Water quality modeling of the Rio Tiete and Billings Reservoir system was performed with USEPA's QUAL2EU and master plan for Sao Paulo, Brazil. Planned wastewater collection and treatment systems (primary) throughout the system result in slightly greater overall water quality improvement than those concentrated in specific areas, such as downtown or upstream. Due to the large amount of uncollected and untreated sewage throughout the basin, either greater levels of treatment (secondary, nitrification), or instream aeration will be needed to elicit further water quality improvements throughout the system.

This paper presents an empirical data modeling approach for a class of systems called quasi-linear. In addition, state estimation based on the identified system and the design of a robust feedback controller for a complex industrial application are included. A drum boiler steam generator system is selected as a prototype example of this class of nonlinear dynamic systems to be identified and to be controlled in a deterministic and stochastic environment. Simulation results indicate that the resulting controller shows a significant improvement over existing proportional-integral (PI) control, including reduced transient response, time delay tolerance and also robustness against full load range (large steam flow changes), for different characteristics exhibited by the input (feedwater) valve. The prominent feature of this method is that no specific model information is initially required throughout the identification and control of the nonlinear plant, and hence the method is suitable for both identifying and controlling of the critical industrial processes.

A chance-constrained optimization model for designing stormwater drainage systems conditioned on the probability that the system's conveyance capacity is exceeded is presented. To formulate the chance constraint, the model combines kinematic wave routing and first-order second-moment analysis. Capable of providing the engineer with a tool to assessing the tradeoffs between system design cost and the probability of failure, the model avoids overdesigning a stormwater system by incorporating the hydrodynamic characteristics of stormwater flows through the mean and standard deviation. To demonstrate the model, an application utilizing a pipe network located in the East Campus of Duke University is presented.

In this paper we present a new approach for computer-assisted diagnosis of the orthostatic regulatory disorders of the human circulatory system. Petri nets are used as an aid for modeling and simulation of the diagnosis process. The diagnosis is based on measurements of the heart rate (HR) and of the mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) of the patient while resting and in the upright position.

A mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) approach is proposed for the design of a soil vapor extraction system (SVES), which includes the determination of extraction well locations and the corresponding pumping schedules. A k-change local search algorithm is employed in the MINLP model to avoid the pitfall of sequential decision rules in the combinatorial optimization of an SVES design. Results of the test problem indicate that the MINLP approach is computationally efficient and logically correct in the design of a multi-well SVES.

Many criteria can be used in the selection of models to be used in simulating a conjunctive use system. Generally, these criteria can be categorized into addressing one of four concerns, namely, (1) prediction accuracy;(2) model detail;(3) defendability;and (4) usability. For this type of model selection process, the rankings usually end up placing defendability and modeling detail much higher than predictive capability and usability. This would result in the models selected for simulating a conjunctive use system producing a highly detailed and defendable modelingsystem, sacrificing model usability and to some degree predictive accuracy. Use of different model selection processes could result in the changes in model selection influence factors. This in turn could lead to a completely different ranking of the final model selection criteria, and hence producing a different conjunctive use modelingsystem.

There is a growing trend in the use of the knowledge-based techniques in business and marketing decision making. Nevertheless a few investigations on the topic of marketing decision support in software industry have been reported. The goal of the present paper is to gain inside the development of a knowledge-based system for decision support in a competitive software business environment. Analysing the company's decision structure we derive a procedure for a competitive software audit and determine the use cases. A general architecture of a knowledge-based decision support system is proposed. Object modeling and problem solving methods are briefly discussed. The solution of two different decision making problems is illustrated by proper case studies.

A nonlinear multiobjective optimization model is developed for managing the conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater supplies under conditions of potential saltwater intrusion. Two conflicting management objectives are considered: cost-effective allocation of available surface water and groundwater supplies, and minimization of saltwater intrusion due to groundwater overdraft. Optimal control of the system is examined by studying the response of these objectives to changes in the magnitude of groundwater pumping, and the transfer of surface water supplies between sources and users. system constraints including economic, operational, and institutional criteria are met.

The new knee mechanism is electrically controlled and consists of a mini DC motor with gearbox, a cam and a follower. Preliminary tests with the system are positive, but they show that it should not be used without FES.
