The aim of this presentation is to publish the results achieved by the use of a mathematical modeling technique invented and applied to the development of different mechatronic units such as drives and actuators. In the first part of the presentation, a detailed description of a modular technical system built up of electric and electronic components and end-effecters is given. Each of these components was developed separately at different industrial companies. The particular mechatronic unit under consideration was constructed using the appropriate mathematical model of these units. A unified model describing the whole system was developed with the integration of the models valid to the particular components. To test the models, a program approximating typical realistic situations in terms of workloads and the physical state of the system during operation was developed and applied. The main innovation consists in integrating the conclusions of professional experiences which the developers gained during their former R&D activity in different professional environments. The control system is constructed on the basis of classical methods; therefore the results of the model investigations can immediately be utilized by the developer of the whole complex system, which, for instance, may be an industrial robot.

The present paper provides Petri net (PN) modeling and performance analysis of a surface mount device (SMD) assembly station for automated manufacturing of printed circuit boards. Concentrating on the operational aspects, the authors construct PN models for an automated assembly station. These models enable designers to have a better understanding of the system control and analysis from the graphical representations of PNs. Further, the selection of the particular buffer size and its effects on the production rate of the transferline are explored. The analysis mainly uses the PN model to analyze two different transferlines and to examine when local gains propagate to the end of the transferline. Furthermore, artificial neural networks (ANN) are also proposed as a fast function approximation tool for a rapid reanalysis of the system. ANN can predict the output of the transferline for unknown input patterns when the input and output relation is monotonically increasing or decreasing. This capability of the ANN proves to be useful to analyze the transferline when there is no further information available. The approaches as presented in this paper can be generalized and applied to many other applications of multi-robot assembly systems.

Reports on the use of a second order nonlinear system with active force input to model the leg drop pendulum test in spastic cerebral palsy. The model is used as a means of gaining insight into a therapeutic intervention with this population. optimization techniques are used to adjust model parameters, such that model data fit actual data. Actual data is taken from a set of triplets, two of which have varying degrees of spastic: cerebral palsy and one is without disability. The author compares five sets of data, one from the normal triplet and two each from the subjects with spasticity. Data from the subjects with spasticity is taken before and after vertical stimulation similar to that which one would receive while on horseback. The model parameters show several trends. First, the amplitude of the active forces are reduced to more normal values after vestibular stimulation. Second, the duration of these forces is longer after stimulation than before.

In this paper, the authors present a method for determining the optimum path within a network of two-way streets or roads. This approach builds on the principle of dynamic programming, but is distinct from it in that it is iterative and more straightforward in its formulation. In the process of determining the optimal solution, at the first iteration any node whose previous remaining cost is unknown is assigned an artificial, very large value. As the iterations proceed, these artificial values are replaced by their correct values once they are computed. The iterations stop when there is no further improvement. This will depend on the number of "backward" links in the optimal solution which of course is unknown a priori; however, it can never exceed N-3 where N is the total number of nodes. The user is required only to specify the origin node and destination node as well as the cost (both ways) between all pairs of nodes which have connecting links. Ordering of the intermediate nodes is arbitrary; however, the use of good judgment in choosing this ordering can reduce the number of iterations required. Bounds are presented on the total number of calculations required and examples are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods.

The purpose of this research was to determine how the principles of ecological interface design (EID) could be applied to systems that are larger in scale than those that had been previously used as testbeds for evaluating EID. The focus of this initial feasibility study was the feedwater subsystem of Asea Brown Boveri's (ABB's) conventional power plant simulator. The primary outcome of this research is a prototype interface for the feedwater subsystem that is based on the EID framework. The main findings of this study are: a) a proof of concept showing that the principles of EID can be meaningfully applied to a larger-scale design problem representative of those found in industry; b) EID needs to be supplemented by more specific interface design principles; and c) it is possible to effectively integrate EID with these other design principles. Therefore, EID seems to be a viable candidate for the design of advanced computer interfaces for complex industrial plants.

A key problem in robotics is the estimation of the location and orientation of objects from surface measurement data. This is termed pose estimation. The authors' pose estimation problem is converted to a nonlinear optimization problem that minimizes an error objective function between the measured surface data and one of a CAD model. The authors study gradient flows on the Lie groups toward a solution of the pose estimation problem of quadratic surfaces. In this paper, the projected gradient flow of the objective function onto the manifold SO(3)/spl times/R/sup 3/ is derived and converge to an equilibrium point as is usual in steepest descent methods. Discretizations of flow lead to recursive numerical methods for pose estimation.

Most of the genetic algorithms researchers believe that crossover is the most effective operator for most optimum problems. However, the close blood relation reproduction makes chromosomes of populations similar, then crossover between these populations becomes ineffective. The authors propose five types of mutation operators for optimum problems. Moreover, the eugenic concept is added under the assumption that the individual with higher fitness value has higher probability in breeding new better individual. They also propose a parallel processing GA and calculate the accumulate fitness value of each operator in order to select suitable operators for typical problems. The simulation results show that the a sexual reproduction with eugenic concept does search work more effective than the traditional GAs.

Reports the result of a set of computer experiments carried out to enhance a digital image. The authors use a special line-weight function, which is a combination of zero- and second-order Hermite functions. The authors are motivated by the physiological evidence reported in Young (1987) that visual receptive fields in the primate eye are shaped like the sum of a Gaussian function and its Laplacian. This function can also be derived mathematically when the contrast sensitivity experiments in psychophysics are posed as an eigenvalue problem. The authors show that higher order Hermite terms play a significant role in image enhancement. The experimental results with one- and two-dimensional data show that the proposed function has extremely good localisation capability (i.e., the points marked by the operator is as close as possible to the center of the true edge).

Establishing a useful presence in the ocean is becoming increasingly important to science, industry, and the military, yet the undersea environment is hostile to human presence. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) offer a solution. Before widespread use of AUVs is practical, however, mechanisms for intelligent control must be developed. In this paper, we report on the Orca project, which has the aim of creating a robust, intelligent, mission-level controller for long-range ocean science AUVs. Orca is now being built and tested in simulation; in the future, it will undergo in-water tests aboard the Marine systems Engineering Laboratory's EAVE-III vehicles. In this paper, we discuss the motivation behind the project, the Orca program, and our current status and future work.

A new method of expert systems (ES) based on Petri nets, called RAM, is presented. This is the first such system which can memorize the truth value of the proposition processed. Using RAM: 1) the representation of knowledge processing system using conventional Petri net can be developed; 2) both forward- and backward-chaining can be modeled; 3) the truth value of the same proposition is uniquely stored and hence only single copy of propositions is needed; 4) object oriented concept is used; 5) sufficient and correct representations of both Horn- and non-Horn-clauses with negations appearing in both the head and body of any production rule can be achieved; 6) theorem proving by refutation can be performed; 7) property verification for correctness, consistency, and completeness with polynomial complexity can be achieved; 8) activation token is not needed; 9) neither Petri-like net nor colored Petri net is necessary for the ES; 10) the condition under which the representation of ES can be simplified to a simpler ordinary Petri net is studied; and 11) dynamic simulation of the execution of ES can be conducted.
