Sustainability of buildings depends on their usage as much as on their static, physical properties. One can improve on the latter by the effective employment of information technology. Sensing technology can provide real-time accurate context information, in turn enabling intelligent building management. In this view, people's needs, preferences, habits, and commands become central. The present work aims at defining the scope of and trends in the area of Energy intelligent Buildings by stating ten relevant and timely questions, together with a brief discussion on each one of them. The questions are based on the experience on Energy intelligent Buildings gained by the distributed Systems group of the University of Groningen over a decade of funded research and development projects on the topic.

With the surge in global data consumption with proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), remote monitoring and control is increasingly becoming popular with a wide range of applications from emergency response in remote regions to monitoring of environmental parameters. Mesh networks are being employed to alleviate a number of issues associated with single-hop communication such as low area coverage, reliability, range and high energy consumption. Low-power Wireless Personal Area Networks (LoWPANs) are being used to help realize and permeate the applicability of IoT. In this paper, we present the design and test of IEEE 802.15.4-compliant smart IoT nodes with multi-hop routing. We first discuss the features of the software stack and design choices in hardware that resulted in high RF output power and then present field test results of different baseline network topologies in both rural and urban settings to demonstrate the deployability and scalability of our solution.

Future telecommunications networks, going beyond 5G, introduce numerous opportunities for new applications. Increased flexibility implies that new tools and techniques will be needed to take the most out of the networks, as otherwise we will simply create replicas of today's networks, which potentially include the same bottlenecks. In this keynote, we discuss network topologies, application architectures, and adaptability options that eventually will help in building superior user experience in future telecommunication networks and their applications. This will pave the way towards the Internet of people where technology is simply an enabler for satisfying end-user needs, and technological underpinnings are selected such that they best serve these needs.

Contemporary lifestyle changes, improvement in quality of life and new user needs cause that the meaning of a home bathroom, among other housing spaces, is increasingly being emphasized not only as hygienic-sanitary place but also a space for leisure and healthcare function. The new idea of the bathroom is shaped within the context of a changing population profile, which is impacting on the number of people requiring health care. The demands on health-friendly aspects in the bathroom environment are increasing along with health awareness and increasing interest for wellbeing. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a bathroom of various purposes and different characteristics. The integration of smart home technology to support health of users turns out to be necessary to achieve this goal. The purpose of this study is to present the bathroom as a place for healthcare by applying intelligent technology systems, including Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, in a bathroom space. For this reason, it is necessary to define the concept of intelligent bathroom and to demonstrate its potential for smart technology. An important issue in the study is the recognition of the current needs of users in terms of health and well-being manifested in the interest in using IoT technology in the bathroom space.

In this paper, we present necessary premises for the deployment of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) integrating Big Data analytics of road network traffic measurements of the city of Mohammedia, Morocco. Thus, we introduce an architecture based on three main layers such as IoV, Fog computing and Cloud computing Layer. We specifically put more focus on Fog computing layer in which we develop a framework for a real-time collecting and processing events generated by intelligent vehicles as well as visualizing traffic state on each road section. Furthermore, we consider deployment and test of the proposed framework using events retrieved from a Vanets-type micro simulation. Finally, we present and discuss the first obtained results as well as the advantages and limitations of the proposed architecture. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

In the second decade of the 21st century, we see the proliferation of cloud computing, Internet of Things/People, and big data/analytics, and the rejuvenation of Artificial Intelligence, robotics, virtual realities and augmented realities, etc., which have triggered the trends of building smart nations, smart cities, smart offices and smart homes all over the world. Such a trend has also shown its influence in the learning technology field where scholars and developers have begun to adapt and synthesize such state-of-the-art technologies to construct smart learning environments and tools. Notwithstanding, it is the time for us to take a step back and reflect upon-in the era where even intelligent robots could sit in high-stakes examinations and "perform better" than most of the human students, what kind of smart students and smart citizens do we really need and want to foster? What kinds of smart learning environments do that we need to develop to achieve the stated aim? What are the underpinning educational principles that the designers of such environments should adopt? This panel aims to bring together scholars who have worked in specific learning technologies or technology-aided pedagogies to co-identify the human-oriented (rather than technology-driven) objectives of the "smart learning" wave, and to possibly relook or even re-define the notion of "smart learning".

This paper deals with automatic generation control (AGC) and Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) in a two-area interconnected deregulated power system with and without direct current (DC) link. Now a day, increase in generation from renewable energy sources (RES) in an integrated power system is keep on increasing significantly. This present work describes a system dynamic model, with thermal generating sources and RES (Solar and wind Power model) for studying the AGC and AVR of system. The secondary controller in the AGC loop is optimally designed and compared by considering the Proportional integral (PI), Proportional integral derivative (PID) and Fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The results show that the FLC with DC link gives the better results as compared with other two controllers. The simulation result reveals that FLC gives better performance with respect to number of overshoots, settling time, peak deviations, and oscillations in both constant and variable distributed participation matrix. All the control strategies are implemented and the simulation results are showed using MATLAB/Simulink.

Even today fifty percent of India's working force is employed in agriculture and agro related industries. Which contributes 17 to 18% of India's GDP as of 2018. With that context, many farmers face problems in getting good agriculture yield and price for the products they produce and there are no proper guidance with respect to upcoming techniques and technology platforms where they can easily discuss and clarify their issues regarding the agriculture related topics. Hence, here is a new strategy to find solutions for all such issues and provide a platform to better knowledge sharing and enhancing the opportunities. A Web app for updating about the crop growth and monitoring in real time so as to keep the yield in better possible way. Also, an online discussion forum that would help farmers at a different location to remotely communicate and get the suggestion instantly. Unlike the normal web app, this web app model is hosted in the Customized cloud server (servers) which act as a reliable and efficient environment. The Innovative cloud servers are not only reliable with service but also provides many advantages like scalability, availability and cost-effectiveness. The server will be very robust in running the process in multiple operating systems without any delay or lag for the farmers. In this paper we propose a framework for increasing the agriculture yield using distributed computing with low cost approach.

With the increasing number of maritime trade activities, carrying out rapid and effective maritime search and rescue operation has become an urgent need for research in order to ensure the safety of navigation at sea. Now, we mainly rely on artificial decision making, artificial distribution of search and rescue area, and artificial driving ship to complete search and rescue operation. The distribution, synergy, parallelism, robustness and intelligence of unmanned boat and UAV provide a new idea for the development of search and rescue work at sea. The marine search and rescue system under the new situation can be regarded as a hierarchical control network system composed of multi agents. And in this paper, a new fast search and rescue system is proposed by using the improved ant colony algorithm and the independent calculation decision of the agents. The system adopts the edge computing, relies on the information sharing and the cooperative decision between the search and rescue agent groups. And finally it achieves the independent synchronous search and rescue. distributed task allocation solutions break through the limitations of centralized hierarchical task allocation based on manpower. Edge computing requires all distributed control nodes to make autonomous decisions in the task process. Based on the distributed cluster control of unmanned boat and UAVs, this paper combines edge computing, cooperative communication, centralized task allocation and decision making together. © 2018 IEEE.
