tools to support the visualization, comparison and even morphometric analysis in both academical and applied tasks. Such computational tools, usually implemented as webbased virtual reality applications, significantly reduce the manipulation of fragile samples, preventing their damage and, even, their complete loss. On the other hand, they allow to take the morphological properties of physical specimens to the digital domain, giving support to common entomology tasks such as characterization, morphological taxonomy and teaching. This paper addresses the problem of producing reliable 3D point clouds from the surface of entomological specimens, based on a proved approach for multiview 3D reconstruction from high resolution pictures. Given the traditional issues of macro-photography for small sized objects (i.e. short depth of field, presence of subtle and complex structures, etc.), a pre-processing protocol, based on focus stacking, supported the generation of enhanced views obtained by an acquisition device specifically designed for this work. The proposed approach has been tested on a sample of six representative subjects from the Entomological Collection of the Centro de Biosistemas, Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Colombia). The resulting point clouds exhibit an overall good visual quality for the body structure the selected specimens, while file sizes are portable enough to support web based visualization.

image and video processing algorithms implemented in software, require most computation time when the image size is increased. Also, some algorithms must be processed at high-speed, for example the image thresholding algorithms for high throughput real-time applications. Then, in order to overcome this requirement, the algorithms must be efficiently implemented in hardware. In this paper, we present the hardware architectures for ISODATA and Otsu thresholding algorithms comparing area, latency, throughput and power consumption. The designs are described using generic structural VHDL and synthesized on the FPGA EP4CE115F29C7N. The designed architectures were verified using Signal Tap and an image acquisition system based on the D5M camera and the DE2-115 development kit of Terasic.
