image segmentation is the process of partitioning an image into segments or subsets of pixels for purposes of further analysis, such as separating the interesting objects in the foreground from the un-interesting objects in the background. In many image processing applications, the process requires a sequence of computational steps on a per pixel basis, thereby binding the performance to the size and resolution of the image. As applications require greater resolution and larger images the computational resources of this step can quickly exceed those of available CPUs, especially in the power and thermal constrained areas of consumer electronics and mobile. In this work, we use a hardware tree-based classifier to solve the image segmentation problem. The application is background removal (BGR) from depth-maps obtained from the Microsoft Kinect sensor. After the image is segmented, subsequent steps then classify the objects in the scene. The approach is flexible: to address different application domains we only need to change the trees used by the classifiers. We describe two distinct approaches and evaluate their performance using the commercial-grade testing environment used for the Microsoft Xbox gaming console.

The paper presents a software component that enables NetSolve with direct communications between servers in a non-intrusive and incremental way. Non-intrusiveness means that the software component is supplementary, working on top of the original system, which does not change at all. Increment means that the software component does not have to be installed on all computers to enable applications with the new feature. It can be done incrementally, step by step, and the new feature will be enabled in part, with the completeness dependent on how many nodes have been upgraded with the software component. The paper describes the design and implementation of the software component. The paper also reports on experiments with three typical scientific NetSolve applications having different communication structures: (i) protein tertiary structure prediction, (ii) image processing using sequential algorithms, and (iii) the matrix chain product. The presented experimental results show that the performance of these Grid applications can be easily and significantly improved by using the proposed supplementary software component. © 2007 IEEE.

Parallel processing using multiple processors is a well-established technique to accelerate many different classes of applications. However, as the density of chips increases, another technique to accelerate these applications is the use of application specific hardware processing blocks in parallel within a chip. SuperCISC hardware blocks utilize this method to accelerate scientific, signal, and image processing applications. By applying pipelining methodologies to SuperCISC functions, the effective amount of parallelism already present can be further increased. Automated register placement within a combinational dataflow graph (DFG) is governed by the desired maximum operating frequency provided as a parameter to the tool flow, as well as the results of static timing analysis of the circuit. Results presented include the design tradeoffs between increased performance, area, and energy. Additionally, benefits of pipelining compared to hardware replication as a means of achieving further parallelism is studied. © 2007 IEEE.

Asplund's metric, which is useful for pattern matching, consists in a double-sided probing, i.e. the over-graph and the sub-graph of a function are probed jointly. This paper extends the Asplund's metric we previously defined for colour and multivariate images using a marginal approach (i.e. component by component) to the first spatio-colour Asplund's metric based on the vectorial colour LIP model (LIPC). LIPC is a non-linear model with operations between colour images which are consistent with the human visual system. The defined colour metric is insensitive to lighting variations and a variant which is robust to noise is used for colour pattern matching.

computer interfaces continue using mouse and keyboard, although the form of human interaction is based primarily on exchange of audiovisual messages generated by the voice and body gestures in general. Because of the importance of gestures in human communication and the possibility for people with limited mobility of the upper limbs, this research focuses on the development of an interface to emulate the mouse and keyboard through facial gestures and head movement. The system was developed to interact with a web browser by processing and analysis of images provided by a webcam. The interface allows typing for text searching, move the mouse, click by closing one eye, open and navigate between tabs, vertical scroll, zoom, back and leave. Tests show a moving speed of cursor 411 px/s and a write speed of 3.5 characters/s, correct activation of right and left clicks 94% and 92% respectively. Finally, the survey showed a high user satisfaction while browsing on Internet.

The Web of Things is a proposal to make physical and connected devices available to be used as resources in the development of Web applications through the Web protocols and standards. On the one hand, the current Web has virtual content, which is accessed by client applications that are hosted on Web servers, but on the other hand, the physical devices are real objects that are geographically distributed and have several different ways of communication. As a result of these two before-mentioned characteristics, the physical devices would demand a larger number of Web servers. In this context, this work proposes that devices with limited memory capacity and processing power can be used as Web of Things gateways through Web protocols. Then, performance evaluation of such limited device is presented in this paper with two evaluation objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of a limited device as a Web of Things gateway;to establish the capacity of the gateway in management the access to the physical devices. © 2015 ACM.

This paper presents a methodology to represent, process and visualize large bird audio recordings. The proposed methodology is based on audio signal processing, image processing, and machine learning techniques. We evaluated the methodology in a collection of 6,856 audio recordings belonging to 560 Colombian bird species. Results show that it is possible to build a tool that help ornithologists to process and analyze large collections of bird species in and effective and efficient way.

In this paper, we propose a novel bicubic method for digital image interpolation. Since the conventional bicubic method does not consider image local features, the interpolated images obtained by the conventional bicubic method often have a blurring problem. In this paper, the proposed bicubic method adopts both the local asymmetry features and the local gradient features of an image in the interpolation processing. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain high accuracy interpolated images.

Foveation is a biologically inspired signal processing method that can substantially reduce the storage and transmission size of imagery without reducing pertinent information content. By varying the spatial resolution, information can be preserved in areas of interest while lower resolution in the periphery reduces image storage size. Herein, we present an adaptive method for adjusting the parameters of foveation to maintain correlation between a target image and an image corrupted with noise. © 2010 IEEE.

We discuss the performance of Petrobras production Kirchhoff prestack seismic migration on a cluster of 64 GPUs and 256 CPU cores. Porting and optimization of the application hot spot (98.2% of a single CPU core execution time) to a single GPU reduces total execution time by a factor of 36 on a control run. We then argue against the usual practice of porting the next hot spot (1.5% of single CPU core execution time) to the GPU. Instead, we show that cooperation of CPU and GPU reduces total execution time by a factor of 59 on the same control run. Remaining GPU idle cycles are eliminated by overloading the GPU with multiple requests originated from distinct CPU cores. However, increasing the number of CPU cores in the computation reduces the gain due to the combination of enhanced parallelism in the runs without GPUs and GPU saturation on runs with GPUs. We proceed by obtaining close to perfect speed-up on the full cluster over homogeneous load obtained by replicating control run data. To cope with the heterogeneous load of real world data we show a dynamic load balancing scheme that reduces total execution time by a factor of 20 on runs that use all GPUs and half of the cluster CPU cores with respect to runs that use all CPU cores but no GPU.
