Ball valves play a pivotal role in industrial piping systems, with their design directly influencing system safety, stability, and fluid control efficiency. The thickness of the shell is a crucial parameter for ensuring structural strength and safety. Traditionally, this parameter has been determined using empirical formulas or standard specifications based on nominal pressure, diameter, and material properties. However, these methods are based on idealized assumptions that do not account for complex working conditions such as high pressure and temperature. This can result in reduced accuracy and potential safety risks. To address this issue, this study employs the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) regression algorithm, utilizing historical data to train a machine learning model for precise ball valve design predictions. © 2024 IEEE.

We present an approach for the selection of robot grasp candidates by treating specified metrics in a probabilistic manner and maximizing the success rate through statistical optimization. Recently, progress has been made in grasping unknown objects in cluttered scenes by using deep neural networks or incorporating classifiers. Although existing methods deliver promising results, they either lack explainability or fail to account for uncertainties that accumulate over the entire system. To address this shortcoming, we optimize a ranking score based on the sensitivities of the grasp success with respect to a set of metrics. These sensitivities reflect each metric's contribution to the success. To perform this optimization, we refer to a dataset of 932 randomly selected grasps recorded under real-world conditions with the humanoid robot ARMAR-6. By validating our approach on a separate data collection of 187 physical real-world grasps, we demonstrate that our approach yields a success rate of 73.8%, amounting to an improvement of more than 40% compared to a random grasp selection. The results exemplify that sensitivity optimization, scarcely applied in the context of robotic applications so far, can significantly enhance the grasp success by considering respective metrics in the face of uncertainties.

Identifying face topology from wireframe profiles is a critical challenge in parametric CAD modeling, especially when dealing with complex wireframe models. Existing techniques often struggle with accuracy and interactive performance, particularly in disorganized wireframes with diverse curve types and complex profiles. This paper presents an Adaptive Generation of Profile (AGP) method that effectively addresses these challenges. Our solution includes three key components: first, we employ adaptive sampling to detect loop planarity and clustering techniques to identify coplanar loops, significantly reducing the search space for containment tests. Second, we introduce a rule-based reasoning approach for a containment test, which swiftly determines nesting relationships among loops. Finally, we implement a Profile Data Cache (PDC) mechanism to cache and map face structures to new entities, minimizing computational overhead. Extensive tests on various wireframe models demonstrate the robustness of our approach, showing significant improvements in both accuracy and processing speed compared to existing methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Power Distribution Network (PDN) are indispensable for modern integrated circuits (ICs), providing supply voltage and ground to transistors. However, the presence of IR-drop, caused by parasitic resistance in power network wires, can degrade circuit performance by reducing noise margins. Previous research tackled IR-drop reduction by refining PDN, but overlooked routing issues leading to circuit timing challenges. This paper proposes a novel framework addressing both concerns. Our approach enhances power network design by strategically adding power stripes to optimize circuit timing, mitigate IR-drop, and alleviate routing congestions. Experimental results demonstrate a 5.8% improvement in total negative slacks compared to the original design. © 2024 IEEE.

Traffic Assignment is a commonly used method for traffic modeling under congestion conditions. Many of the existing approaches find approximate solutions to the user equilibrium and the system optimum in terms of global travel time, though they can be computationally expensive. Previous works have shown that usage of Traffic-Weighted Multi-Maps (TWM) may help to reduce congestion in a wide range of scenarios. In this paper, we use TWM for traffic flow routing near the system optimum with an efficient computational performance. TWM is created using the k-shortest paths for the flows, and genetic algorithms are used to find the best TWM distribution for the flow paths to minimize global travel time (system optimum). The approach is illustrated with a non-trivial use case over a synthetic traffic network. Experimental results show that the TWM approach delivers efficient traffic routing, achieving low travel times under congestion conditions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With the rapid growth of transportation passenger flow in recent years, the research direction of Virtual Coupling (V C) in railways has become hot. V C increases capacity by tracking shorter distances. The traditional train emergency braking (EB) model can no longer meet the high operating efficiency requirements of VC. VC urgently needs a more efficient safety EB model. Therefore, to improve efficiency, a measurement of the EB model's rationality is defined considering safety and efficiency. Based on the defined model measurement, an EB model optimization method and a new EB model are proposed. The new model is closer to the actual braking process of the train and ensures safety from the distance level. That is, the braking trajectory of the train calculated by the new model is closer to the actual braking trajectory of the train, and the two braking trajectories satisfy the specific safety constraints. Finally, the safety and efficiency of the new model were verified through simulation experiments. The new model can avoid train collisions during the entire EB process. Experimental results show that compared with the traditional old EB model of VC based on space-time interval [1], the new model's minimum safe distance (MSD) between two VC train units can be reduced by 39%. © 2024 IEEE.

To address the major challenge of water and energy management in irrigation water pumping facilities, this paper proposes an hourly mathematical model that determines the optimal scheduling of both pumping station and irrigation demand to minimize the weekly operating costs of an irrigation system. The mathematical formulation constitutes a mixed-integer nonlinear problem subject to electrical and hydraulic constraints. This model has been tested with real data from an existing pumping station with fixed and variable-speed pumps, water storage and grid-connected photovoltaic self-consumption. The results obtained indicate that the system maximizes photovoltaic self-consumption and that the optimal irrigation scheduling to meet the required weekly demand and maintain the hourly level of the storage pond within the defined limits occurs at the hours of lowest energy cost. This optimal energy and water management strategy decreases the operating costs of pumping systems.

Aiming at the problem of increased interference of different light signals caused by the increase in the number of LEDs, the link misalignment of the underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system, and the shift and expansion of the light spot in the massive multiple in multiple out (Massive-MIMO) optical communication system, this paper uses an aspherical lens set as the receiving optical antenna to separate different beams and optimizes the lens structure to further completely separate different beams. In this paper, the Singular value decomposition based on the least-squares channel estimation (LS-SVD) precoding algorithm is used to reduce the impact of communication link misalignment on the performance of the communication system and improve the system bit error rate performance (BER). The simulation results show that the LS-SVD precoding algorithm is better than the traditional Lattice Reduction (LR) precoding algorithm, zero-forcing (ZF) detection algorithm, and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection algorithm under the condition of misalignment of the communication link in the underwater Massive-MIMO system, the LS-SVD precoding algorithm improves the BER by about an order of magnitude under the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). During off-road operations, mobile robotic platforms often encounter objects that influence the platform's route. As determining the outcome of an interaction with an object (e.g., overriding) is difficult, many robotic planners are designed to avoid interactions with all environmental objects. Yet, this object-adverse planning behavior is not reflected in the actions of expert human operators, who may interact with objects in order to find a viable path towards their goal. This work intends to emulate that human operator intuition. Our objective is to improve the performance of robotic traversals in off-road terrains through the development of a planning paradigm that allows certain safe contact with environmental objects. Specifically, we design a two-level hierarchical planning and control system which couples a contact-informed regional motion planner with contact-constrained local nonlinear trajectory optimization techniques. The approach is demonstrated for classes of vegetative objects which are characterized by existing parameterized collision models from the terramechanics community. The top level of the hierarchy combines sampling-based planning techniques with a set of override (velocity) constraints derived from these collision models during the search for a minimum-time trajectory towards the platform's goal. This minimum-time trajectory is then passed to the lower-level of the architecture, which utilizes direct collocation and model predictive control techniques to ensure that the velocity constraints are enforced during trajectory execution. The capabilities of the architecture are shown both in simulation and onboard a robotic platform, where vegetation is reasoned about and then overridden depending on the environment, platform, and object geometry. © 2024 International Society for Terrain-Vehicle systems.
