This paper considers the problem of determining the optimal distributed decision strategy for a team of decisionmakers (DMs) arranged in an arbitrary acyclic organizational structure and controlling a complex structured process. The authors present an influence diagram model of the joint task-organization system and formulate the optimal team strategy in terms of a set of coupled hypothesis testing tasks at DMs. Specifically, the authors show that the scope of a local decision task is determined by the interaction of the task structure (what can be measured) and of the information access structure (who can measure what); while the control structure (who can influence what event) has an impact on the locally perceived costs associated with the decision options available.

The paper discusses the synthesis of guidelines to establish techniques to design and develop a fuzzy logic based intelligent spacecraft control system. This fuzzy controller is a knowledge based controller that performs the closed loop operations autonomously either by supervising or replacing the conventional algorithms. It allows the representation of uncertainties of the plant, the treatment of nonlinearities and the generation of smooth control actions. The fuzzy controller can be optimized to meet a prescribed constraint criterion. Using an experienced spacecraft controller (manual) or with the use of computer optimization tools (automatic), it is possible to find the best fuzzy sets of the controller membership functions or the best rule database representing its knowledge.

A new control algorithm for bimorph mirrors is presented. The method is based on wave-front presentation by Zernike polynomials and application of a specific least square optimization technique for calculation of the control voltages. A complete control algorithm utilises the above-mentioned principles has been developed in application to bimorph deformable mirrors. The influence function matrix is calculated analytically and depends only on the electrode pattern and the set of surface-matching points and therefore, does not need to be recalculated for each surface function. The algorithm provides an accurate wave-front fitting by the deformable mirror surface in the least-square sense, and allows one to avoid the problems associated with the "one-to-one" control scheme, as it has been demonstrated by computer simulation of a bimorph mirror optical system with 11 control electrodes.

This paper deals with a computer aided management support tool developed on the basis of hierarchical production management models. Levels specific interactions and main behaviours are modelled through object oriented Petri nets (OOPNs) and computer science protocols such as communication and client/server protocols. Organisational scheme support consists of integrated levels hierarchy and is further extended to lateral co-ordination processes integrated in a pre-established hierarchy. Conception issues and further extensions concerning horizontal organisational schemes are also pointed out.

The design of graphical analogs based on ecological information processing attempts to integrate presentation requirements by providing a context in which process states are made visible to the user by inspection of the interface. The dynamics of the system are presented as transformations between process states. Both the dynamics and the state are designed to be "intuitive" with respect to the interface by choosing a display context that is consistent in structure to the underlying process and that utilizes a user's attunements to (expectations of) physical events. The user develops these expectations by virtue of their nature as physical beings in a physical world, and by interacting with objects that have physical properties. Thus an interface is intuitive if the behaviors and appearance of the objects presented are consistent with the user's expectations.

A qualitative simulation system has been developed for understanding the behavior of a system modeled by a structural model. In decision making, it is necessary to understand the influence flow, namely how the model derives the behavior of the concerning node in the model rather than the behavior of each node. This paper presents a mechanism of scenario generating for explaining the influence flow to the concerning node. The mechanism consists of the following processes: 1) by tracing the structural model, all paths from the input node, which triggers the initial change of the system, to the concerning node are derived, and using similarity of behavior, the influence flow to the concerning node is selected out of all paths; 2) important nodes are selected according to the type of nodes; and 3) the scenario document is generated along the selected flow using the sentence template and the word dictionary.

The continuous-time version of the local model network (LMN) approach of Johansen and Foss is discussed. A distinction is made between local state and global state LMNs; the former turns out to be a form of recurrent net, the latter a form of feedforward net. It is shown how local-state LMN representations of nonlinear systems can be used to design LMN-based controllers via both state observer/feedback. It is suggested that this approach provides an alternative foundation for nonlinear self-tuning control.

Economically efficient operation of electric power systems necessitates close tracking of the overall load by the system generation at all times. A wide range of methodologies and models have been developed over the years to predict the future load with reasonable accuracy and reliability. Several research groups have studied the use of artificial neural networks for this application and reported superior results compared to the conventional approaches. Application of fuzzy systems has also been proposed to include imprecise and probabilistic information in the input data. Synthesis of these two complementary technologies has emerged as a highly promising approach for electric load forecasting. This paper aims to provide an overview of the published literature on this topic, highlighting common features and drawing out some important aspects of the methodology used.

Expert systems, a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), are showing tremendous potential for application to power electronics and AC motor drive systems. The paper describes expert system-aided automated design, simulation and controller tuning of an AC motor drive system. It is an extension of earlier work that discussed the design and optimization of power converter systems. Based on the application and performance specifications from the user, the expert system selects a motor drive configuration consisting of the AC machine type, power converter and control topologies. The expert system embeds the design expertise of an experienced AC motor drive system designer to configure, design and fine-tune the AC motor drive system. Next, the expert system supervises an autonomous hybrid simulation where the controller software is fine-tuned in real-time before loading to an experimental AC motor drive system. The paper discusses the design methodology for AC motor drive systems, with particular emphasis on the configuration selection, AC motor sizing and control design and tuning. The expert system based control design is experimentally verified on an indirect vector controlled induction motor drive system with synchronous current control, using a 5 hp IGBT inverter, with the control implemented by a Texas Instruments DSP 320C25. The same principles can be extended to larger and more complex AC motor drive system applications.

There is a growing trend in the use of the knowledge-based techniques in business and marketing decision making. Nevertheless a few investigations on the topic of marketing decision support in software industry have been reported. The goal of the present paper is to gain inside the development of a knowledge-based system for decision support in a competitive software business environment. Analysing the company's decision structure we derive a procedure for a competitive software audit and determine the use cases. A general architecture of a knowledge-based decision support system is proposed. Object modeling and problem solving methods are briefly discussed. The solution of two different decision making problems is illustrated by proper case studies.
