Space division multiplexing (SDM) is a promising solution with the scaling potential to overcome the possible capacity crunch problem in optical backbone networks. The key idea behind SDM is to exploit the spatial dimension to provide a significant increase in the transmission system capacity. In SDM, optical signals are transmitted in parallel through spatial resources (fibers, cores or modes), thus co-propagating in the same optical fiber structure. The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we propose and evaluate several versions of a greedy algorithm for optimization of flexible-grid SDM optical networks, including comparison with optimization results yielded by the CPLEX solver. Second, using best found algorithm settings, we complement our study with an analysis of SDM network performance in terms of the spectrum usage. We report and discuss results of numerical experiments run on a representative network topology with realistic physical assumptions. The key observation is the low scalability of the CPLEX solver, while the greedy algorithm is capable of generating solutions for larger network scenarios. However, even the relatively simple heuristic experiences quite large execution times.

We present two models for engineering processes, where thermal effects and time-dependent domains play an important role. Typically, the parabolic heat equation is coupled with other equations. Challenges for the optimization of such systems are presented. The first model describes a milling process, where material is removed and heat is produced by the cutting, leading to thermomechanical distortion. Goal is the minimization of these distortions. The second model describes the melting and solidification of metal, where the geometry is a result of free-surface flow of the liquid and the microstructure of the re-solidified material is important for the quality of the produced preform. © ifip International Federation for Information Processing 2016.

Dynamic precision scaling is a promising technique to reduce power consumption in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) systems. Power savings are achieved by dynamically adapting word lengths to a time-varying environment. Typical applications are wireless communication systems that operate under different wireless channel conditions. One of the obstacles of such techniques is that they require an optimization of word lengths for all intermediate values at all possible operation points. This makes traditional simulation-based fixed-point optimization infeasible. In this paper, we study efficient heuristics to find optimal sets of word lengths for all variables in a system under a range of operating conditions. We exploit statistical analysis of quantization noise coupled with Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) models of the channel environment. Applied to an example of a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) block in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, a more than 5,000x improvement in optimization time compared to an efficient simulation-based word length optimization method can be achieved. © 2013 IEEE.

Reducing test cost by minimizing the overall test time remains one of the main goals of system-on-Chip (SoC) testing. Power-Aware strategies optimize the overall test time of a SoC for a global peak power budget. Test time and test power can be regulated by VDD and test clock frequency to optimize SoC test schedules for a given power budget. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) techniques have been used in the past to optimize energy efficiency in SoCs. In this paper, we extend the concept of DVFS to optimize the test scheduling of SoC. We adopt a sessionless test scheduling strategy and provide a simple heuristic approach for its optimization. The proposed idea is implemented on several Itc02 benchmarks. Results show significant test time reduction over sessionless reference test schedules for which VDD and clock frequency are fixed at nominal values. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper it is shown that recent progress in stochastic modeling and optimization in combination with advanced computer systems has now made it possible to improve the design and the maintenance strategies for infrastructure systems. The paper concentrates on highway networks and single large bridges. United states has perhaps the largest highway networks in the world with more than 6 million kilometers of roadway and more than 0.5 million highway bridges;see [2]. About 40% of these bridges axe considered deficient and more than $50 billion is estimated needed to correct the deficiencies;see [12]. The percentage of substandard bridges deemed to require urgent actions in other countries such as France (15%) and UK (20%) is also high;see [3].

We introduce some methods for constrained nonlinear programming that are widely used in practice and that are known under the names SQP for sequential quadratic programming and SCP for sequential convex programming. In both cases, convex subproblems are formulated, in the first case a quadratic programming problem, in the second case a separable nonlinear program in inverse variables. The methods are outlined in a uniform way and the results of some comparative performance tests are listed. We especially show the suitability of sequential convex programming methods to solve some classes of very large scale nonlinear programs, where implicitly defined systems of equations seem to support the usage of inverse approximations. The areas of interest are structural mechanical optimization, i.e., topology optimization, and optimal control of partial differential equations after a full discretization. In addition, a few industrial applications and case studies are shown to illustrate practical situations under which the codes implemented by the authors are in use.
