Recently, modularity in robotics has received considerable attention. For successful implementation of such an architecture, development of user-friendly, modular software becomes crucial. In order to address this problem, a model of the modular system is needed that can: (1) represent the system with an acceptable accuracy; and (2) be easily restructured for different robot configurations. In this study, the authors develop a dynamic model for modular robots that may have flexible components. They consider that the flexible components are distributed throughout the system such that they can induce either link or joint deflections. The system model is derived in a format that readily lends itself to controller design.

In this paper we present a new methodology for modeling and analysis of faults in hybrid systems. This new methodology is targeted for use in real-time control systems. We describe a new tool which can be used to model both the plant and the computer controlling it. The modeling is performed by an extension of Petri nets called the global Petri net. This tool simulates and analyzes the entire system as a single entity. In this fashion, a single fault-detection scheme is sufficient to monitor the entire system and diagnose various forms of faults in both the computer and the plant.

An ongoing project aimed at using object oriented modeling as a complete and flexible technique to describe and analyze protocols and distributed applications is presented. In particular, a description of a specific factory communication protocol for the field applications is reported and a complete and unambiguous specification approach which ensures rapid prototyping, validation and performance evaluations is suggested. In the paper general factory communication issues are first discussed and then the object oriented approach for protocol description is considered in detail making reference to the specifications included in the SERCOS standard document as demonstrative example.

This paper presents a discrete event modeling and simulation framework for analyzing the traffic flow. The proposed framework can provide a convenient means for evaluating signal control strategies at the operation level of advanced traffic management systems and for generating the simulation-based forecasting information for advanced traveler information systems. To do this, the authors have employed the system entity structure/model base (SES/MB) framework which integrates the dynamic-based formalism of simulation with the symbolic formalism of AI. There are limited solution techniques available for resource constrained project scheduling problems with stochastic task durations. Due to computational complexity, scheduling heuristics have been found useful for large deterministic problems. In this paper, the authors demonstrate the use of a genetic algorithm to optimize over a linear combination of scheduling heuristics. A simulation model is used to evaluate the performance of each combination of the heuristics selected by the genetic algorithm, and this performance information is used by the genetic algorithm to select the next combinations to evaluate. The genetic algorithm and simulation based approach is demonstrated using a multiple resource constrained project scheduling problem with stochastic task durations.

An interpretation is discussed with regard to using fuzzy logic systems (FLSs) as system models. The development of FLSs by a pseudo-clustering technique is presented which bypasses the use of conventional clustering algorithms. This method is shown to provide reasonably good responses with very little development overhead. A second modeling technique relies on interpreting the available data itself as the FLS. These methods provide a transition between artificial neural network (ANN) realizations and classical FLSs, in that most of their computations could be performed in parallel.
