This paper describes a delegation based high throughput MPIcommunication mechanism under tough memory utilization constrains on a many-core oriented hybrid parallel computer. Towards the Exascale era, hybrid parallel computers consisting of many-core and multi-core architectures both on the same node are focused. Although many-core architectures such as GPU or Intel MIC has high potential in computing power by the large number of computing cores, per-core computing power is lower than that of multi-core CPUs. Furthermore, available memory resources for the many-core CPUs are quite smaller than those for multi-core CPUs. Thus we may have a sort of penalty in memory utilization in MPI communications when we utilize a normal MPI library. Here we deploy a delegatee process on each node to merge MPI communications and minimize memory utilization for an MPI communicator. Another advantage of the delegatee process scheme is minimization of memory utilization on many-core CPUs by delegating MPI requests to associated delegatee process on multi-core CPUs. In this paper, we show performance advantages and effective resource utilization by our proposed scheme compared with the original MPI implementation.

Cloud computing became mainstream in the field of information technology. Cloud computing represents a distributed computing paradigm that focuses on providing a wide range of users with distributed access to scalable, virtualized hardware and/or software infrastructure over the Internet. The presented paper proposes a new file system as SaaS service of a cloud. The paper presents architecture and implementation details and comparison with the present data store methods.

This paper presents prediction-based dynamic resource allocation algorithms to scale video transcoding service on a given Infrastructure as a Service cloud. The proposed algorithms provide mechanisms for allocation and deallocation of virtual machines (VMs) to a cluster of video transcoding servers in a horizontal fashion. We use a two-step load prediction method, which allows proactive resource allocation with high prediction accuracy under real-time constraints. For cost-efficiency, our work supports transcoding of multiple on-demand video streams concurrently on a single VM, resulting in a reduced number of required VMs. We use video segmentation at group of pictures level, which splits video streams into smaller segments that can be transcoded independently of one another. The approach is demonstrated in a discrete-event simulation and an experimental evaluation involving two different load patterns.

High reliability is always pursued by network designers. Multipath routing can provide multiple paths for transmission and failover, and is considered to be effective in the improvement of the network reliability. However, existing multipath routing algorithms focus on how to find as many paths as possible, rather than their computation or communication overhead. We propose a dynamic distributed multipath algorithm (DMPA) to help a router in a link-state network find multiple nexthops for each destination. A router runs the algorithm locally and independently, where only one single shortest path tree (SPT) needs to be constructed, and no message other than the basic link states is disseminated. DMPA maintains the SPT and dynamically adjusts it in response to network state changes, so the sets of nexthops can be incrementally and efficiently updated. At the same time, DMPA guarantees loop-freeness of the induced forwarding path by a partial order of the routers underpinning it. We evaluate DMPA and compare it with some latest multipath algorithms, using a set of real, inferred and synthetic topologies. The results show that DMPA can provide good reliability and fast recovery for the network with very low overhead.

The paper considers the main issues and recommendations for using the risk assessment techniques based on the analysis of static, dynamic and historical security information. The system of security metrics and techniques for their calculation are suggested. Proposed techniques are based on attack graphs and service dependencies. They allow evaluating security of network topologies, malefactors and attack characteristics, and integral security properties and characteristics calculated on the basis of the cost-benefit and zero-day vulnerability analysis. The approach is intended to be implemented in the framework of the FP7 EU MASSIF project.

This paper discusses the design and evaluation of Kistree, a reliable, fault-tolerant and self-configuring constant degree distributed hash table (DHT) for peer-to-peer systems. The Kistree topology can be thought of as log(n) vertically stacked layers or levels. At each level, we divide the whole identifier space into segments to form an n-ary tree structure. The nodes and keys belong to a particular segment at a level in Kistree network depending on the node / key identifier. A node in Kistree contacts with a constant number of nodes at the next level to forward queries. A node also creates a link with a node at the topmost level to get a global view of the system. This way Kistree keeps a constant number of neighbors in the routing table and traverses a logarithmic number of nodes to route a query to its destination. An insert operation stores a key on a number of diverse nodes of a concerned segment. The lookup operation, on the other hand, retrieves a stored key efficiently and reliably. The prototype implementation of Kistree on PeerSim verifies its scalability, reliability and efficiency. The experimental results achieved with a network of 50,000 nodes confirm its self-configurability and ability to route messages even under a high rate of churn.

A major goal of this paper is to consider a new paradigm of monitoring and predictive maintenance decision support of distributed hybrid renewable energy power units, driven by data, economic and ecologic requirements. A renewable energy power unit is a multi-component multistate complex system. In this paper, colored stochastic Petri nets are suggested to model, evaluate and forecast the health conditions of components, and to drive and update the data collection process through the unit lifetime. The approach allows monitoring the health conditions of the unit and predicting the reliability of its components, on the base of a non-parametric model.

In the past decade during IEEE sponsored professional meetings 2 , 3 the theme of “Global Health Transformation through true Interoperability” was brought to the forefront in the inaugural keynotes. Some technologies that started with the monitoring of hemodynamic variables of astronauts by NASA in the 60s were further developed by the Department of Defense for the purposes of treating their injured in the battlefield via Telemedicine. By August 5 th , 1997 President Clinton signed the first piece of legislation that was allowing the concepts of homecare to be tried to measure cost and medical effectiveness. With the development of Internet, the World Wide Web (WWW), social media, intelligent agents, mobile technology, sensors, and pieces of clothing containing them a new generation of devices have been created offering new possibilities for improvements particularly in areas such assist of living (for those suffering from chronic conditions), and homecare in general. The use of wearable computing in general and the use of augmented reality in the developed world in particular offer some unique opportunities to improve outcomes. In the 21st Century and as the Health Care and Public Health infrastructure intersect deeper into the many Information technology (IT) subfields, abundant and formidable changes can occur that will allow society to shift current systems into some where wellness and disease prevention will be the focus. Many changes can affect positively medical and cost effective outcomes as well as the elimination of medical errors and patient safety for example. With the advent of the 21 st century the inclusion of electronic systems in almost all the aspects of life is very common. technology advancements have provided intelligent systems with advanced functionalities that could ease any given process. The 21 st century has been evident of the ground breaking research carried out in vehicular technologies. Various electronic driver assist systems have been employed for ensuring ease and safety of the users. Modern day cars represent a symbiosis of several electronic subsystems that collaboratively give a safe and sound driving experience. The complexity of the functions implemented in these systems necessitates an exchange of data between them. With conventional systems, data is exchanged by means of dedicated signal lines, but this is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive as control functions become ever more complex. Controller Area Network is a high performance and high reliable advanced serial communication protocol which effectively supports distributed real time control. The concept plans to make a prototype displaying communication pattern between various electronic modules of a car.

We restate the objective of the first workshop on Collaboration and Cloud computing" in WETICE 2009;"to analyze current trends in Cloud computing and identify long-term research themes and facilitate collaboration in future research in the field that will ultimately enable global advancements in the field that are not dictated or driven by the prototypical short term profit driven motives of a particular corporate entity." We are glad to report that the discussions started in 2009 have directly resulted in an alternative approach to self-managing distributed computing systems totally different from current industry trend showing a way to eliminate the complexity of virtual machines and Hypervisors. If this approach is proven to be theoretically sound (as a paper in this conference is investigating) and extend its usefulness (demonstrated through their feasibility in the form of two proofs of concepts in the last conference) to mission critical environments, the DIME network architecture may yet prove to be an important contribution to computer science. In addition to the two papers related to the DIME computing model, there are nine other long papers and two short papers selected out of twenty two submissions discussing various aspects of clouds, grids and their management.
