The article presents a prototype of a distributed system for wheelchair users assessment characterized by multi-sensing, embedded processing compatible IEEE 1451.4 standard for smart sensors and wireless communication based on IEEE 802.15.4. A set of smart sensing channels are connected in a 1-Wire network supported by an embedded platform that assures the acquisition and appropriate digital processing of photoplethysmogram (PPG), ballistocardigram (BCG) and skin conductivity signals. The wheelchair user identification is performed using LF RFID technology and the information is uploaded in a Electronic Health Record framework. The designed and implemented distributed measurement system was tested and experimental results are included in the paper.

In distributed query processing systems where caching infrastructure is distributed and scales with the number of servers, it is becoming more important to orchestrate and leverage a large number of cached objects in distributed caching systems seamlessly as the present trend is to build large scalable distributed systems by connecting small heterogeneous machines. With a large scale distributed caching system, a scheduling policy must consider both cache hit ratio and system load balance to optimize multiple queries. A scheduling policy that considers system load but not cache hit ratio often fails to reuse cached data by not assigning a query to the sever that has data objects the query needs. On the contrary, a scheduling policy that considers cache hit ratio but not system load balance may suffer from system load imbalance. To maximize the overall system throughput and to reduce query response time, a multiple query scheduling policy must balance system load and also leverage cached objects. In this paper, we present a distributed query processing framework that exhibits high cache hit ratio while achieving good system load balance. In order to seamlessly manage our distributed scalable caching system, our framework performs autonomic cached data migrations to improve cache hit ratio. Our experiments show that our proposed query scheduling policy and data migration policy significantly improve system throughput by achieving high cache hit ratio while avoiding system load imbalance.

Transition inversion coding (TIC) can reduce serial bus power dissipation by negating the even-numbered bits of a data word if the number of transitions in the data word is larger than half its word length. The codewords generated by TIC also enable up to a certain error detection rate. This paper proposes a method called PTIC that uses a parity bit along with TIC to achieve 100% single-bit error detection rate. Our implementation of PTIC achieves 7.4% power saving per bit transmission for an I/O driving a load of 30pF. We also work out the formulas for computing the transition activity of uniformly and randomly distributed data encoded by TIC and PTIC.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is one of the most promising technologies in the 21st century. Applying WSN to life or production environment is becoming increasingly common. Incorporating the environment-sensing capability of wireless sensor networks into mobile monitoring systems can provide convenient control of the greenhouses anywhere, anytime. This paper designs and implements a real-time mobile intelligent monitoring system, which can collect data real time, transfer data automatically and provide remote control via mobile device. The system consists of acquisition and transmission system, control center and mobile control terminal. It comprises temperature, humidity, light sensors, sink node, server and mobile client. We deployed this system in the actual environment and demonstrate the effectiveness of the system.

With the rapid development of Internet of Things and Big Data analysis, the computing mode of the 21st century is undergoing profound reform. But these technologies bring great challenges such as more multiple-dimensional and more numerous information with wide-area and heterogeneous sensor networks to classical context-aware frameworks at the same time. The IOV (Internet of Vehicles) applications is one kind of the typical IOT (Internet of Things) applications and the data involved in them are more and more big which need more complex querying or analyzing methods. Therefore, we have researched the big data problems in IOV applications and put forward the clouding based big data space-time analytics methods for contexts storing and contexts querying to improve the analysis efficiency of the systems. By these methods, we can improve the capability of the complex IOV applications for dealing the numerous contexts.

The NOνA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino experiment designed to make measurements to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, neutrino mixing parameters and CP violation in the neutrino sector. In order to make these measurements the NOνA collaboration has designed a highly distributed, synchronized, continuous digitization and readout system that is able to acquire and correlate data from the Fermilab accelerator complex (NuMI), the NOνA near detector at the Fermilab site and the NOνA far detector which is located 810 km away at Ash River, MN. This system has unique properties that let it fully exploit the physics capabilities of the NOνA detector. The design of the NOνA DAQ system and its capabilities are discussed in this paper. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The domain of Healthcare is characterized by difficulty, dynamism and variety. In the 21 st century healthcare represents different challenges (the increasing cost of care and the growing of populations). For that, Agent technology can provide better healthcare than the traditional medical system. In the hospital, several types of medical problems can be solved by agents. As examples of problems, which emerge in the hospital, we mention: collaboration between hospital wards, elaborations of diagnostics, the collection of information about patients etc. The adaptation of cooperative Multi Agent System (MAS) can solve these problems. In this regard, this study proposes a general architecture that integrates Swarm Intelligence into Multi Agent healthcare System in order to make care as efficient as possible.

With the advent of the 21st century the inclusion of electronic systems in almost all the aspects of life is very common. technology advancements have provided intelligent systems with advanced functionalities that could ease any given process. The 21st century has been evident of the ground breaking research carried out in vehicular technologies. Various electronic driver assist systems have been employed for ensuring ease and safety of the users. Modern day cars represent a symbiosis of several electronic subsystems that collaboratively give a safe and sound driving experience. The complexity of the functions implemented in these systems necessitates an exchange of data between them. With conventional systems, data is exchanged by means of dedicated signal lines, but this is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive as control functions become ever more complex. Controller Area Network is a high performance and high reliable advanced serial communication protocol which effectively supports distributed real time control. The concept plans to make a prototype displaying communication pattern between various electronic modules of a car.

This study combines ambient intelligence with wireless grids to investigate social interactions in emerging and next generation technology-pervasive environments. The use experience of postsecondary students and faculty with WeJay social radio is explored in a virtual distributed environment. The research literature on 21st century social sciences, wireless grids, ambient intelligence, and futures studies provides a theoretical framework for the exploration of social interactions with emerging technologies. The research design incorporates a case study approach, employing multiple methods of inquiry and analysis. Focusing on information-based social interactions in technology-pervasive environments, this study proposes an interaction dynamic, a conceptual model, and a research agenda for a 21st century ambient learning and information society.

Accurate fetal biometric ultrasound measurements are important for high quality obstetrics health care, used to determine the gestational age and the growth rate of the fetus, and hence served as important diagnostic tools. In modern ultrasound scanners, fetal measurements are made by manually extracting diameters or contours from ultrasound images. However, manual measurements are usually inaccurate and inconsistent. An automatic technique for acquiring biometric fetal measurements and robust to the pose and appearance variations exhibited in fetal ultrasound scans is highly desirable. In this paper, we focus on the femur measurement, and introduce a new automatic method for femur segmentation from ultrasound images and an automatic method for quickly computing the length of the segmented femur. In evaluation, the presented work is evaluated using the clinical dataset of the `Challenge US: Biometric Measurements from Fetal Ultrasound Images as part of ISBI 2012'. The challenge data consisted of 90 fetal ultrasound images acquired at 21, 28 and 33 weeks of gestation. Experimental results show that the presented approach is effective for the purpose of fetal biometric measurements of the femur and achieved 1st place on the automatic femur segmentation sub-challenge in ISBI 2012.
