Describes how to use computer simulation as a useful tool for teaching power flow analysis at the undergraduate level. A PC-based computer program, which runs under the Windows environment, has been developed at Purdue University Calumet. It provides a user-friendly environment that allows the students to simulate and analyze events that occur on a transmission system. These events consist of changing the bus voltages at the generating stations, taking generating stations off-line and taking transmission lines out of service. After each event, the software calculates the voltage at each bus, and the real and reactive power flow through the system. The user can then analyze the change in these values because of the event. The software package is used as a supplement to an undergraduate course in electrical power systems. This has increased students' ability to understand the way a power system responds to various loads and generation schedules. Examples of simulations are included.

The subject of this paper is a Petri net tool for simulation and control. This tool is used in conjunction with a Petri net editor called NETMAN to create a well integrated toolset for design, simulation, and control. This paper discusses a type of colored Petri nets that are used for the model description and the simulation tool. The details of the code generation are discussed, along with some possible uses of the generated code for both simulation and control. A published example of a stochastic Petri net is presented, and the results from the simulation are compared to the numerical solution.

In this paper a new subjective clustering method using fuzzy inference is proposed. Changing some parameters interactively, a user can reflect his/her knowledge or intuition for the clustering. The proposed method takes into account of both: (1) connectivity of data, and (2) linearity of the data distribution. In addition, it represents shapes of clusters by membership functions and uses fuzzy reasoning to reflect the subjectivity of a user effectively. The proposed method is also effective not only for clustering but also for other applications such as data analysis, assumption test, modeling, concept formation support systems, etc. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by computer simulation.

Petri nets are being used in modeling and control of discrete event systems due to their capability to capture the characteristics inherent to those systems. For complex systems the Petri net model is too large to analyze. Synthesis techniques are developed to overcome this difficulty. In this paper we review the existing synthesis methods and discuss some classes of problems which are not totally addressed.

To meet user requirements of higher dimensional accuracy of bar and wire rod products, the development of sophisticated dimension control technology for continuous rolling has been desired. As a result of basic research, a multivariable control system of interstand tension and exit height of the material at each stand using roll speed and gap as input vector has been developed based on the continuous rolling model and the optimal regulator theory. The validity of the multivariable control technique was verified by computer simulation and model mill experimentation. This paper describes: (1) modeling; (2) control system design; (3) computed results; (4) experimental results; and (5) a precision bar rolling system which was practically implemented at the bar mill of Muroran Works, Nippon steel, Japan, in 1990.

This paper introduces an improved method for optimizing parameters of an neural network based fuzzy diagnosis module. With the specific structure of a conventional fuzzy system the diagnosis module is used for the linguistic qualification of continuous signals to detect faulty components in technical processes. The design process of the module structure itself is based on numerical methods applied for neural networks. Training data indicating various systemstates delivered by a distributed continuous simulator are used to set up the initial module network structure. The proposed multistep parameter learning method enables fast adaptation of the diagnosis module parameters by avoiding mutual influences of parameters during the learning phase and consideration of individual parameter learning characteristics.

An architecture and methodology for executing a train control application in an ultra-safe manner is presented in this paper. Prior work in advanced train control systems are summarized along with their assumptions and drawbacks. A flexible architecture that allows fault-tolerant and fail-safe operation is presented for a distributed control system. A safety assurance technique which detects errors in software and hardware for simplex systems is presented in this paper. Performance results important to real-time control are obtained from modeling and simulating the architecture. An experimental prototype implementing the architecture and safety assurance technique is described together with experimental results.

As a modelling method in soft sciences, Forrester's system dynamics (FSD) has been both very successful and hugely criticised. The author argues that one of the reasons for the criticisms is that FSD does not capture all the structural aspects of soft systems. The author's claim is that it should now be generalised to a study of all processes isomorphic to abstract chemical kinetics. The author therefore defines a new formalism, the "reaction graphs" allowing that extension. Reaction graphs are both generalisations of FSD and watered-down pseudo bond graphs. By putting all these methods in a unified perspective, the author obtains a complete set of tools to build network lumped models of complex soft systems.

A structured development approach to deriving system models that helps to better understand and represent system details is presented. Real-world systems are never completely designed by either top-down or bottom up approaches. Therefore, methods that allow the integration of these two approaches as well as provide a means for analyzing such models are very useful. First, a general purpose system architecture, a corresponding system specification language, and a broad classification of the various concurrent system activities are presented. Second, Petri net (PN) extensions to simplify system specification and modeling are provided. Third, a transformation between the high level specifications to the proposed PN extensions is provided. Finally, a PN system model using the new PN extensions is derived as an example. To facilitate the use of existing PN based analysis and simulation tools a transformation between the PN extensions used in this paper to classical PNs is also illustrated.

Summary form only given. Although there are many stimulating and practical applications for system dynamics and automatic control, students often find the material too abstract, too mathematical, and difficult to master when it is presented in lecture. This paper presents a unique approach of multimedia assisted curriculum integration, which integrates three different courses through the effective use of laboratory practice and interactive multimedia techniques. Dynamic systems and control education in a typical mechanical engineering program consists of two basic courses: system dynamics deals with basic materials for modeling and analyzing dynamic systems of an interdisciplinary nature; and automatic control presents techniques for analysis and design of control systems. The multimedia software will go far beyond the material in traditional textbooks by illustrating key concepts in dynamic systems and control through video display, animation and active exploration.
